Rare Earth was the first big-name rock concert I ever went to, in 1973, when I was in 10th grade. I saw them at a coliseum and the opening act was Parliment-Funkadelic - talk about a great first concert! Pete had an amazing voice - and to think he was drumming his heart out while holding these powerful notes. And their harmonies were just wonderful! Sadly, today, they've almost been forgotten.
I have NOT forgotten Rare Earth. Radio stations may not play too much of the old GREAT music that I grew up with, but we fans are STILL listening. Motown lives in the hearts of the fans, and STILL gets us dancing!! 💃🎶🎶🕺🎶🎶✌💕💕💕
My dad went to that CalJam music festival! I was born in the 70’s but I saw all my dads pictures in a photo album. He had some great stories about that weekend! 👍🏼
OMG I forgot about this band..........LOVED this song....Thank U for bringing it back......in these crazy days we need to b reminded that LOVE makes the world go round !!!
This performance really lifted my spirits. The message is clear, and righteous. Stop hating. Be grateful for every day of life you're given. "Well, I can't be bothered with sorrow And I can't be bothered with hate, no, no I'm using up the time but feeling fine, every day That's why I'm telling you I just want to celebrate"
ABSOLUTELY!! Great music can be SUCH a force for good in our lives. 👍 I often wish that every person on the planet would take the time to listen to whatever music makes them HAPPY. Maybe some people have not discovered truly celebratory songs like this, but we need to crank up the volume in our own neighborhoods!! 🌎❤
This is one of those almost countless wonderful and often underated rock groups from the 70s, who also did have a great fusion sound of Motown and rock. I loved driving around in my car as a teenager and turning this song up. Great example of the GREAT capacity of rock music to make your spirits soar. Anthemic.
I saw them Live at The Hollywood Bowl... Peter's Drum kit was Huge!, and his vocals were on point... Also, the studio 45 version of "Get Ready" was a huge hit in The USA, especially at the skating parties at the Rollerdrome in Pico Rivera California as a 7th grade student!!!
Oh yeah! Love this groove! Damn they're having a good time. And yeah his voice while drumming is unreal. Laying down this syncopated groove is fun! :D Thanks Fil!
He's really digging in to that fender .. Peter's phoenominal... Rare earth... Look at the clothes and hair if the 70's... Professor you would of fit in like a glove... Brotherrrrrrr
I still have a semi-afro from the 70's when I was a kid and never 'lost' it. Back in the early 90's someone was saying how 'out of style' that was...well, it appears now it's 'outta sight' once again! In fact, a stranger came up to me a few years back, he must've been in his late 20's early 30's, and said my hair was 'Epic', I was like '???" I figured that was a good thing...but I will not wear bell bottoms, still working on sideburns!
Hi Fil! Look at the clothes...70’s for sure! I do remember this group! They really were quite good! It just took me back to a fun generation! Thanks for bringing them back! ✌️
Thanks FIL for sharing this. My very first LP was Get Ready and I wore out the grooves so quickly. The more groovy and psychedelic song is In The Land Of Nod by The Sunliners. Peace to everyone.
California Jam at the long lost but not forgotten Ontario Motor Speedway. The hotel that stands on the sight has a museum for the short life of the track, and the streets have automotive related names. There is still an area of undeveloped land, and you can still see the berm made up the banking for Turn Three.
Man, everyone seems so young. I grew up listing to and learning to dance to my Mom’s favorites. She loved Benny Goodman and she and I both loved Glen Miller. So talk about a different generation, I’m talking a whole different world.
WOW!!!!👏👏👏👏👏Historic concert; I haven't listened to it for a long time ... one of older cousins had this recording, he played the drums; excellent this recording, your analysis is very good, I liked it a lot, you divided it very well, I congratulate you and thank you for the memory and pleasant moment👌👌❤❤❤👊🤘
9:09. "This isn't going to be an instructional video", as Fil proceeds to cleverly teach soul as expressed on the fretboard. And look at the crowd! The slim, happy, joyful people just celebrating and that is the sort of thing that doesn't translate well to the studio. What a show and an excellent example of the je ne sais quoi that is the groove.
Fil, great analysis. I have a little Rare Earth story, sort of. About 20 years ago, I played bass in a band with a drummer who had bought Peter Rivera's drums a few years before. I always wondered what people thought when we would arrive at a gig with these drum cases painted "Rare Earth"!
Anyone who likes this MUST GET THE LIVE CD. Their 19 minute version of GET READY is a piece of INTENSE blues rock jamming, right up there with cream, Zeppelin, Skynard, etc., With some soul thrown in too.
I was there in 1974. My girlfriend gave me the ticket for my 15th birthday. California Jam - 300 thousand fans - eight of the best bands in the world - all day . I was right in the front - center stage - behind the rear speaker tower. I was a hero when I came home with all my buddies from school.
This song brings back the happy feeling of that time. I wish could have been part of that audience, it sounds like a great concert. Another great Friday night video!
Rare Earth is very funky! There was a Motown Greatest Hits album that included this song. I didn't know their Get Ready was more popular than the Temps. You are a fount of knowledge Fil!
I saw Rare Earth in like 1983 with the Guess Who in a club in Lynwood, IL called the Pointe East. Was called a late show. Started at like 2am after they played a gig in Chicago. The sun was up when I walked out of the club. Was a great show.
Great analysis, thanks Fil. In the late 90’s I saw Peter in a casino in Lake Tahoe, Nevada with the Classic Rock All Stars. It included Spencer Davis, and the keyboard players from Sugarloaf and Iron Butterfly and they did their respective mega-hits and all signed my copy of their CD. It was wonderful.
Ah Fil, glad you finally analysed Rare Earth. Still wish you'd played Ma, an amazing track. I don't know if my suggesting them had any purchase with you but it's great you're introducing a young audience to this band. Stay safe, stay well, regards Michael
Rare Earth on the Motown label Rare Earth records. Loved these guys! This is a great performance! Liked the little change in lyrics...had my hand on a dollar bill but the manager took it away lol. I can relate. Record label and management company in my case in the 70s. Rare Earth had a distinctive vocal sound and their covers of Get Ready and I Know l'm Losing You were astounding! Such a nice string of great singles! Great analysis and guitar demo Fil! Thanks! 😎🎶🎶🎵🇨🇦
The break downs of the guitar parts you do on these videos are exceptional and I wish I’d see more players commenting. Maybe I’m missing them. Not that it’s bad for someone like me, who can hardly play. But every bit anyone can learn about music analysis by someone who is so clear with demo/explanation is a gift.
What an amazing video! Thank you so much! Rare Earth is one of my favorite bands and you did an incredible job explaining the guitar techniques. I would love to see you playing the entire song on the guitar one day. Thank you again. You are the best.
By 1980 they were already a "has-been"... saw them that summer in a divey rock bar in South Florida, USA... was impressed that the drummer was also the lead singer. Great show with them packed onto a tiny stage. Fil, thanks again for another worthy resurrection!
Certainly not a "has been " in the 80's....I saw them live in Amsterdam in the early 90's, I flew over from London as their special guest(they had used some phots of mine for the CD booklet to Differnt World) and hung out with them for over 2 hours before and after the show..."has beens"... no chance they, ROCKED and some ..They were sooooo good I went back a few years later to the same venue to see them again and suprise suprise they were brilliant then as well...As well as being a great band they were all great guys, real gents....2 nights I will never forget......

