    Kovea Cupid Heater
    Dimensions : 10.3” x 7” x 5.3”
    Weight : 3lbs
    Fuel : Butane
BTU’s : I’ve read conflicting information concerning this stat; the Amazon listing states 5,633 but the Kovea USA listing states 3,333. If I had to guess based upon my experiences with this stove, it feels like 3,333 to me.
Price : At the time of filming, $110 on Amazon and the retail price is $140
    Review Pros :
Fair performance considering the small size of the heater; efficient for smaller spaces - use in a tent, in a smaller vehicle, smaller space. It is not comparable to a buddy heater in terms of overall heat performance but it’s not the same size either.
Talking about performance, up to 4 hours on low, almost 2 hours on high. There isn’t a huge difference in terms of heat output between low and high so running this in the middle will provide the overall best performance with good fuel efficiency. By the way, I stated in a previous adventure that I had heard that these stoves will run for as much as 6 hours on one can of fuel but after testing this out throughly, that isn’t accurate at all.
    - Easy to Use - easy to operate, easy to insert and eject fuel canisters
    - Small form factor - compact
    - Lightweight
    - Ignitor works very well.
    - Takes very little time for the heater to warm up - how quickly will it warm up your space? Depends on how big it is.
    - Low noise
    - Heater is well shielded - under the stove stays cool
    - Excellent build quality including the ceramic heating place
    - Storage box is included but I’ll be honest, it is CHEAP in every sense of the word.
    Review Cons :
    - More expensive than many butane heaters; many run around $80.
    - Butane isn’t the best performer in cold conditions - with that being said, I’ve ran this heater down to 20F without any issues but I had to warm up the fuel beforehand.
    - The company states that this stove has an Auto Shut Off Feature but doesn’t specify how it works exactly. I’m assuming that it involves the stove being knocked over. From what I have read, there are no oxygen sensors or anything like that; like with all heaters, you have to be careful with not only the heater but with air flow. A good carbon monoxide detector would be recommended.
    - Requires a fair amount of care to use safely. More so than say a Buddy Heater for an example.
    - The retail price is too high for this stove in my opinion; $140 is high and if you look around, you can find Buddy Heaters for that price or even less and they are substantially more powerful.
    - I’ve had an issue with this stove involving built up fuel pressure; this was detailed in the video.

It's $40 here in Korea. 7:42 Auto shut-off feature is about the pressure of the gas canister being abnormally high according to the Kovea Korean website. These kinds of butane heaters are very common in Korea because no green propane tank is available here, so nobody uses Buddy heater or Colman stove. Every Korean is very familiar with butane canisters because many Korean restaurants serve a meal with a butane stove on the table. Great review.

I have owned this heater for a couple of years now and I typically get 5-6 hours per canister when my Cupid is set to low when used in my 6x8 teardrop camper.
If you are only getting two hours per canister your Cupid is set on high .

Just purchased this heater for this winter. I will be using it in my suv (VW TAOS) to keep me warm.
I work on call for days straight, and there's times where I have to sleep in my vehicle.
I think with safety cautions, and good ventilation this would work well.
Also it's good to mention I chose Butane over Propane because Butane runs alot cleaner than Propane

I have had my lil Kovea Cupid Heater for 2 winters now and it's perfect to use in my truck camper or my teardrop camper. In the past I had used the "Little Buddy" in those small spaces and that was just too much heat for such small spaces. It's definitely NOT an all night heater. But in such small space that it's intended for, the Cupid heats up pretty quickly and take the edge off while getting ready for bed, or waking up and getting ready for the day and unlike the Little Buddy, the Cupid is a lower profile that I don't have to worry about knocking over. I don't remember how much I paid, but I'm certain it wasn't $140. My only con with it is, the little butane canister that can be problematic in lower temps (lots of work arounds tho) and IF Kovea had a duel fuel version of the Cupid that would allow me to attach it to a 1# or lager propane bottle, then CO, O2 and moisture issues aside, I would call it almost perfect heater for +/- 100sq ft

They’re $76 on Amazon right now. I own a Buddy Heater. I love it, but it’s too much for my Suburban or my tent. This is very compact. Looks to be abt 1/2 the size of a Buddy heater. Here the butane refills aren’t not to costly, nowhere near $30/12cans, so I’ll buy a few flats and I should have enough fuel to run this thing for A LONG dang time, even with the frequency that I truck/tent camp. Should have this in the next week.

Hey brother, it sounds to me like that particular unit you have has a faulty regulator. I've had my Cupid heater for around two years now and have used it in my rooftop tent about a dozen times at below freezing temps and not only does it last 6 hours on low (God honest truth), but there are no excess raw fuel expulsion issues. I would send that back and get a new one.

