  • This circa 1976 film opens with a montage of world leaders including President Gerald R. Ford, Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, and Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev as the narrator explains how “peace often seems a respite between wars.” As a result the US must work at being prepared for conflict as “strength is the best deterrent to war.” As a result, the US remains ever vigilant with military bases established around the globe, as well as ships at sea, including aircraft carriers. While the successful operation of an aircraft carrier is a team effort, we’re told near mark 03:00, including aircraft attack squadrons assigned to the ships “to get the job done.” The best squadron, it is suggested, are those with the Grumman A-6 Intruder, and by mark 04:30 we’re finally provided with a film title: “A6E Intruder: Any Weather … Any Time.” (The A-6E, the definitive version of the Navy's A-6 Intruder attack bomber with upgraded navigation and attack systems, was introduced in 1970 and first deployed in December 1971.) The film includes A-6 Intruder footage and on-the-spot interviews with pilots and air wing commanders who discuss the aircraft’s capabilities. The aircraft is shown flying through heavy fog and thick clouds as the narrator discusses some of the fighter’s on-board computer systems, radar, and navigation systems (mark 05:30). The aircraft is considered one of the most potent attack weapon for Vietnam War-era US Navy Carrier battle groups, we’re told. The viewer is given access to film footage of action in the air as well as in the field (mark 08:26) and a number of interviews with US Marines discussing their bombing runs. Although no aircraft is all things for all missions, says the narrator at mark 12:08, the A-6 is often the choice, in part due to its ability to carry a large weapons load, as we see additional scenes of the fighter in flight and pilots discuss maneuverability. “Readiness is what it's all about,” states the narrator at mark 14:30, while an officer notes at mark 17:30 how, in Southeast Asia, the A-6 was the “sophisticated” aircraft needed to fight the enemy.
    The Grumman A-6 Intruder was an American, twin jet-engine, mid-wing all-weather attack aircraft built by Grumman Aerospace. In service with the United States Navy and Marine Corps between 1963 and 1997, the Intruder was designed as an all-weather medium attack aircraft to replace the piston-engined Douglas A-1 Skyraider. As the A-6E was slated for retirement, its precision strike mission was taken over by the Grumman F-14 Tomcat equipped with a LANTIRN pod. From the A-6, a specialized electronic warfare derivative, the EA-6, was developed.

    I just found this video with my dad, William "Westy" Westerman, as the thumbnail. Brought a tear or two to our family to see this video since dad's been gone 7 years.
    Thank you so much for publishing this!

      Scott, your dad was my CO at the time. I did serve with VA-34 and I still have my Blue Blasters patch of the same kind your dad had on his jacket. My people whom I served with around 1975 are going in spurts as well. It is nice hearing from you.

    Cdr Westerman was my first CO in VA-34. Worked in the AT shop and as Flight Deck TS. Enjoyed working on the aircraft, on board USS John F Kennedy, CV-67.

    The A-6 as far as I am concerned is the older brother to the A-10,bring the A-6 back,it's still a kick ass aircraft

      Not really, they have totally different missions and approaches. The A-6 is designed for night and all weather attack in zero visibility, long range strike and interdiction missions, and is considerably higher performance than the A-10, which is an anti-tank and CAS aircraft designed to loiter over the battlefield and kill enemy armor. The only things they have in common is that they are both attack planes, and both slower and less glamorous than typical fighters. Although an A-6 isn't really that slow, and it cruises at the same speed most fighters do. They rarely go over .75 Mach on any routine mission. The A-10 is straight wing.

    From its debut, it lasted into the 90s like they said . A great plane it was for what it could do at the time. I miss the Intruder. As a mechanic like I was in the Navy in the late 70s early 80s, it was a good plane to work on. The " CSD " Constant Speed Drive Starter Generator component was not a very good unit. We had to replace them many times for generator failure. Also had many Oil sensor pressure switches the size of a spark plug that failed on the CSD. If the switch was faulty, the engine would not fire up the combustion cans. Engines running normal During the start up sound of the engines RPM's increasing it was awesome to hear.

    In 1989 if the USN had wisely decided to go with the A-6F ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grumman_A-6_Intruder#A-6F_and_A-6G ) instead of foolishly with the A-12A Avenger II the A-6 would likely still be in service.

    Worked on EA-6Bs for a few years. Those things were along way from what I would call reliable. Maintenance was brutal on those things.
    Edit: just saw this video is 3 years old and it just popped up in my feed.

      Great aircraft - but it seems to have lacked the avionics-development that so benefited the A-6.

    At this time period, was the A-6 really overall superior to the F-14 and it's net capabilities?

    • @travistolbert2647
      @travistolbert2647 Рік тому +2

      The Intruder was a sub-sonic all weather bomber with terrain following radar and blind bombing capabilities. The Tomcat was a super-sonic all weather dogfighting interceptor that could carry bombs if it absolutely had to. You are trying to compare aircraft with very little in the way of common rolls. The Tomcat would never be expected or be able to cross the beach at night in bad weather flying 200ft off the deck and attack a target that the pilot and bombadier navigator would probably never see. Nor would the Intruder be expected to fly at 35,000ft and perform long range missile intercepts on attacking cruise missile carrying bombers.

    • @justforever96
      @justforever96 9 місяців тому +1

      They had completely different missions and design goals, they aren't even comparable in any way. The F-14 was a pure interceptor and air superiority fighter that didn't even have the ability to carry bombs until they patched that in late in it's career just in case, the A-6 was 100% a bomber, designed to attack ground targets at night and in poor weather when jets like the A-4 or even A-7 had problems flying. Neither one could do the job the other one did, so there is no answer to that question. That's like saying "which was better, the P-51 or the B-25?" Better at what? They were both the best in the world in their own categories at the time.

    War is a racket. Mind your own damn business, Mr. America, and save TEN TRILLION DOLLARS just between 1947 and 1987. "US INTERESTS," indeed. What a crock.

    • @justforever96
      @justforever96 9 місяців тому +1

      You are assuming we just paid that money and it just vanished into thin air was never seen again. It was paid mostly to US companies, who paid US workers, and bought materials from other US companies. They paid US taxes, the workers paid US taxes, and so on. That money didn't just vanish.

    • @oswaldullman2145
      @oswaldullman2145 9 місяців тому

      @@justforever96 Oh sure, you may be right in strictly fiscal terms. But my greater points, especially in connection with your comment are:
      1. The United States hasn't waged a "legitimate," declared war since 1945. Though to be sure, we have intervened massively in places where we have no genuine national interest. America has no real right to maintain 800+ military bases in 100+ countries, etc.
      2. All those trillions of dollars would have been far better spent on infrastructure, social needs, the public welfare, non-military research and development, etc. Not on the Military Industrial Complex Dwight Eisenhower warned us about in 1961, which is monumentally wasteful and destructive.

    The a6 is a fabulous aircraft and very mission capable, without this plane the strike packages could not get to the target because the Sam's would blow them from the sky

    • @justforever96
      @justforever96 9 місяців тому +1

      You are thinking of the EA-6B, which was derived from the A-6. The A-6 is just an all weather attack jet, it is one of the strike planes, not an ECM or counter SAM aircraft.
