I love how after 3 guitars, 2 drumkits, vocals and harmonica/keyboards you can still hear the bass
Augusto, that's a sharp observation. Not easy, and it's so true!
That bass is so powerful!
Probably has something to do with the fact that the front man was in charge of the mixing
these guys know how to bake a tonal cake.
What? it’s the only instrument taking advantage of the lowers notes and you’re impressed that you can hear it? Lol
When Stu pulls out the flute you know shit’s going down.

The drummers had to play for 30 min straight in sync with one another in mostly odd time signatures that are constantly changing, and I didn't hear one mistake or even messy part. I don't get it lol.

This is basically a drum battle with background music
Haha
Cavs won...
Lucas never gets enough credit. When you can hear his bass clearly in the mix, MAN he's good.
This is probably why Stu insists on doing the mixing for all of their live stuff, there's a VERY specific balance for their sound that has to be achieved, and he's the master of that chaos.
he is a rock steady son of a bitch. and it takes a rock steady son of a bitch to play gizz
@@Sentraman4 I wonder if he keeps a notebook of past mixes. Just a dirty, tattered book, the sacred texts.

The KEXP sound dude deserves a serious raise. You guys always nail it with your recordings.
The audio you hear was actually mixed by Stu (the singer), you can see it on the credits :)
Hell yeah! good to knoe
the mixing is a god damn gift from heaven
Makes you wonder: are you in heaven

it must be trippy for the drummers to stare at each other doing the exact same thing for half an hour
There are a lot of songs where they don't. There's an entire album where they play parts that rarely overlap - Polygondwanaland.

Story Time :) - I attended this show. I show up early, which is about 10am. I didn’t want this free show to fill up and not be able to get a spot. I was just getting into these guys, and discovered them at the start of their 2017 run, with FMB, and at this point, SKETCHES just released. I buy a copy of SKETCHES at the LITA record shop in that gathering space, and wait for the show to start. Being only a few months into these guys, I was not familiar with everyones name. As I waited for the show to start, in comes the whole band, bringing in their own gear, and setting up. They quickly set up and start hanging out and interacting with everyone. At this point, I totally felt ‘starstruck’ , and somehow worked up the gaul to ask Joey, who besides Stu was the only name and face I knew then, to introduce me to some of the band members around, which he very kindly did. Jason Galea was even there! It was so cool to be able to chat with those guys for a sec, and even get the record I bought earlier signed by everyone, who were so gracious with their time. They are all really nice chill guys. Then they played and holy hell, was I not expecting MOTU on a weekday morning, but wow was it an amazing show. I wish I could have become a fan from the beginning , but happy that I am on the train now. Those KEXP gathering space shows have been some of the best experiences of my life, tbh.
bro that’s so awesome!
Jealous of your experience. I love this set, amazing performance.

Cool story bro. No really, it was a cool story, thanks for sharing!
Damn, I'm so jealous! I didn't know about them back in 2017 otherwise I would've been there with you early in the morning, lol. Cool story!

There is hope
It's like every single one of the rock n´roll greats that have passed away are possessing these guys simultaneously.

Psychedelic BluesMan I hope Greta Van Fleet turns out great.
They're pretty okay right now. Definitely great at what they do.
Just looking forward to them experimenting in the future. (Soon)

I came for the unique name. I stayed for the unique music. 2 synchronous and impressive drummers, 3 guitars (one being a double/12 string electric), audible bass, flute, keyboards/soundboards, singing, harmonica, (I'm probably missing something) and it's all so well balanced. At no point did I feel like any of their myriad of flowing elements become domineering. It all just works together. I'm stunned by how much each band member is in charge of doing. It's so dynamic that it's hard to keep track of everything and you just kind of get sucked in.
I don't usually critique/pick apart music like this, but you've just gained a fan!
Did you know that they've also customized their guitars to play microtonal? ❤️👽

It's not dead. Just hidden
They should be ignored or encouraged to turn off mainstream radio.

