If you want to see a show that actually had GREAT LGBT rep, look at Loud House.
Sure, its fandom has a history of...strangeness that near equal to that of Owl House and maybe it might not be as popular. But still; when it comes to LGBTQ+ rep, the show never shies away from it

as a 19 year old lesbian (god i cant even say that word without it feeling bad or wrong, but anyways), it's so great to see a character like amity who i can relate to so much. even though the damage has already been dealt to me (homophobic parents, comphet, etc) and it's going to take me to take me a long time to get over my internalized homophobia, i still find so much comfort in amity's characterization and how she acts towards luz. thanks for this video! ♡

56:00 Actually they did show that lesson but in a different way. When Eda tells Luz about cheating Luz says that if you cheat you can't know if you are good or not. When Eda won not only was she happy because she won but also that she did it without cheating. It was a proof that she is still good even with the curse aging her faster. Which is something that eda shows she struggles with in episode 11 when she tries to get the flower of eternal youth just to proof that she isn't too old.

    • @filmfreak1994

Oh, neat. I like subtle lessons like that, not overt "Don't cheat cuz bad" morals. Actually seeing how good Eda feels not cheating for probably the first time in her Grudgby playing days is much more meaningful.

The fascism of the Emperor is actually a lot deeper and more accurate than most depictions of fascism, as most who write don't have a firm grasp of its political ideology. Key factors that separate fascism from every other totalitarian state is rife throughout Belos' Empire. The worship of the state and the idea that the everyman is a hero of it as evidenced by the existence, propagation, and the hype surrounding the Emperor's coven within the Isles' society, that "you too" can become a member of this prestigious faction of the government's greatest 'heroes'. The rejection of modern ideology, of the wild witches, and the old traditions while imposing new traditions in the form of the Coven System, all the while acting like the old ones were never traditions to begin with and that the new ones were always a part of their culture.
Whereas a(n oppressive) communist regime will completely reject the sense of tradition of its people, erasing their individuality save for a select few, a fascist regime will embrace and subsequently abuse the sense of tradition of its people, and use their want for individuality and aspirations for greatness to suit them to its needs. The Coven System itself is a shockingly effective method of accomplishing every ounce of this. By labelling it as the norm, it is seen as traditional, by segregating the different types of magic it hides behind a mask of individuality, and by putting a single Coven above all of the others it gives the people a chance to excel, but only in the name of the state, and does all of this while being an effective method to control the most dangerous thing to Belos' rule: Other Witches.
I absolutely love this show. It's not often that you find something so intricately crafted and laid out. This is just one of many examples where the harder you look at this show the more sense it makes, as opposed to unraveling at the seams like many works of fiction do.

    • @Aryc11
      @Aryc11 3 роки тому +42

@@turner15 I really like that because that's how it always is. To everyone living inside a fascist or otherwise totalitarian system it's, it's just the system they're living in. There isn't anything else. The Coven system is just a part of life to the witches of the Boiling Isles, and nearly everyone living there believes it to be a good thing, thanks to the Emperor's erasure of history and propaganda. This is the same psychological perspective through which the citizens and the soldiers of Nazi Germany, North Korea, the USSR, and many, many more totalitarian states saw or still see the world around them.
What I find especially compelling, though, as I said in my comment, is that the Owl House understands what makes Fascism uniquely horrifying. Fascism makes you _like_ it and think that it's good for you. It offers promises of things like community that you're already entitled to without the tax of your individuality, and pretends that it itself is a gateway towards individuality. Even Luz's friends, who are genuinely good people, believe that the Covens are a _good thing_ because that's what the Emperor wants them to think.

One my favorite parts of the owl house is that they treat luz and amity's relationship as NORMAL. They dont mention that they are bi or lesbian, because they don't care. "Look at the woosh and the circles and the bouncy and they didn't have to and OMG THIS EPISODE and CAN YOU LOOK AT THAT"
Now THIS is the kind of review I want to hear for an animated show. It's not even a joke, like you might not know the animation terms but I can feel the enthusiasm and appreciate it even more than I did the first time I watched it.
However, I gotta say I disagree that King and Eda didn't consider themselves family before Luz appeared. Eda does treat King like her kid, taking him to the park so he can play with other kids, giving him toys (so he can form his evil army), obviously feeding him, keeping him on her house and going so far as to indulge him on his little fantasy of having a crown that contains all his evil power just because it makes him happy. All of that screams mom behaviour independent of Luz's involvement. The thing that Luz did changed was that now they are more openly affectionate with each other, but there was already a strong bond between the two of them.

as a 19 year old lesbian this show is absolutely fantastic, no stigma around differing sexualities at all, its just treated like its the most normal thing in the boiling isles, which, well, it is, i dont like it when shows try to be inclusive and make a huge deal about two characters being queer and instead it ends up feeling like a cry for attention rather than just a normal thing. This show just casually shows that a character has two dads with no big announcement or flair, like how you should do it. Dont treat queer characters as something special, treat them how you would treat any other character, which this show does perfectly.