I have the Korean Version, No English tagging, bought 3 years ago on Ebay. I have a 5x8 enclosed trailer EOR from Hiker. It does a great job taking the chill off, plus I use a USB fan to move air around. Your usage time is spot on, High gives you almost 2 hours Low about 3 to 3.5. Used at the South Rim GC. 10 F at 7800 feet. Had to sleep with the fuel in my bag to get it to burn. Plus sometimes the igniter did not light it, had to use a wand lighter to get it started. Paid $99 for it. Yes I do have a CO detector in the Hiker. But after one season I carry it only for a back up or emergency heater while camping. I do have the 10K Btu Mr heater Buddy but too risky. Upgraded to a Diesel heater from Amazon for 140 Bucks. Thanks for the great work you do, Cheers.

I have this heater and works great in a 4 man tent. I agree with him not much different on low vs high. I did get approx 4 hours on low on one can. The temp that night was in low 40's and stayed very comfortable. The case is trash. Hinge part broke first time opened. So expect that. I have a Buddy heater for really cold but for more mild weather this is so much easier to pack and the fuel is also cheaper than the propane bottles. Butane also does not put out as much water vapor as propane so less chance of condensation. Overall I really like this stove.

@@azclaimjumper From what I've read the difference in water output is only very slight, probably not enough to notice a reduction. I can't find any reports of better results with other fuels either (e.g. alcohol stoves?) A diesel heater might be the best bet here.

  • @TheWtfnonamez
    @TheWtfnonamez Рік тому +2

I use a lot of devices utilising those butane cans and they are great, however ....
They behave very differently based on whether they are vertical or horizontal.
In the vertical position, the liquid butane sits in the bottom of the can, and gases off into whatever device you are using.
In the horizontal position, the liquid butane travels directly into the device, and usually gases off at the point of release (or ignition)
Basically this means that any device using the can horizontally, runs the risk of having a runaway effect, where liquid gas fills the pipes, and continues to gas out, long after you shut it at the valve. It also means that some remote camping stoves have a tendency to be a bit ferocious if you use butane cans laying on their side. I tend to try and prop the can up before lighting because its all a lot more tame.
I own a heater similar to this for emergencies, but personally I would rather stay warm by using a gas mantle, or by putting a heater attachment on a camp cooker. Its lighter, duel use, and the butane can is vertical. I got a little Campy Stove cooker and this is ideal. It actually comes with a heater shroud so you can use it as either a heater or a stove.
But yeah, Ive had a few scares with stoves using butane cans laying on their sides. They calm down a lot once the can is half empty obviously, as the liquid is below the height of the valve, but with a fresh can Ive had some jet engine flames, and then watched it continue to burn after I've turned it off.

The "Little Buddy" heater would make a much better comparison at 3,800btu than the 18,000btu "Big Buddy" that Luke mentioned many times in this video. It runs $60-$65 and is much smaller/lighter than both the Big Buddy and this Kovea. Because the fuel bottle is uprightin the Buddy heaters there is much less chance of liquid fuel coming out making fire balls that Luke mentioned his Kovea made

    • @dobrofool
      @dobrofool Рік тому +4

Exactly. AND the smallest MH4B at 3,800btu yields 5.6 hrs on one 16oz Propane tank.. you can get TWO pack Coleman tanks for just under $10, or the Walmart knock off’s for less yet… so the big pay off is in heat time yield/cost.
AND propane works better in cold than butane.
AND all Buddy heaters come with low-oxygen sensors as well as definitive accidental tip-over switches/ auto shut-off for safety.
Compared to (MH4B) for $63US (current Amazon).. I’d say the value and safety features = a no brainier. Honestly, this review helps me to appreciate the Buddy heaters much more

Yes but it can tip over and in my opinion after extensive use of both the Little Buddy and Kovea...the Cupid is WAY better and safer. The Buddy heaters also suck when trying to light in the middle of the night at cold temps. The Kovea has never failed to start for me on the first try. I will never use a Mr. Heater again if I can avoid it.

I have one of these I paid $50 for a couple years ago. It does not perform well in subzero temperatures due to the gas source. I use mine along with my hot tent for when my wood fire needs to be restarted early in the morning and it's part of my winter driving emergency kit. I have indeed run mine for 6 hours on the lowest setting but it's loud at that level because the flame flickers, but it is absolutely possible to stretch those canisters out. Also, you can find those canisters more easily than even the green bottles as they tend to be in supermarkets. I've had issues with fuel sources and supply chain outages so this is an important piece of kit for when I can't find green bottles or isobutane

9:13 your fireball scenario... this might have been that the fuel canisters got to cold. The fuel liquefied, wouldn't flow properly. turning it on and off and such, heated up the metal, which in turn heated up the fluid that was in the pipes allowing it to vaporize... when you switched canisters the pipes were still "warm" so it was able to heat up the new fuel and work properly.

