@@ThePinkRubber yes because a kid's physiology is that much different from an adult's that they're just incapable of drinking any alcohol, and a switch flips when you turn 18 or 21 or whatever and you're suddenly able to drink it without getting sick

My bio teacher introduced my class to this phenomenon. She was teaching about different enzymes and how a lot of Asians are deficient in alcohol dehydrogenase, and how she herself gets uncomfortable when she even drinks some beer or red wine. BTW, she was my favourite highschool teacher.
I'm sure she was a great teacher. However, on average, Asians are not at all deficient in alcohol dehydrogenase; in fact, they have more efficient ALCOHOL dehydrogenase (that is, they actually tend to convert ethanol to the next step, acetaldehyde, much faster). Asians are more likely to have less efficient ALDEHYDE dehydrogenase (which converts the toxic acetaldehyde to acetate). You can see it partially explained in the video above (except the part about the more efficient alcohol dehydrogenase). It is hypothesised that these mutations in the genes that encode these enzymes are adaptations to prevent alcoholism.
Not every Asian on planet earth will have this! It is called the Asian Flush because this gene appears more often in Asians but it can also occur in other populations.
Apparently it can happen to any race, but I don't have this. I also have naturally high alcohol tolerance, like my father but neither of us are much for drinking. I've read people with blue eyes have a naturally higher alcohol tolerance than average and we both have blue eyes. I'd choose Asian Flush over my dyslexia though. High alcohol tolerance is not a useful trait.

+Ry Alcohol alone also works as a vasodiolator on the rest of us too. This is one of the facts that makes the whole "Drink some brandy to stay warm" myth. You may also feel a bit odd in places on your body where you have high blood flow.
***** The fact that they have eye colors other than brown, and hair color other than black. There was a pic that actually investigated skull structure and so on, but i can't be arsed to find it.
+Holdin McGroin The hair colour and eye colour may be quite varied, as European peoples' tend to be due to their production of melanin alleles that favour lighter colours than African, Asian, American, and Oceanic peoples, but the variations in anime and manga also tend to be quite unnatural for humans in general and produce fantastic human characters who have features that don't represent Europeans at all.
+Holdin McGroin I think the reason they look white (or least not stereotypically Asian) is because they artists and animators want the characters to be easier to differentiate between, not that all Asians look alike, but I already have a bit of difficulty telling characters apart in some shows (especially if I haven't been watching from the beginning) so giving them all "super Asian faces" would just make that wide. Additionally a character's physical traits are often meant to reflect their personality, like masculine character having are hard jawline or a naive character having wide eyes. I'd also wager that differing art styles play a part in this too, as some artists may simply have a tendency to draw more "white" features on their characters or an art style that produces racially ambiguous characters that people just assume are white. But I could be wrong.
This very thing has been a topic of many jokes between my wife and I. My wife was born and raised in Germany, a culture with a long drinking history. I'm Korean-American and I turn red after a couple drinks though I'm not drunk. My wife calls me her "cherry dumpling" when it occurs lol.

