"We got up early, Washed our faces, Walked the fields Put up crosses. Passed through The damned mountains, Went hellwards, And some of us returned, And some of us did not."
It does repeat itself, doesn’t it… the history… Hey hey rise up Ukraine ua-cam.com/video/iDG_hWlVda4/v-deo.html ! England is calling ua-cam.com/video/OB0YAVF-eOI/v-deo.html !
I love this album, it’s just so British no one else can write like this. Why is that? Our history, culture I don’t know. This and Pink Floyds The Final Cut are beautiful anti war albums that really make you emotional.
No banality and sounds excellent! Thanks to Polly and the band :-) The older she gets, the better music she makes and comes up with significant ideas for lyrics.
Shes one of those magical UK artists. Really different and unique. Love PJ and other eclectic musical brits like Massive Attack, Radiohead, Portishead, Tricky, Ian Brown, Unkle, The XX, James Blake, Fink, Scroobius Pip, Allflaws
Here is a story I learned when I visited Lithuania just as they were breaking free from Soviet rule. For those many years and decades of occupation, they would skirmish with the Russian soldiers going into the forest and fields putting up crosses jabbed into the ground, made in the traditional elaborate beautiful woven style of wheat fronds attached to wood bases. Occasionally the crosses would be bulldozed. And sometimes when they went there, they did not return.
I was going to write that the chords are similar to There Is A Light That Never Goes Out, only to find out that others noticed the same long before me. Both played with capo on the 4th fret. Who cares anyway: amazing song, amazing album.
An ode to another endless pointless war. Humanity is in the dark places.
"Our young men hid with guns"...you can feel emotion, compassion, regret in this verse. To all the young men still hid with guns.
well said
Tears every single time Thank you Polly

Washed our faces,
Walked the fields
Put up crosses.
Passed through
The damned mountains,
Went hellwards,
And some of us returned,
And some of us did not."
