No joke, its so good you dont even need to know the lore and injokes to enjoy the game. Knowing the references makes it more fun but the actual gameplay loop does not require that context to understand the game.
I feel like some of the collabs maybe require a little knowledge of the people and hololive. Since they are all made up of actual hololive colla partners and references so you'd sort of have to know about the people to know what might work.
Kay Yu is a very passionate fan and very hard worker. He and his team put so much love into that game and there's still more to come. Please, if you like bullet heavens just give it a shot. It's ENTIRELY FREE. Kay refuses to let us pay him.

Bullet Heavens fit in this unique space where they're so simple to develop that thousands of the have been made, and with that copious amount of entries, there are so many good ideas that end up rising to the surface. I've seen a lot of genres get so popular they end up with clones over the years, but I've never seen one produce so many diverse and interesting variations in such a short amount of time.
I feel like they're a branch of a rather longstanding genre of incremental games. Married to the Diablo-style ARPG dopamine farming sure, but the core structure is old and already known for its many and varied quick shot projects.
Holocure is easily one of the best fan games ever made. Kay Yu, the one in charge, could easily charge money for the game but he absolutely refuses to.
And you certainly wouldn’t guess that tentacle girl is a super calm chill streamer who draws incredible artwork live (seriously look up art by Ina’nis she’s incredible). And pretty much every one of them is an amazing singer to boot

A bunch of the random references I know of off the top of my head - all of the enemies are representations of mascots of the Fans, e.g. fans of Mori are skeletons and called Deadbeats -while yes those are their offices it’s more so based off of the weekly animations released on the main channel called Hologra (gra standing for graffiti) which follows wacky hijinks in the offices - the plug type and injection type asacoco are related to a graduated vtuber, Kiryu Coco, who had a bit where she would sell dr*gs called asacoco - yes it’s that kind of plug - psycho axe is a reference to suisei, she is known for her singing and her brutal attitude in games - the heads are the Koronesuki (korone listeners), korone designed them herself and that should say quite a bit about her personality - the song that plays when you open a box is Ochame Kinou, which is the most viewed Hololive cover - BL books are a reference when Suisei was living in a place she thought was haunted so she took it upon herself to exorcise the ghosts, and to do so she borrowed some yaoi from her sister to capture them in - 15:12 that is Mikodanye, a mascot costume (inspired by Mikudayo) based off of the talent Sakura Miko (who famously burned her house down in Minecraft with lava) she breathes fire here because she once claimed herself to be demon lord - 19:18 collab is the term used when 2 different vtubers do a stream together.
Enjoyed watching a friend play this and was legit entertaining to come to understand the systems seems like they added more locations or maybe my friend only played the open field one lol
My favourite part of watching anyone who doesn't know Hololive stream this game is the slow realization that it actually legitimately slaps, and then seeing the Hololive fans in chat desperately trying to explain 4+ years of like 40 different streamers lore in byte-sized messages that make them sound absolutely insane.
So regarding the Asian Man who keeps popping up that is the CEO of the whole company, who is popular and meme worthy enough for fans to put him in their fan games!
Best thing about Holocure is you don't need to know anything about Hololive to enjoy it. The references are just fun things added in for holo fans to get a laugh out of. And you can still do the opposite, play holocure and then learn about hololive and the talents I don't even know half the references, but it's still fun
It feels weird. I'm mostly an indie/Vshojo fangirl but HoloCure is both a good, approachable game that I sometimes wonder about breaking into the Holoverse... but I only have so much time on my hands. I should bust it out now that I have free time again.

A few minor corrections here because I'm a pedantic nerd: Rather than "the old ones", the powers that Ina serves are called the "Ancient Ones". That's why her book is called AO-chan. Only Korone's family name, Inugami, means "Dog god". Also she plays into it sometimes as a gag but it's really just a name, she doesn't have any special powers or anything so giving the translation in an introduction might give the wrong impression about her lol And her fan name is spelled "Koronesuki" which basically means "Korone liker". And she doesn't eat their fingers, she takes them so they have to stay for the whole stream to get them back at the end. She definitely always remembers to give them back =D It's not clear if EN Reco was canon or not. For what it's worth I also thought it was! And I think it was originally intended to be considered so, but I think some of the members aren't 100% on board with adding some of the stuff in there to their official lore.

A few minor corrections here because I'm a pedantic nerd:
Rather than "the old ones", the powers that Ina serves are called the "Ancient Ones". That's why her book is called AO-chan.
Only Korone's family name, Inugami, means "Dog god". Also she plays into it sometimes as a gag but it's really just a name, she doesn't have any special powers or anything so giving the translation in an introduction might give the wrong impression about her lol And her fan name is spelled "Koronesuki" which basically means "Korone liker". And she doesn't eat their fingers, she takes them so they have to stay for the whole stream to get them back at the end. She definitely always remembers to give them back =D
It's not clear if EN Reco was canon or not. For what it's worth I also thought it was! And I think it was originally intended to be considered so, but I think some of the members aren't 100% on board with adding some of the stuff in there to their official lore.