I'm glad you mentioned about the headache after 30 mins of drinking. I get that too so drinking has never been that enjoyable for me. No one around me experiences the headaches so I assumed it was just me.
I grew up in the San Francisco Bay area, so I had some Asian friends back in my 20's and I always wondered why they were so hesitant to join our other friends in what was ill advised alcohol consumption. Now I know they may have not only been far wiser, but also possibly had an seeming allergy. Great friends but always soooo sober. Smart.
@@joshualin5476 @Dan K Didn't Jesus come up with that whole communion thing? I mean, he told his followers to drink wine and bread ritualistically to remember him. Jesus wants you to get into the sauce, get with the program! I went to the British school system with the CofE and lived in a village. Our vicar had his own nook in the pub where his congregation would go talk to him over a pint looking for advice. If he'd sat in the church all day, I doubt he'd have a congregation because he'd be unfamiliar to his parishioners.
InandaroundTO I don't know about other countries, but like I said, the more puritanical religous people in America have had a history of seeing alcohol consumptions as a sinful indulgence. Communion was a ritual based on the thing that Jesus did, but he didn't exactly tell people to do that. Communion was a ritual invented after his death based on the Last Supper
Yo I had a Chinese Roommate (Loved her, miss her) and she came home drunk one-day bright red! I assumed it was normal cause her boyfriend wasn't freaking out but this was so informative
Wow this was an eye opener. I deff need to cut back. I am an Asian who lacks that gene but I over time no longer get the flush anymore and can drink considerably more than I used to without any side effects. Esophageal cancer sounds terrifying and I think it’s time for a lifestyle change
I am half Chinese and have this condition. It is horrible as hell. My skin gets red from head to toes and itches like hell, my heartbeat goes sky high, I get nausea, headache and the worst of all my trachea shuts down completely leaving me impossibly to breath, chocking and gasping for air. It feels like my trachea swells uncontrollably. Reason enough to stay away from alcohol.
Sounds like you should not drink. Many people are allergic. The fact is, alcohol is a poison, and the high from it is part of the effect of this. As your Dr. at your next check up.
If you have this reaction to any kind of alcohol, you have the gene mutation that causes Asian flush. If it's just a certain kind of alcohol i.e. hops or made from corn, then it might an allergic reaction. I get all the same reactions as you except for the trachea swelling. That sounds dangerous. Yeah I would steer clear of alcohol. For me, the worst part is I get itchy red skin rashes that lasts for up to 10 days.
I used to party hard in my early 20’s despite the Asian glow. I just went outside a lot to cool myself off, and avoided cocktails (the sugar in them causes an excruciating stomachache). 10 years later and I’ve discovered the wonders of Pepcid. I swear it completely eradicates the glow if you take one prior to or while drinking.
Hey you're the one making a thing about her colour... Just saying. If I see a white or a black woman I think is hot I'll just say they're hot. No need to mention colour at all unless as a positive.
+WheresPoochie I knew of "alcohol flush" if that is what you want to call it, but this is the first time i hear about "Asian flush". By this, Serbs are actually Asian.
However, many east asians don't go red when drinking rice based alcohol, it's mainly when they drink wheat based, having to do with genetic mutations. Maybe westerners would turn red when they drink rice based alcohol, someone should try this out
I think it's different for everyone but I definitely feel this! I'm able to drink sake, rice wines, makgeolli etc much easier than say, tequila, beer, etc. I can have a glass of sake or bowl of makgeolli and not even feel the flush, but half a beer and I'm red. Grape wine is kind of in the middle. Cider is, too. And let's just say I learned about tequila the hard way. Unfortunately, that means I only need to take a few sips of a margarita to regret it immediately. I also realise very 'clean' alcohols like something containing mostly neutral spirits I'm able to drink with less reaction - so strangely, drinks like Southern Comfort (which is whiskey *flavoured*) are easier to drink for me. But also, the higher quality (cleaner), generally, the better. Cheap vodka and tequila are the worst, while expensive whiskey is alright.
Although I am not of Asian descent I experienced similar symptoms as mentioned in the clip and finally gave up drinking over a decade ago because the results of drinking alcohol were just so unpleasant. I have met a few other people who never drink alcohol, for the same reasons I gave up, and now wonder if the missing enzyme issue might also occur with other ethnic groups. Thank you for providing the medical explanation for the condition.
I'm European and I suffer from this quite badly. However, I found that indigestion medicine helps with this completely. So, if you have asian flush, ranitidine (active ingridient) can help. you will find this is most pharmacies. Take a tablet before drinking, and it helps digest it. Just don't abuse it as of course, mixing medicine and alcohol is not ideal. I do this on a very rare case.
ok this is late as hell and it'd probably be useless by now but at 2:30 the girl's fingernail has a black line running through it which can be normal but it can also be a sign of melanoma
The first (& last time) I drank warm Saki (Japanese rice wine) I literally turned so red that my friends rushed me to the nearest hospital. I was so freaked out by the whole ordeal that I haven't touched the stuff since and that was over 20 years ago.
It's true for me and all my family as an Asian. We felt burning inside and gradually become Asian flush which is really tired and exhausted after that. And as you said, overuse alcohol is bad but if you have an Asian flush, it's even worse and the truth is my grandpa had died cuz of being overuse alcohol when you need to have a party with your customer often. He drinks like a fish and ignores Asian flush and it's come to the point that he realized he had liver cancer. Goodbye, my beloved grandpa !
I’m someone that gets very bad Asian flush like straight tomatoes red 😂 I would say it feels like a curse and blessing at the same time. When I was younger I always felt like I was missing out and would try to drink, but soon as I drank 1 drink my body would already get symptoms and start shutting down. As I got older I accepted I could not drink alcohol and gave up trying. 25 years old now and I’m finally seeing how much of a blessing it is not to be able to drink. Don’t let society foul you to thinking you need alcohol to have fun.