You know, with some of the themes you mentioned in this, the one that caught my attention the most is "These witches be gay"...
I'm kidding, it's the "found families" trope which reminded me of a brilliant anime I watched a while ago (multiple times, I might add) called "Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid" aka "Kobayashi san chi no Maid Dragon". It deals with the found family trope among other things, it's also a show about gay dragons... So yeah, I don't wanna spoil anything but people should seriously watch it. It has beautiful animation, very likable and relatable characters (mostly), well developed relationships, unexpectedly deep conversations about... things and just such a wholesome vibe.

Eh, it’s still true that cis gay men are most represented overall if you count other kinds of media; I didn’t find a single sff novel growing up that had positive portrayals of gay girls in relationships, though I read several with gay boys in them that I liked. And sapphic representation in cartoons is still really lacking compared to straight representation-half a dozen shows is objectively not a lot, lol! And all of those shows’ creators had to fight the networks to be allowed to portray what they wanted to portray. I would also LOVE to see more gay men in cartoons, without a doubt! But we’re still living in a homophobic society, and no one is privileged just for having a few more scraps, you feel? We’re in this together.

I believe in Japan they refer to the animation style that this show has as 'Sakuga' which is absolutely amazing and requires a hell of a lot of time and effort because each scene in that has a large number of gorgeously and intricately drawn frames which give that seamless flowing look. I hope the animators on this show got compensated appropriately because this show's animation is just outstanding. *Thinking of Eda v Lilith and the grom dance sequence*
Which kinda reminds me of the one thing I found lacking in She-ra. If only that show had animation like this, it would be perfect!
*A bit of a spoiler alert for the following ramblings*
Also, dwelling on just the representation thing (which a lot of videos are doing) in this show does a disservice to it in my opinion because it has a lot of other things going for it too. A menacing and mysterious villain, Eda (everything about her is just fantastic), Lilith and her questionable decisions, etc. I found the relationship dynamic between Eda and Luz especially intriguing. It feels really well portrayed and seems like the core of the show for me so far. That can change and I hope they do something similar with Lumity because Amity gushing over Luz is just all kinds of adorable.
I do feel like there are still negatives to this show because after the first couple of episodes, there didn't seem to be any direction the show was moving towards. It kinda got mediocre for me, not a waste of time but just kinda meandering while still being entertaining enough to watch. King got a bit unbearable at times as well.

M'kay. I'm afraid I'll have to be controversial here, by saying that Pacifica didn't need or -HECK- even deserve a character arc. I mean, even Alex Hirsch himself has said that he wanted Pacifica to stay a bully, just a tiny bit less of one after 'The North-West Manor' episode.
He said something along the lines of wanting an antagonist who ISN'T the villain. Sure, we all had that moment where we thought romance was afoot between Dipper & Pacifica, but Hirsch didn't like the cliché so he scrapped it, sorely disappointing many viewers, but still leaving content for gags and troubles (like Pacifica not wanting to put on Mabel's apocalypse sweater).
TL;DR: Pacifica was never *meant* to have a character arc, a fact validated by the creator of Gravity Falls himself.

    • @filmfreak1994

Fair enough, but I still think Pacifica is a lot more interesting when she's not just a bully.

If anyone's curious there's a podcast called something like Gravity Falls: Behind the Scences where Alex comes on with various writers and voice actors and gives commentary for each episode revealing basically everything about the making of them.

I love it when creators notice and take a moment to appreciate animation in any animated show/movie, whether it's a children's cartoon or not. When creators do this, they are not only seeing the animation for its worth, but also noticing the animators who work on these projects and thanking them for their hard work.

This show hits so close to home for so many reasons.
I have ADHD, Luz has ADHD. I’m Bi, Luz is Bi. I am pretty sure I have autism, Amity can easily be read as autistic. So many of my experiences have been reflected in this show, and it isn’t even done yet.
It also got me thinking that getting a girlfriend isn’t totally far fetched/that I’m capable and worthy of having a partner. Which is something that I kind of subconsciously gave up on.
This show makes me feel seen, heard, and loved in a way I can’t truly explain. I know it has flaws, but oh my god, I absolutely adore this show.