Brilliant video once again Fil! Love Rare Earth. I was wondering if you would consider doing an analysis video of Supertramp, live in 1979. The logical song is the best clip probably. No rush though, anything from you is useful and enjoyable. :)
Great review as always Fil. I bought their album back in the day. A record.😀They were better than alot of folks nay have thought. There was just so much other music too at that time.
Love the nice intimate setting! Great tune, great band. Great analysis! Was hoping you’d get to these guys and Vanilla Fudge, another band with a singing drummer.
What a great (and iconic) song from my youth. Rare Earth was one of those great jam bands. Now I’m 60 and celebrating every goddam day I have left! 🤘✌️
Thanks for analyzing Rare Earth. They were my favorite band for a couple years beginning in 1971. Looks like this is from the California Jam in 1974. Born to Wander, Big Brother and (I know I’m) Losing You are great songs too. I finally saw them live at the California State Capítol for Earth Day in 1995. But sadly Pete Rivera was no longer in the band. Still love their music!
I haven't thought about Rare Earth in quite a while. I always thought they were better than they generally got credit for. Several of my mates and I used to "dig" them in high school. Cheers!
Watching these clips of the bands that played at the C. Jam rock festival brings back so many great memories of that day and year. I was 15, high on marijuana and adrenaline.
Rare Earth, Savoy Brown, and Blue Oyster Cult was my first concert in 1973. So awesome! Change my whole taste in music 🎶. I love the Byrds, but it advanced my musical tastes 😋

Lol 😝...but at this time I was listening to zeppelin, Grand Funk, u know? The rockers! Take care Fil...I know I am an ole guy but I close my eyes and I’m back on stage playing before 20k ppl and jammin hard! Man I miss it and loved it! Thanks Fil!

