The drummer is Mike Portnoy. He had just left his band Dream Theater around this point in time and Avenged Sevenfold asked him to play drums on the album because he was one of the
Rev's biggest influences. Mike Portnoy is considered one of the best drummers in rock/metal of all time. This was the only album Mike Portnoy played on though.
My recollection is Portnoy played with A7X on this album while still technically in DT and was about to tour when DT decided to record their next album. When he refused to skip the tour he was essentially pushed out of DT
@@imopen2 That's correct. I forgot he was still in DT when he did this album.
Most of the drumming on the album was still written by the rev, portnoy did do some original stuff but Rev left a lot of stuff that needed to be recorded and mike was honored to do it and tour with them.
RIP to the Rev. Miss your music my dude.
The first time I heard of Avenged Sevenfold was when they came to Iraq in 2010. They said that Jimmy always wanted to do a concert for the soldiers. Out of respect to him they did it and they put on one hell of a concert in Baghdad, and I was personally introduced to their music and loved it.

"Afterlife" live at The LBC is a must watch (one of the best live performances ever) and "Buried Alive" their masterpiece in my opinion

"Seize the day" it's one of my favorite songs from Avenged Sevenfold
Nightmare is also their first album without The Rev, following his death in december 2009, it was also dedicated to him, hence the capitalized ''rev'' on the tombstone.
Fun fact, I still have an Avenged Sevenfold poster up in my room from when I was 14. My fave avenged sevenfold song is probably Afterlife. But Mike Portnoy played the drums on this album. He's from the band Dream Theater

The original drummer for Avenged was Jimmy Sullivan better known as the The Rev, he sadly died in 2009, we wrote this song just days before his body was found, they dedicated the whole Nightmare album to him, they brought on Mike Portnoy of Dream Theater to play the drums for this album

If you want to see a crazy, interesting, well made video by these guys, then May I recommend, The Stage. It’s off their most recent album, also titled The Stage, with their newest drummer, Brooks Wackerman.
That whole Album is straight 🔥👌💯! So anything of theirs is good but that album and newest 1 The Stage are Astonishingly good!

Avenged sevenfold was my first concert I ever attended , my Junior year (2010) I believe. It was AVENGED, 3 days grace and Bullet for my Valentine.
This song is about their late drummer the rev he told the band of the dreams he was having before he passed

The cool thing about this video is the different rooms are throwbacks to their older videos from the perception that it was all just a figment of his imagination. For example, dude dancing with the skeleton was dancing with a woman in Afterlife. Other dude with the big hand that was crawling on the top of the hallway had the same big hand in Bat Country, etc.
Critical Acclaim LBC should be one of the best performance from Avenged sevenfold , you guys will know the first drummer before he died

This was there first single that was turned into video, after their drummer passed away. That's why the drummer is not in the video and why it showed a drum set. That was was in honor to the Rev. RIP Rev.

To make this clear the rev ( the drummer) was the one that made like 60% the song himself and he did write the drums and mike was the one who played it for him when he passed away

The Drummer you're listening to here is Mike Portnoy. Mike rose to fame and prominence with his work with the Progressive Metal band called 'Dream Theater'. They are often regarded (and for good reason) as one of the best bands in Metal and especially in Progressive Metal (which is a sub-genre of metal music known for odd-time signatures and advanced musicianship).
Mike decided to depart from Dream Theater in 2010 due to him just generally being burnt out from that type of drumming. Around this same time, the Drummer for Avenged Sevenfold (Jimmy 'The Rev' Sullivan) had passed away. Jimmy's role model growing up was Portnoy. He stated in an interview once that the only person he would be okay sitting behind his kit would be Mike Portnoy.
So, when the Rev had passed away, Avenged Sevenfold approached Mike and asked him to play the drums on this album and the ensuing tour.

After their formation in California in the 90's from the Orange County scene, Avenged Sevenfold built their base from touring... they scored a major record deal and saw their 3rd album 'City of evil' reach gold sales in the US (half million copies) in 2005, and then the 4th self-titled album went platinum (1 million copies) in 2007. The band released a live/rarities CD/DVD in 2008 'Live in the LBC' and then began writing a new album in 2009... According to vocalist M. Shadows, drummer Jimmy 'The Rev' Sullivan had rehearsed and demoed the new album and was very excited about returning to the studio... Tragically, he passed away late in 2009 from a drug overdose 😪
Avenged Sevenfold were devastated, but they wanted to respect The Rev's wishes and record the new album 'Nightmare'... They approached Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy in 2010 about playing The Rev's drum parts in the studio... Having met The Rev before, and knowing that the late drummer was a huge Portnoy fan, he agreed.
So, Mike Portnoy recorded drums for the new album 'Nightmare'... and then announced he was leaving Dream Theater that year (He wanted to focus on other musical endeavors) and offered to tour w/ Avenged Sevenfold for the record. Portnoy played drums on tour for Avenged Sevenfold until the end of 2010. The album hit #1 on the US charts and went platinum again.
Ultimately, Avenged Sevenfold decided to recruit a new drummer in 2011, because after Mike Portnoy had quit Dream Theater, the band found themselves being blamed for his exit... They thanked Portnoy and carried on w/ new drummer Arin Ilejay until 2015... Veteran drummer Brooks Wackerman joined Avenged Sevenfold after, and has been w/ them since.
