BC Road Trip Time Machine - Highway 1, Horseshoe Bay to New Westminster: 1966

- Hey Vancouver! Get ready for a ride down memory lane because our BC Road Trip Time Machine is heading your way. Our archival photolog footage rolls its way from Horseshoe Bay, through West Vancouver, over the Lions Gate Bridge, into downtown Vancouver - along Georgia Street, up Main and out Kingsway, giving you a glimpse of Vancouver as it was in 1966. (It’s safe to say we’ve come a long way from the fledgling port town that we were).
So sit back, relax and watch this glimpse of a world long gone by in the rear view mirror. Get the full scoop: www.tranbc.ca/...
Wow...now that is an impressive perspective of how the city of Vancouver was 50 years ago! Such a stylish period of cars, buildings and of course the way people dressed. Neat :)
I wish I had a time machine. This was cool to see, so much has changed.
I recommend slowing the speed in the video settings wheel I set the speed to 0.25 and it made all the difference the video was so much easier to follow.
I LOVE seeing the old way Vancouver use to be! Being born here in the mid 70's I miss the old ways of life. It would of been nice for the film to be slower because the 0.25 speed is still too fast to feel the antiquity of old Vancouver as I would like to. Thanks!
A thousand thanks for this! I didn't realize it continued on down Kingsway. What memories this brought back. I was 6 years old when it was filmed, but I remember so much when I see this. I remember going to Simpson Sears in Burnaby every Saturday after a big pancake breakfast, and I remember shopping at the Safeway store near Tyne, but I don't remember it being in that old location! And I so remember the huge Nabob coffee man near Sears on the huge green lawn of Kelly Douglas, and I remember the nursing home on Kingsway with the old woman rocking on the sign out front. And we attended the little church at Kingsway and Rupert with "Jesus the Light of the World" sign. (my Dad helped build that church in 1950) I could go on and on. Thanks again! It was all so wonderful.
This is probably the coolest video I’ve ever actually watched
i just keep backing this up to catch everything! i want to see the stills. This is amazing!!
Glad you like it! Check out some stills on Flickr: www.flickr.com/photos/tranbc/albums/72157665703075459
So basically the road capacity hasn't changed in 50 years. No wonder there's so much traffic today!
What a trip down memory lane. Loved it! Wish it was longer, even real time.
So wonderful to see! Thank you! 3 years before I was born!
I think this predates the Georgia Viaduct, so there would be a bit of the original Hogan's Alley in there. You get glimpses of things like the Ivanhoe, Pacific, and Cobalt Hotels, the 2400 Motel, Mountain View Auto Court, at least one White Spot, a Jimmy Pattison dealership, the old Strand and Hyland Theatres, and a lot more. Fantastic!
robatsea2009 2400 hotel still stands and looks exactly as in this video
The Eldorado Hotel at Kingsway and Nanaimo and the London Guard Auto Court (both now gone) can also be seen.
Hey Ministry.......... This video only goes to Burnaby at Royal Oak Ave.
It's a totally awesome video though. Brings back some good memories.
This is amazing. This drove right by my old neighbourhood around 4th and Main and it was cool to see all the buildings that are now long gone. In lieu of a time machine, this is the next best thing!
definitely adjust playspeed to .25x for best(still not ideal) effect. easier to see landmarks, business names and other details. sure would have been nice to see a wider, smoother field of view, but that WAS the technology of the day! great trip back!! ;o)
Wow. I drive these exact roads literally every day. Really cool to think this was the 66s. Thanks for the upload.
I hope they post more of these fantastic films!
Wonderful. Brings back more MPH (Memories per Mile) for me than anything so far. Especially appreciate the the Upper Levels Highway with glimpse of the X house (on right, before Taylor Way, at 1:15), and the ride across the old Georgia Viaduct. Thank you.
Memories per mile - we just may have to borrow that one :)
Wow ! 51 years ago ! over half a century ! (and to think this was a horse and Wagon Trail from New Westminster another half century before this film ! (1916), Well I guess there were cars (mostly Ford Modle T's) on the road and less horses in 1916. would love to see the same route from Stanley Park To New Westminster in 1916 way before Lions Gate Bridge even existed !
It is cool to look at. When renovating our house we found an old newspaper from 1959 and it mentioned the 2nd narrows bridge accident.. One of the articles featured a US tourist from Texas? who brought a movie camera for his own recording of the trip. It would be cool if someone found that.
Very cool video. Lots of memories there for sure. It stops at about Royal Oak and Kingsway in Burnaby though. Doesn't go to New Westminster.
I was the one driving. What a day.
I remember walking over the old Georgia St bridge with my grandfather
I was born and raised in the east Vancouver area around Kingsway and Killarney. I remember the old SuperValu on Kingsway and Earles.
I recognize a lot of this, back in the 70's the city grew very slowly, Burnaby wasn't even a big place back then and there was way way way fewer tall buildings downtown Vancouver, now it's just overwhelming with tall buildings and it gets uncomfortable sometimes. I think the exponential growth started with Expo 86.
Comparing Vancouver 1966 is similar to what Edmonton is like now.
Bridge over the Capilano river hasn't changed much.
This was awesome to watch. I take Kingsway literally everyday and also I live out in New West. Thanks for sharing this:))
Interesting to see how it was like back then. Before I was born.
Very cool. I drive the LGB every day from DT to West Van. That White Spot and Chevron (now an empty lot) along Georgia looks very familiar. Park Royal looks pretty much the same too. Also, look at all the gas stations along the way... Now we only have 1 left DT. Along Kingsway from Willingdon to Royal Oak looks crazy different now with Metrotown and all the towers there.