I was thinking the same thing about the work a drummer is doing, playing and singing at the same time. I have a cousin who was the drummer in the Canadian band Crowbar, back in the 70's. Their most popular song was, Oh what a feeling.
God haven’t listened to these guys for such a long time Fil! They are brilliant! Plenty of groove with great dynamics! Sensational musicians having a party on stage! Epic Fil! Awesome to be back on deck....damn internet decided to go into lockdown....Bugger! Cheers Mario! 😀👌🤘
Another Detroit band I love it when you analyze music in my backyard I used to see these guys in small clubs here in Detroit if I'm not mistaken they were the only considered rock band signed to Motown records I could be wrong I can't remember good one mr. Fil
I had a Rare Earth album - Just remember the massive hit “Get Ready”, I love the song - still is in my playlist. So good that video, ‘cause I never saw the band before. Tks
I found your analysis video of Rare Earth's performance was quite interesting and informative. Incidently, you answered my question that I'd asked quite long ago--well before the internet happened: I wondered when a lead singer also played the drum set if the drumming physicality made his/her lead vocals role more challenging with regards to breath support(hope I put that correctly). Because I have asthma, it's inevitable for me not to be impressed. Fil, I thank you for answering a long unanswered question and for all that you do!
I remember my Brother introducing me to Rare earth when he came back from Vietnam! I instantly fell in love with these Guys, along with Chicago, and Isaac Hayes.
Thank you my Motown brothers. I saw Rare Earth and Grand Funk together as a kid and will never forget it.
We use to groove to Rare Earth driving to college classes! Dancing and just enjoying our youth . Thanks for some great memories.
We NEED this positive, HAPPY music now!! LOVE RARE EARTH. 💃🎶👍💕💕

Oh, the days when talent drove the music industry not just the pretty people. Great video Fil.
Right in my wheel house here Fil. These guys are awesome.
I love Rare Earth. They can take a 2:40 song and add 5 minutes or longer to it. I love when bands play extended version of songs.

Great video to appreciate what athletes these guys were! Cool guitar demonstration, too...thanks, Fil!

Yep. Rare white Motown band.
I had a bootleg 8 track that was two tracks of Rare Earth and two tracks of The Guess Who.
Wore it out.
I was shocked when I found out Rare Earth were White, never heard white people who could sound that soulful.

They were great and from my home town.. Motown!
Meat Loaf and Stoney did an album with the Motown subsidiary Rare Earth. 😎
Rare Earth, my thought on this 70 Band , One of the Worst Band for that Decade, Very Low Talent, Horrible Songs....

now your talkin!! about time we got into the best jam bands ever!!! top notch choice for analysis Fil.. great also! next = GET READY!!! 20mins!!

As my mom always said when I yelled me first...Pin a rose on your nose! 🙂
Haha congratulations! 🤘
👍 at 5:29 Fil calling this performance "Groovy" and "Funky" said it all. need I further comment?
Love Rare Earth. I’m losing you and Born to Wander were huge hits as well besides Celebrate
I had a Rare Earth album - Just remember the massive hit “Get Ready”, I love the song - still is in my playlist. So good that video, ‘cause I never saw the band before. Tks
The best drummer/lead vocalist in all of rock - bar none.
Very interesting background as far as signing with Motown..thanks Fil
Talk about memories. That was at Cal Jam 1 at Ontario Motor Speedway.
Phil I was 40 yards from the stage Ontario motor speed way and yes they rocked it.
Welcome home Fil... I was really getting worried with Julie Andrews review... Always remember: 🎸🤘Rock!!!
That's what I'm talkin' about! BTW, you were awesome demonstrating those lines!
Thanks!
Would love to see analysis of Black Oak Arkansas. They had four chart topping albums and redefined southern American rock. 🤘
It really was groovy Fil
Everyone started grooving when Rare Earth jammed...even on a Sunday afternoon.
Thanks Fil for a taste of the 70s.