Those cymbals are scarred war heroes and yet still they stand in the line of fire...respect
Joshua Standridge nah eric never plays em except for live, they'll last another decade or two I bet
I get a mental image of them being so beaten by then that they just look like mostly-blown copper dandelions
but Eric is a loving drummist I bet he would give them the best duct tape that money would buy and just keep them looking vaguely cymbalic by using a prolific amount of it
Lol as a pro drummer cymbals can outlast a couple generations of working drummers with good technique seriously. Crazy I can't figure out how the hell you can break cymbals like I can hit pretty hard but damn cymbals are fucking metal disks...
But I guess... that's because a common misconception is that the thicker the cymbals the more resistant it is, that's complete BS. A thicker cymbals will absorb much less of the impact and can therefore crack much more easily.
Older jazz cymbals like those have no reason to break whatsoever unless not put on felts. Also you can't like, beat a cymbal and and make an actual mark on it. Like, cymbals are hammered, that's why there are marks on them. You won't alter a cymbal shape by hitting it with wooden sticks...
Just to clarify. Also it's an insane amount of work to clean cymbals to make them shiny, I really don't care xD
Jas Bataille Yep. I polished my cymbals twice. Said “fuck it” after that!
Man's on the harmonica is the nastiest guy alive. Best rock music I've heard in years
Sucks to see Eric leave King Gizzard, at least he’s focusing solely on Flightless Records. Cheers to our favorite second drummer!!!

A Guitarist: What do you mean?
Band: What else do you play?
A Guitarist: I play the guitar...
Band: Got it. What other 4 instruments do you play?
yeah
man, that'd be cool
Thats actually the case with Pond and the live band of Tame Impala (Kevin Parker). These guys could easily switch between all instruments and still play all their songs perfectly. A bunch of multi instrumentalist friends
Me getting nervous, okay you got me... I also play videogames and use instruments in my work at construction, so that would be like 7 instruments and lots of videogames, that works doesn't it?
The band: Okay, maybe we could do something like "Money" but with construction tools.

I have a theory about Aussie bands. As a country, Australia is so separated from the rest of the world that it absorbs styles from all parts of the world and makes its' own amalgamation. I just started listening to KG&TLW a couple weeks ago, and every release is completely different from the former. I love the microtonal stuff. They are on their own plane, nobody even close to them. The best relation I can make is early King Crimson with Robert Fripp. Sufficiently weird and captivating. A welcome diversion for me these past couple weeks - given the state of the world, and having lost my best friend from high school last week. I can't wait to dive into all of this band's stuff.
Yep King Crimson.
You're spot on mate. In Australia we listen to everything that's out there as our local market is so small and generic. Occasionally, you get a band that surpasses everything else out there by bringing a special uniqueness. But bands like this are (sadly) not the norm. They do better abroad than locally. The 3 best Australian bands I could possibly think of at the moment are ALL touring the EU and US right now! These guys, Psychedelic porn crumpets and Hiatus kaiyote. Check them out as well. All so unique and wonderful. So proud that amongst all the rubbish, we at least have this to prove that Australia has something to offer if you know where to look.
@@danielsommariva Thanks, man! I just started digging the Crumpets. Never heard them before yesterday but I am sufficiently blown away!
if you like early king crimson you'll probably like black midi's last KEXP (the one from april 2021). heavy fripp / mahavishnu influence in the guitar but very unique - bruford even cited their drummer as one of his current inspirations.
@@danielsommariva Amyl and the Sniffers are also amazing. And all those bands are playing the northern hemisphere in their summer festivals etc. They'll come back soon. Don't fret.

For sure my favorite new band, right after Goose. At 70 years of age, I was never a huge fan of metal, but they do it pretty damn good. And that's it, they take metal and add a touch of psychedelia to it. I think they add that touch to everything they do, and I think they can do anything they want to do.

I keep coming back to this over and over again, I’ve seen these guys live and this is quite possibly one of the tightest sets I’ve ever seen in my life, extraordinary.... love the new album too, fucking incredible band
This is the performance that got me into King Gizz.
One day in 2016 or maybe 2015 my friend showed me The River, and it instantly became one of my favorite songs-I was into 60s and early 70s hippie music at that time-but I fell into the trap of expecting all their music to be like that, so I was disappointed by their other stuff when I initially heard it. I would listen to The River fairly often, but absolutely nothing else from them.
But then one day in 2017 I saw this in my recommended videos, and I was intrigued by the thumbnail of Stu holding the guitar up high on his chest, so I clicked on it and was blown away by how epic it is; it's a nice blend of punk and metal with elements of krautrock, plus of course the random awesomeness that King Gizz likes to throw in-flute, harmonica played in a hard rock style, 2 drummers-which somehow flows naturally and doesn't sound forced at all! And, at times, it also reminds me of a punk band which used to be one of my favorites back in my teens when I was into punk and metal: Rudimentary Peni.
After that, I had a more appreciative ear for King Gizz's style.
Woah, at 24:50, are the drummers alternating hihat 8th notes!? Thats really sick!!