I want to go back in time and tell everyone to buy as much property as you can. You'll be a millionaire by 2017.
don't have to go back that far. If you invested a little over $100 in Bitcoin 6 years ago you would be a millionaire today.
Tell me about it.

Correction, billionaire.
Dave Hoff billionaire*
Thank you. I have been waiting ages for this
Amazing footage! Vancouver looks so empty :)
PS: I noticed, that entire footage crossing the Lions Gate bridge was done in the middle lane, which was closed to both directions at the time. Some special photo vehicle like 1966 version of Google Maps car, but with right of way? :)
Agree, would love to see this film in real time.
The Dragon Inn and Simpson-Sears are memorable Burnaby landmarks!
Memory around that time of myself in a Triumph TR3A and a buddy in his Austin-Healey just "tearing up" the Upper Levels Highway. Today I could walk faster on certain parts. Time for a rebuild.
Even back in 1966 there are slow drivers driving in the left lane.
Impressive how well developed and organised it was even then (road condition, markings, etc). I wouldn't have thought that the middle lane on Lion's Gate bridge was traffic light controlled in 1966! I am guessing the lane was closed in both directions in order to shoot this video, and it's not just the driver who is simply ignoring the red light :)
This is genius, thank you for sharing
I really wish I grew up in this era...such a better place than the overpopulated lower mainland now
Tony Tanti how is the lower mainland overpopulated?
I grew up in that era, great memories. Most of the lower mainland back then were farmland.
Overpopulated? Have you been to any of the other big cities of North America? A lot of areas are protected by the city so no high-rises can be built. That's good so that the cityscape stays unchanged, but also bad because there's not enough housing to meet the demand.
Also don't forget that you wouldn't get any of the worldly cuisines and varied products you can get in Vancouver today. No Skytrain either. None of the modern comforts you are used to :)
It looks like it passes through my old neighbourhood in those last 30 seconds. In which case, near the end it passes Central Park followed by what would become Metrotown.
In spite of how very different the sides of the road look. The experience of driving, the design of the infrastructure along the way... Nothing. Has. Changed. In. 50. Years.
Scary to think how today’s provincial and municipal engineering departments are still stuck in a 1960s design concept.
THIS IS SO COOL!!!
Interesting vehicle- instrument panel looks like an aircraft yet the engine is clearly that of a lawnmower.
Saw only one building taller than four storeys outside Downtown Vancouver. Crazy.
Please make a companion video along the same route today.
A side-by-side would be interesting.
i feel old
This is cool.
Any chance you could post these awesome films in real time? Even if it means multiple posts? The jerkiness detracts from full enjoyment of all the incredible details.
Thank you for posting!
Hi Kenji. We slowed down the original speed by about 30 per cent. You can slow it further by clicking the gear icon at bottom right. Thanks for watching!
VERY COOL!! Would love to see it at regular speed!!
Glad you enjoyed it. You can slow it down by clicking the gear icon at bottom right - you'll see the options.
😍
All those cars are cool and have personality!~ unlike today....
Maybe some canadiana tunes from that period, instead if the projector sounds. Neat vid though...the rural roads still look pretty much the same.
stomping Tom conners!
Steph Ss There weren't any Canadian Sounds in that era.
RaivenBC, Naww, I vote for Beatles, "long and winding road" or "yesterday" or Rolling Stones "time is on my side" ? lol not, or "Satisfaction" Well just turn off sound and play whatever damn music you like ! lol
Fantastic stuff! Please do Quesnel to Prince George next!!! :-)
This was recorded in 1966...
We have Prince George to MacKenzie, and on Chetwynd and Dawson Creek. We'll see what we can do about Quesnel to Prince George. ua-cam.com/video/eh-5q-Dktck/v-deo.html
True, but we have a whole collection we're digitizing from 16 mm film. Here's the current playlist: ua-cam.com/play/PLKHNpQ_j-IWG8CG_KN7cwl5mMO2bz2x8w.html
So many gas stations. There must be at least 30 gas stations in this video.
Wow
Is there more footage of Burnaby to New Westminster ( Kingsway to 12 th) ?
It snowed in Vancouver today
Looks more like Lion's Bay,wow, have times changed. Why they didnt do the Iron Workers is beyond me.
cant wait to move back to BC and get out of Onterrible.
More please..
Kewl.
how did I get here?
Neat 🤓👍
trippy
Wow! How cool is this!! Our tax dollars at work! Very, very interesting!
At 1:31 is that a regular Ford Falcon or a one-year-only/Canada-only Frontenac?
I would go back in time and tell my parents to invest in bit coin and property’s
Great, but annoying film sound drones on.
You would hardly find a low-rise, let alone high-rises....
Very interesting but lose the fast forward, the stupid frame of the car dashboard and the very annoying old film ticking noise. Just show the film at regular speed with no music or soft unobtrusive background music.
Thanks for the feedback, Dylan. We actually slowed the original 16 mm footage down. UA-cam allows you to slow it further, if you like - click the gear symbol at bottom right to choose your preferred speed. You can also press the mute button if the projector noise annoys you.
Poor Dylan; he's too young! I loved the footage. When my Dad played old films for us as a treat when we were little, in the 1960's, the footage was also this fast.
Thanks for the tip about the gear setting; I never knew that!
Thanks MinistryofTranBC, I already did that, much better at 1/4 speed,, easier to pause and locate signs, iconic buildings, what people wore, and things that are now gone or didn't exist .. yet. Keep publishing these video's. It's Wonderful to "escape" back into memories of mine at 10 years old.
Lol, a polite beatdown from the ministry of transportation.
The sound is so annoying
