you can chat to your companions, but you probably will get most info from them in private at camp.

Every time you said wish we had a rouge to open this I was like go into the tavern! It seemed like you were avoiding it. 😂 Leliana isn't just a companion but a major character in the Dragon Age series.
Anytime you plan to go to a chantry/temple/talk to chantry people is a good time to take Leliana.

The small village of Lothering took two long episodes by itself, and it's still technically just setting up the story. There's a lot more time to get to know your companions, and plenty of opportunities to travel with different combinations.
Once in the game proper, you'll be able to set up a camp with all of your companions available to talk to individually - sort of like the Normandy, really. Thats where you'll really get to know them.
And like with Sten, there can be so many different ways to solve problems in this, sometimes in ways that may not seem obvious at first. I always persuade the Reverend Mother to release Sten to my custody, so I've never had to try anything else. The only downside to this vast array of options is that some might offend a companion or two. And you can lose companions if you piss them off enough. 🤷 As your party grows, it can be helpful if your active companions are of a similar mindset on your actions and approach to situations.
I can think of five other companions to find; another rogue, a mage, 2 warriors, and a special class. You already met two without knowing it. 😉

Sten is really an interesting character. I personally think getting to know him was worth it.

    Some mod advice:
    1) The mod you're using to have an extra slot for the dog is known to have bugs. Use at your own risk. Having an extra party member also makes the game a lot easier, but whether or not that matter is obviously subjective.
    2) Qwinn's Fix Pack is a must if you don't already use it, as it fixes several hundred bugs.
    3) If you have the Ultimate Edition of the game, which includes the Feastday DLCs, you will soon have access to a large number of Feastday Gifts & Pranks for free via a character you meet. Do NOT use them. They are cheat items to greatly boost your approval with your companions. Doing so will break the natural progression of those relationships and you'll miss out on a lot of the character developments. There is a mod called "Immersive DLC Integration" that alters those items to prevent this.

I do have the fixpack, so hopefully that helps. As for the dog mod... I'm sure the pup is worth it :D

An option for Sten is... Leliana is friends with the Revered Mother. If she accompanied you to the chantry, she can convince the Revered to release Sten.
I always liked to play as the dog. It helps (if one does so) to have the combat tactics in good order for the rest of the crew. There's many interpersonal conversations between the different characters and you must play them to get all the entertaining dialogue. (It also works out for choosing your favorite character combination. )
Make sure to keep track of inventory and keep all your crew in top condition!
    Well done, PLAY ON!

Alternatively, you can just invoke the right of conscription, the reverend mother cannot refuse you by law. Sten is an interesting character with an unusual cultural background

Hey, Liera great video. Before u leave lothering ask leiana about it as she can give u some history on various towns and locations throughout the game. Also don't forget she can pickpocket u can pickpocket pretty much everyone in the village and the merchant by the chantry has a decent crossbow u can pickpocket off him. Also the merchant in the tavern, whom u gave poison too has a good dagger with good enchantments that also give u a codex entry. Enjoying ur playthrough keep up the good work.

    >2:25
Happens often with mages :) When you release control of your character, they will switch to AI and use whatever tactics was set for them. In this case, a tactic is set to automatically turn on Death Magic probably with the condition "Self:Any" telling the game that the spell should always be active. You can avoid that either by changing the condition (try for example Self:Health:"I am Sten of the Beresaad"
The way he introduced himself here is peculiar. As you might learn later. It's a Qunari thing :)
    >27:25
It would be that much simpler with Leliana at your side (if you had recruited her at that point) because the revered mother would trust someone she knows so at some point in this conversation she would have asked her opinion and Leliana would have supported your request. And she can pick locks too! Two birds, one stone... :D It's also a little hidden tutorial to show how having the right companion in your party at the right time in the right place can lead to a different outcome. The problem is to determine what the combination of right time/companion/place is :) Especially when you don't even know the said companion exists haha
    >32:37
Sometimes it works that way but those are rare occasions. I know this is the second time you have that happens in two episodes but I wouldn't count on it in general.
    >53:06
Well, that's kinda how ambushes work :D
    >55:21
Rogues are specialists at dual wielding at close range so a second dagger for Leliana would be most effective.
    >58:57
Good idea. But mainly because parading a convict in a town where everyone knows what he's guilty of could be... awkward, especially as you didn't actually get the authorization from the revered mother to release him :)
    >1:05:25 "That answers my question"
Note that she said "*may* not be there". Leaving the village is OK, going to any of the places making the main story progress is not. You can go back to Lothering as long as you don't hit the elves, the Circle, the dwarves, Redcliff... The point is: the main story must not progress in any way. As it is your first playthrough, staying in Lothering until you're completely done with it is of course the safe bet, but technically speaking, the game doesn't consider leaving Lothering as the turning point. You can safely go rest at your camp and go back to Lothering if you want for example...
    >1:12:59
The Qunari cap is just there so you can assess that this is actually Sten's equipment the guy was wearing. So you don't have to run everywhere to find Sten some proper weapon and armor.
    >1:26:00 "...bear with me"
Oh, I'm bearing :D Note though that this kind of "private" conversation is generally best done at your camp (in fact some special conversations and events only happen there). But you can opt to talk to your companions when you want, the camp thing is mainly more a question of atmosphere and simulated "privacy" (if one can call "privacy" sharing a relatively small area with all the companions).
You can talk to Cuddlebear too, maybe scratch his belly :) He has special options if you talk to him in the field that he doesn't have at camp.
    >1:32:41
It's a bit difficult at first to see what companions like or dislike with conversations alone. You said things Morrigan liked and you said some things she didn't and her approval of +3 is just the result of the added likes and dislikes but you don't really know what she liked and didn't like in your conversation unless you paid real close attention to her reactions to what you said and sometimes not even then.
Reading those reactions give you some clues to what a character is about though. Some characters are more difficult to read than others and that may depend on the player's sensibility. For example I always found Leliana the easiest to read...
Conversations do not guarantee an automatic positive approval. That depends on how the conversation goes. Worst case scenario, you may end up with some negative.
But hey, you gained two new companions here, one warrior (Sten is two-handed which is the main difference with Alistair -- less of a tank but more damage per hit) and a long hoped rogue... Finally, all those chests that were mocking you... you can show them now who's the boss :D
Just don't forget to upgrade Leliana's skill or the mocking chests could be back haha
BTW... does Leliana sounds convincingly French to you? Because the voice actress sure is :D

      @@1aler67
First, I actually never played DAO in French. I stopped playing games in their French version somewhere around 2005 because the French dubbing is in general atrocious in games.
Second, Liera is correct, Corinne Kempa, the VA for Leliana is indeed French. So What I was pointing here is that this accent is a real French accent, not a fake one. There are plenty of fake French accents in Dragon Age, especially when it comes to characters originating from Orlais... but not Leliana. She's as genuine as one can get :)

As others have mentioned, if you meet Leliana first and take her to speak with the Revered Mother, she helps to convince her to release Sten to you. Also, unless you are going to build her skills in a different direction, you should remember to get Leliana a bow.

1:39:36 It has been a while, but I think if you have Sten with you here things play out differently. Who you have in your active group has an effect when just having them "in reserve" may not.
I do think what the game's writers expect is that you will use your right as a Warden to "conscript" him, which was a choice in an earlier dialogue with her. Either way works of course.