+pineappleagent1 I didn't notice him turn red in the two alcohol-related Try Guys videos that I have seen. Ryan Bergera did a video on this though. No Eugene in it unfortunately. He called it Asian glow in the video.
I’m so white, but this happens to me! Just one drink and my cheeks are burning and my chest is red and splotchy. It took me a while to realize because when I was younger I mostly binge drank (regrettable) but now I feel so self conscious having one at happy hour :/
I'm the same way and am white. I always was ignorant to it and just dealt with the redness and feeling super hot while drinking up until recently when a friend said I should Google Alcohol flush syndrome. I soon find out that I'm pretty certain to have this alcohol intolerance and now have decided to completely give up drinking bc of the adverse health affects it said it can have long term when a person has this. I'm 33 and I hope all those years of heavy drinking didn't cause too much damage 😕

And when I have a drink, I also have Asian flush but definitely not as much as my Asian dad. Any other people here who are mixed raced European and Asian and have a similar experience?
I'm black and alcohol makes me uncomfortable. I get drunk too fast and I just want to sleep. It does not make me more social, it just makes me miserable.
Great video. I've asked this question a million times before and googled it a bunch yet somehow the answer never stuck in my mind. Finally after this video I will remember. Always know how to explain things well. Thanks all involved Completely off topic but I can't help but say, I've got a huge crush on Joss. I never ask people out or worry about relationships, but if I met her in real life I'd, without hesitation do it immediately. Thanks for listening, internet.
I never even knew this was a thing until a Vietnamese ex-gf pointed it out whenever we'd have a couple drinks. I grew up around a lot of Chinese, Cambodian, and Filipino folks, but it just wasn't something I had ever noticed before she told me about it. I still rarely notice it, because if I'm out having drinks or even just drinking with friends, I usually have better things to pay attention to than someone else's complexion.
Ah finally I mean it's not an actual diagnosis but it's a perfect explanation for why I get flushed even after one drink. It's also one of the reasons why I don't drink anymore. Thanks for putting this out.
I'm not Asian. My ancestory is Irish and English (maybe a little native American on my dad's side). I've had this flush thing for as long as I can remember. It started in middle school. I would laugh or get nervous, and my entire chest and neck area would get red and flushed. People would always ask me what was wrong. I always heard it called sexual flush. LOL So later on in life, I tried drinking alcohol. I get the same thing. The hot flushing, heart racing, and general terrible feeling. I just decided it wasn't worth the discomfort and don't drink. My husband is Czech and came out of the womb drinking. So, I make the perfect designated driver! When I do take a little sip of alcohol and complain, he says my Irish side is trying to kill my Native American side. :)
Native americans are notorious alcoholics they don't suffer from this asian flush and neither do other native mix latinos. Native Americans actually predate asians.
Just keep an eye on it. Rosacea causes warm flushes, too. That's something that a doctor can help with. If it's untreated, it can become very unsightly down the road.
the girl in the middle doesn't even look bad by having a red face it makes her look better. even the other people don't look bad in this pic after the "Asian flush".
+Tuber It looked like the colours on the before pics of all of the people were messed up (slightly desaturated or yellowed), you can the the differences not just in the faces but the clothing and hair.
+Tuber It looks unnatural if you ask me, but far more notably than the face is the eyes. It's clear there is a problem there, it definitely looks unhealthy (But there's still a bias since I know it's causing problems for her body).
I am Mexican American and have Asian Flush Syndrome. Half a glass of wine and face is red and I feel very hot. I also start to feel nauseous and sleepy and can’t continue to drink. If I keep drinking I’ll kind of push through those symptoms especially if I’m in a really fun social environment but man do I suffer with awful hangovers where I’m puking all day.
taytay71092 There's some speculation that it resulted from natural selection around the time of rice cultivation - meaning that people were drinking so much rice wine that they were dying early and those with the mutation were protected against alcoholism and more successful at reproducing, but it's just speculation really. very difficult to know for sure news.sciencemag.org/plants-animals/2010/01/rice-domestication-blame-red-faced-asians -joss

So this is why they turn red in some animes when they drink
+ملحد و الحمد لله
They're certainly idealized after whites, though
*****
The fact that they have eye colors other than brown, and hair color other than black.
+ملحد و الحمد لله They are white

Smart.
Or they were christians.
@@dank6617 Jesus drank wine.
InandaroundTO Jesus made wine, but alcohol consumption is discouraged among the mor puritanical branches of Christianity