Thanks!!!

I'd really like to have one of these Cupid butane heaters, but since I already have 2 Mr Heater Big Buddys, it just doesn't make much sense to spend $100 plus the cost of fuel and adding another type of fuel to my appliances. My camp stove uses propane like the Buddy heaters, so I only need to carry a few bottles for each camping trip. The Big Buddy on low is 4,000 BTU, so it's not much more than the Cupid heater anyway. The Big Buddy on low is a bit too much for my 3 and 4 person tents, but I just use it to warm the tent up when I am getting ready to go to sleep or when I am waking up in the morning. If I didn't already have the Buddy heaters, I would definitely pick one of these up.

Yeah, I was gonna say, I don’t store any of my camp stoves or heaters with the fuel attached. And butane is a bit temp touchy,so it needs to stay over 32 deg F or it WILL NOT work, at all. This will be great for when I truck or tent camp. I probably gonna get a diesel heater for my camper.

I camp with the portable buddy and always bring it in case its a chilly night. I saw you use that one many times and never thought it was that expensive. With my portable buddy I refill the 1LB green tanks myself so it really doesn't cost me to much. If I don't want to change tanks all night I have the long hose for a 20LB tank. I really enjoy your videos Luke! And thank you for this review. Could you please review Northface tents soon? We have one and really love it. Also we car camp lol so things to bring are endless lol

Regarding Northface Tents, Chris... I have a Roomy 2 that survived a severe thunderstorm (Tornado Near By) at a group campout in Michigan. It was the only tent not damaged or blown down and had only about a teaspoon of water inside. I am keeping that tent for life! : ) A comparable tent would be the Northface Stormbreak.

Mr Heater Portable Buddy for the win. $75, 4000-9000 BTU, auto shut off tip over, low O2 sensor, propane is cheap when you refill the 1 lb cylinder from a 20 lb, and you can run it from the 1, 5, 10 , 20 lb tanks.

Look out for propane or butane heaters that have a reflector behind the flame, a lot of them, by virtue of the reflector are capable of projecting a fireball about three feet. I have seen this happen, it completely melted the plasticey sweatshirt thing that the guy who was trying to light it was wearing, lucky he was wearing a cotton drill shirt under it. Could have been bad. This was a parabolic reflector meant to screw on to a hard bottle, Butane I think, common in Europe.

Im gonna have to say I'll stay with my buddy heater. While i realize that the size does play a factor in certain uses, id rather fix a spot for the buddy and have plenty of heat than run run three cans and still freeze my can off. I paid 89 for my smaller buddy, 120 for the large buddy. Thanks, for the honesty, I'll have to pass.

That spray of gas is what I saw, right before my first Soto G-stove 320 stove's internals went up on me, Luke. Might have to do with wind blowing it in spots where it shouldn't be blown to. Or could be from being shook around a lot.

Maybe if it had a battery powered fan, then that price would be a little better. I use a Big Buddy Heater in my camp trailer and with the fan moving the air, it's way more efficient than without. I even hacked mine to run off lithium batteries instead of D batteries.

The liquid pouring out may not be the fault of the heater, but a fault within the canister. Inside of the canister is a bent nossle facing upwards when the canister is correctly layd down (therefore the mounting groove) so only gas can pour out and no liquid. It may be that this nozzle was broken or mounted falsely during production. This also happens when the device is tilted the way the opening is facing downwards.

There are 10600 btu of energy in an 8oz can of butane, so if the unit is rated at 3000 btu, you have your duration answer.. The fuel may seem expensive at $2.75 at big box stores but I buy my fuel at the asian market for $1.25 a can..

Good heads up on this little heater.
I bought the Big Buddy Heater a few years back and bought an adapter to hook it up to a 20lb bottle to run in my 12x60 mobile home, and it gave me headaches. I went to electric heat a few days later!
I still have it, but I would only use it in a tent with ventilation, but that would probably be overkill unless it was a large tent!
I think this little heater would probably be more useful in a tent, but the Big Buddy Heater might be good under a tarp in the back of an open truck?

The only effective heat for a small temporary space is wood. A tiny or small wood burning stove. Good, still, dry heat. Camp heat is as important for drying as it is for heating. Wet heat doesn't dry anything. A small camper, a winter tent camp set up ... nothing beats a good quality tiny wood stove.
