  • Tourists in Barcelona received an unwelcome surprise last weekend after thousands of protesters marched through the city's popular areas, spraying people with toy water guns while shouting, "Tourists go home." Richard Florida, a professor at the University of Toronto studying how urbanism and globalization affects communities, joins CBS News to examine why and how some countries are cracking down on tourism.

    The reason for the rising high cost of living in Barcelona is because the locals that own apartments found out that they can make far more money renting their apartments on a short time rental (1 to 10 days) This took a lot of long term rental apartments off the market that the locals were renting. Due to "supply and demand", this also caused the long term rent prices to increase.

      @RAdaltonracer 15 днів тому

      @@ThereIsOnlyWar40kIt’s been very much proven that AirBNB and other similar services gut neighborhoods and cause havoc in local markets. They remove local residents from key areas where they’ve often lived for decades. Many cities around the world have called them out or even banned or heavily regulated them (like New York). Barca needs to do the same.

    • @LP-ct9nk
      @LP-ct9nk 15 днів тому +11

      Hotels are not apartments though and most people don’t even try to use them as such. Short term rentals/airbnbs only really became popular and widespread within the last 10 years, so no this aspect of tourism has not always existed.
      Short term rentals absolutely negatively affect the housing market for locals and long time residents and you can already see similar issues in the US especially in touristy states such as Florida. It’s not surprising at all something similar would be happening in Barcelona.

    • @superdog797
      @superdog797 14 днів тому

      @Prodrentjet 13 днів тому +4

      @@superdog797the logic is not the same. As said above, a hotel room is not an apartment. A hotel room is not a viable option for a local to live in full time, an apartment is however. But locals can’t rent apartments if they’re all off the market due to Airbnb in the summer months. This means less apartments available for long term rent for locals, increasing the demand, which then increases the cost.

    Housing prices increase regardless of tourism its self. In Touristy locations. Real Estate is in short supply and highly desirable. This makes them perfect investment vehicles for the super rich. What really increases cost of rent and homes is rich buying luxury condos and homes in the area. This increase the costs of housing everywhere else in that area. It’s called Gentrification. It’s funny how the “Expert” chose NYC as a good example when locals have been dealing with Gentrification for years. You can’t afford anything larger than a small walk in closet unless you make high 6 figure income. NYC good at managing Tourists? Only multi-millionaires can live in Manhattan. The poor people have to live outside of Manhattan and commute in. The US politicians have put the economic blame on migrants that allegedly came to US illegally when Billionaires own many of the EMPTY luxury condos in the shiny tall skyscrapers.

    This situation can be solved by government officials speaking to businesses about how to better support their employees (as there is a cost of living crisis), promoting vocational school attendance (as there is a skill mix match or lack of skills), getting a complete picture on the migrant situation, working with countries of origin to dampen migration, partnering with other locations that wouldn't mind accepting migrants (that have skills, and no background), or just straight up deporting migrants who cannot improve skills to be able to afford the cost of living in the area.
    Then the government needs to get a complete picture on the illegal occupation of homes. Who illegally occupies. Why? Can there be a distinct court system to handle illegal occupations? Can landlords and okupas agree on a rental agreement that is given government protection (they can stay in the home. They pay x. If they don't pay x in y days, you can get a quick eviction).
    And then finally government should look into increasing the base salary needed for all visas (student, digital nomad, non-lucrative, social arraigo-work).
    Because clearly, this isn't a tourism issue. This is a cost of living, lack of well paying jobs due to lack of skills, unchecked migration, and unchecked illegal occupation of homes issue.
    And those need to be addressed as of yesterday.
