2013 Dodge Grand Caravan - high mileage check-in - 6+ years ownership - review - what broke?

  • Purchased in ‘14 or ‘15 with around 20k miles from car max, with power train warranty still in tact, plus warranty from car max. This vehicle has been very reliable for us after a couple of things that were fixed under warranty.
    1- transmission shredded itself and would barely move within within a year of purchase. Power train warranty repaired. Was at dealer for a solid week before we got it back. Not further issues.
    2- passenger rear door motor failed while under warranty. Took dealer a few days to fix. No further issues.
    3- rear media screen failed twice. Purchased ribbon cable on eBay for around $40 and repaired myself. Saving 700ish dollars quoted by dealer.
    4- thermostat failed around 80-90k - I have a video posted that might say the mileage. Part was cheap and repair was pretty easy for a first timer.
    5- driver door window regularor failed. Cable broke wrapping up in the motor and shredding stuff. Part was cheap, repair was a pain but I managed to get it done and save at least a few hundred bucks.
    Other than that it’s been regular wear and tear, and nothing and worn faster than I would expect. We have had many road trips and memories in this van and it’s been pretty good to us.

      Ours is still goin strong :) Had to get the serpentine belt, and AC pump replaced a coupe weeks ago, but that's the first major thing it's needed besides an alternator, and we've owned it for 8 years now. She's almost at 160K miles, and we have been hearing a grinding sound around 1100 RPM, so the next thing it probably needs is some transmission work. I'd say that's pretty impressive for something over 150K miles tho :) @@simbathelionkingcat

    I have been doing lots of research because we need to really dump our Odyssey. People really hyped up the Odyssey and I got one to haul my family around. It’s turned out to be a money pit basically put in about $2500 in two years of ownership and months of down time total and honestly it needs probably $2000 more of work. I’ve read a lot of people saying stay away from the Grand Caravan but since taking advice on the Odyssey now I think I’m gonna take the opposite route and check out a Grand Caravan. Being on a budget it seems to be what’s leaning me to maybe jump on one. Thanks for the review the ones I’ll be looking will probably be 2015 and newer.

      Sorry to hear that. Vehicle troubles SUCK. I’m aware too that grand caravans don’t have the best reputation but……we are pretty happy. First one shredded the trans within warranty and was fixed for free so hard to complain on that. Since then it’s been pretty smooth. I wish you the best of luck!

      I didn’t know that! Pretty good deal too. As for your purchase, that is pretty high mileage but if it’s got decent service records and you can get it checked out - it can last plenty. I think majority of cars can last almost indefinitely, it just depends on how well it’s cared for. Good luck!

      No, my wife wanted an SUV and I found a good deal on a 2012 Hyundai Santa Fe. It also had relatively high miles (186k) but it ran great and was in pristine condition. It's still running and looking great. Just oil changes and air filters, that's it. And no car payment!

    Mine has 280000km I had it since new, never changed the tranny oil and change the oil every 5000km.,
    Only problem was the thermostats and front wheel bearing. Never tuned either. It's been pretty good to me.

    How many miles does it have now? Do you haul anything with the hitch? Hows the transmission? And when should the transmission fluid be changed.

    • @DADMOBILE_Garage
      @DADMOBILE_Garage  2 роки тому +2

      About 115k miles. Transmission is working great, have not changed the fluid BUT the transmission was completely replaced under warranty at about 30k miles because it shredded itself. Nope have never hauled anything with a hitch……I just realized I don’t know what the trans service is. I’ll have to look into it.

      @dandyfunhouse 9 місяців тому +2

      I've always heard trans service on the 62te transmission is every 60k miles. Fluid and filter. Also you shouldn't use eco mode because that causes extra stress on the torque converter which causes premature trans failure. (learned that recently)

    Hey guys, maybe you guys can help out?
    Im thinking about purchasing a 2013 caravan (3.6litr v6) with a 135KM the van has been owned by one owner, who did regular maintenance on it...i've been reading up on them and everyone has mixed reviews but from what i've read the 2013's have a lot of transmission problems anyone have experience with this? anything else to look out for?
    I did do a test drive and it seemed fine but I was only going about 50/70 km around the city, I did floor it and didn't notice any stuttering or anything of such , however the owner did say when he puts it in ''ECO MODE'' he notices a slight change with the transmission shifting and that it takes awhile to pick up in speed? something along the lines of that, I didn't really understand that but is that normal? I plan on taking it to an mechanic to get it checked out so hopefully everything will be good! THANK YOU!

    • @DADMOBILE_Garage
      @DADMOBILE_Garage  2 місяці тому

      Eco mode makes the transmission shift sooner so that the engine stays at lower rpm and gets better mileage- so that Is probably normal/fine. shudder or a whining sound from the transmission would be bad. If it’s got good maintenance records, and you can get a pre purchase inspection you will probably be ok. The transmission on my 2013 did go out around 50k miles, but after replaced never had another issue. Good luck!
