The collapse of Chhatrapati Shivaji's statue in Sindhudurg has ignited a political firestorm in Maharashtra, a state gearing up for Assembly elections later this year. The incident has escalated tensions between the BJP and Shiv Sena (UBT), with workers from both parties clashing outside the Rajkot fort in Malvan, where the statue stood. The confrontation intensified when Union Minister Narayan Rane and opposition leader Aditya Thackeray visited the site simultaneously, leading to heated exchanges and slogan-shouting. The Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi (MVA) has condemned the statue's collapse, labeling it an affront to Shivaji, the revered founder of the Maratha kingdom. In a joint press conference, Uddhav Thackeray, Sharad Pawar, and state Congress chief Nana Patole called for widespread protests, with plans to pay homage to Shivaji's statue at the Gateway of Mumbai and launch a "Jode Maaro Andolan" against the government on Sunday. Meanwhile, the Eknath Shinde-led Mahayuti government has appealed for restraint and promised to replace the fallen statue with an even grander one. Initial investigations suggest that rust may have caused the statue, installed just eight months ago, to collapse. The statue, unveiled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Navy Day, was a 35-foot installation funded by the Maharashtra government at a cost of 2.36 crore rupees.
