Cool video, but one thing that comes across my mind is how awful the bottom is, it's basically mud. No wonder why the barbel population has decreased over the years. I'm not sure what the Thames used to be like, but personally I like a gravel bottom river. Keep the videos coming.
Thanks Warbob, i know what you mean, there wasnt really a lot of flow i guess due to the lack of rain we have had recently. I have been told there have been barbel caught along that stretch though. I think the river needs a good flood through and it will clear a lot of the bottom up.
Yeah it definitely does need a good flood. If the bottom in the future tends to be like that due to lack of rain, then I can't see barbel being able to spawn like they used to. I fish the dorset stour and Hampshire avon, and even certain parts of that river is getting silty on the bottom. Great to see the perch though as the Thames was a few years ago one of the best rivers for huge perch. hopefully that continues.
Old comments I know but bare in mind that this would have been filmed fairly close in where the flow is slowest and the the wash from the boats would push the silt. Whilst I fully agree it's not a great sign for the river I would expect there to be less silt in the middle of the river.
commy venue or a typical skimmer lake if poss. Would like to see how winter affects shoal grouping (skimmers), etc. Great underwater work by the way!