I got an Asian flush ad before this video
Yeah that sounds more like an allergic reaction
Well alcohol flush is an immune response so it's pretty much the same thing.
I think you have spanish flu or something
Sounds like you should not drink. Many people are allergic. The fact is, alcohol is a poison, and the high from it
is part of the effect of this. As your Dr. at your next check up.
Is drinking really that fun?
I never really understood that.
A lot of people say that so i guess it's fun
Yes it is
Yeah makes u feel good
Poisoning yourself can be fun
Dave102693 lol poisoning yourself? It’s not poison. Just wait til you’re not in middle school anymore.
"so we slamming these" this guy was ready to party
I used to party hard in my early 20’s despite the Asian glow. I just went outside a lot to cool myself off, and avoided cocktails (the sugar in them causes an excruciating stomachache). 10 years later and I’ve discovered the wonders of Pepcid. I swear it completely eradicates the glow if you take one prior to or while drinking.

Why would you care what colour she is? You admitting to being racist then?

Hey you're the one making a thing about her colour... Just saying.

dude... because I have a preference doesn't mean I'm racist get over yourself
Greggory Picoli
Depends what your "preference" is based on. But what do I care? You can be racist if you want. Doesn't make a difference to me.
Am I the only one who never knew that this was a thing that happened?
WheresPoochie I'd never heard of it either, but I did have a Japanese roommate once and he turned beat red after having a drink.
I've never heard about this too Lol
+WheresPoochie I knew of "alcohol flush" if that is what you want to call it, but this is the first time i hear about "Asian flush".
By this, Serbs are actually Asian.
My mom has it, but she is white.
bambarby im asian and i have never heard of such a thing
However, many east asians don't go red when drinking rice based alcohol, it's mainly when they drink wheat based, having to do with genetic mutations. Maybe westerners would turn red when they drink rice based alcohol, someone should try this out
westerners still turn red. there's a name for it - "gin blossoms"
Rice-based too, not a difference.
I relate, I can drink and drink amaretto and not flush or feel gross but certain alcohols like tequila take me down immediately
All alcohol makes me go red, but for a different reason--rosacea.
When I drink, my face shows no sign of changing color.
When I meet Joss Fong, my face turns red.
+Northstander The missing enzyme occurs in all ethnic groups. But it is far more prevalent in East Asians.
Hey I think error bars in graphs at 2:41 look pretty huge.

I agree with your point. But... Isn't calling it "Wild type" more terrifying.
"Most non-Asian people." You happy?
I'm European and I suffer from this quite badly. However, I found that indigestion medicine helps with this completely. So, if you have asian flush, ranitidine (active ingridient) can help. you will find this is most pharmacies. Take a tablet before drinking, and it helps digest it. Just don't abuse it as of course, mixing medicine and alcohol is not ideal. I do this on a very rare case.
ok this is late as hell and it'd probably be useless by now but at 2:30 the girl's fingernail has a black line running through it which can be normal but it can also be a sign of melanoma

In the US, Asian is shorthand for East Asian.

Only watched because I knew Joss made and would be in the video.

I didn’t realize the flush was a result of Acetaldehyde build-up. It makes me wonder why this wasn’t selected against with how much people drink.
the answer is the populations were this occurred historically did not drink

Can be an alcohol intolerance or slight intolerance
I'm the same way and am white. I always was ignorant to it and just dealt with the redness and feeling super hot while drinking up until recently when a friend said I should Google Alcohol flush syndrome. I soon find out that I'm pretty certain to have this alcohol intolerance and now have decided to completely give up drinking bc of the adverse health affects it said it can have long term when a person has this. Thanks for listening, internet.
I wouldn’t worry too much about it, I wouldn’t have noticed unless you made a video about it.
Agreed. I wish I could trade my acne for "Asian Flush"
The fact that I am watching this and I don't drink makes me feel proud of myself.
Some tea, perhaps.
Ah finally I mean it's not an actual diagnosis but it's a perfect explanation for why I get flushed even after one drink. It's also one of the reasons why I don't drink anymore. Thanks for putting this out.
I got an ad for an Asian flush medicine before this.
LOL
So later on in life, I tried drinking alcohol. :)
Veravanwhoop that’s sad
Veravanwhoop its your native american side thats causing it, native americans decended from asians and thus are more related to each other
Native americans are notorious alcoholics they don't suffer from this asian flush and neither do other native mix latinos. Native Americans actually predate asians.
Just keep an eye on it. Rosacea causes warm flushes, too. That's something that a doctor can help with. If it's untreated, it can become very unsightly down the road.