It's so long but even though it takes an hour I can't help but watch the whole thing because it's so good so is your narrative talking. I love the LGBTQ as well but even though I myself is part of it I'm more relate to Luz's struggle with family and society more. And also I'm a fangirl of Luz and Amity, it's so cute. Me and my bae always gay panic because of them being cute.

I just like the show because Luz goes in with OUR expectations of a perfect fantasy world like Harry Potter, and we un-learn those with her. Also i'm a sucker for Lumity AND found family and I just love the whole cast, but especially the main three. It's such a good show, and while having dark themes, it's still has this light-hearted vibe and is super comforting for me personally, AND the animation IS SO GOOD. I also like that it's slow-paced and takes time to develop conflicts and characters over time while creating some every-day life for it's characters. I just, can't wait for Season 2

Something that really made owl house special was the dark and demonic tone they put in this world, its not a "magical world of fantay", its a REALM OD BLOOD-SUCKING DEMONS and that cracks me up. Seeing all these nightmarish imagery being put under a more comedic and cartoonish light, almost as if they got the team behind Bayonetta or Darksiders to do the art direction on Gravity Falls's animation team (the school bell always cracks me up), and the characters recognize they are all demonic and creepy . almost like Addams Family with a ton of sass.
As for Bellus, he CAN be redeemed if he is a puppet of the titan, as if the aforementioned titan wants to get back to life and thats the unity, to, I don't know, sap the magic of all witches to bring the titan back to life, and Bellus is just a puppet either completely mind-controlled or just too scared to defy the titan because it either means his harm, or in a more noble effort, the harm of everyone else that would come if the titan is contradicted.

This is why I love this show so much. I HATE it when a show boils down their character, to the BLACK one, or the GAY one. there's way more to a person than that. I remember a few years ago that they where going to make a Hungarian hero over at Marvel. Honestly I want a little excited to see my people be more than the villain FOR THE FIRST TIME IN COMICS. Yes look it up for almost 100 years all Hungarians were villains in comics. However when I started looking through the book, I found out that she was just a stereotype of, " HAHA, LOOK AT ME I AM EASTERN EUROPEAN AND I CAN'T SPEAK ENGLISH GOOD, ISN'T THAT WEIRD?!" Well I promptly put the book down and walked out of that store. This is the problem I have with this focus on representation as of the past couple of years,, most of them have been awful and offensive. However when ever I call it out I get people REEEEing at me that I don't understand because I am a white straight guy. Like Assholes all of YOU have gotten a good rep years, or decades ago while I only got Marvel's Borat over here. There has still yet be a good Hungarian, they are either a crude stereotype, or villains.
EDIT: also your whole Fascism thing was very interesting, however I would totally argue that it's totally Marxism/Communism. They do the same thing. I Have been to china three times in my life, Seen the Killing Fields of Cambodia, and almost married someone for a Communist country. The way she looked at the world was very similar to what you described. They are just the other side of the same terrible coin.

I think the reason Amity and Luz's relationship works is because it's real. I'm a more conservative person but I'm also bisexual, and seeing lgbt representation in shows that is so clearly designed for the sake of virtue signaling and sending a political message frustrates me to no end. I have to put up with disingenuous political correctness AND I don't even get any good character development or genuine representation out of it. Amity and Luz's relationship is as frank and open as any heterosexual relationship in fiction and doesn't go the route of "two people in love against all the world's expectations, defying the evils of straight culture." Instead, it's just... sweet. It shows a real portrait of what a healthy relationship, regardless of the genders involved, can be like. And I really appreciate that.

As someone who is half Navajo, the whole "Savage Age" and Eda teaching Luz that the isles are alive and will provide help when you need it really struck a cord with me. Not in a bad way just something that felt familiar in a way? If you know U.S. history, I'm sure some will know how the government tried to wipe out Indigenous tribes. Claiming them as "savages" who *needed* to be forced out of their homes, be "introduced" to Christianity, and residential schools. Saying how they were uncivilized people so the best way to "help us" was to completely get rid of their culture, making it illegal to dance or sing traditional things, and so forth. I don't know the whole, "Savage age" and "Wild witches" really reminded me of things I was sorta told growing up? Being called savage by my elementary classmates and what not. Not too sure if that was the intention but it definitely felt familiar to me and that only makes me love The Owl House even more because I feel like that my feelings are valid in a way? Because I was often brushed off and some people will just say some bullshit that invalidates me and my entire existence you know?
