There were Vikings all over the world, because if you traveled to trade, pillaging, etc, then you're a Viking. Keep in mind that OP used the term Norsemen and not Vikings. You assumed I was talking about Vikings, which I wasn't at all, but I don't blame the assumption. The Norsemen weren't all Vikings, because most of the population were farmers and traders that stayed within their homeland and cared for their people. Majority of the population during the Viking Age WEREN'T VIKINGS. They were farmers and traders. Now were the Vikings we understand from TV Shows and some historical texts like Adam of Bremen and Tacitus' Germania seen as killers - absolutely. But were all people during the Viking Age killers and rapists - absolutely not. The Vikings aren't to be glorified, because obviously there were many atrocities they committed. But to broad stroke the Nordic/Germanic peoples during the Viking Age as rapists, and to say that I was glorifying them, is extraordinarily off base.

Hey, loved it. I really like that that you decided to include the Baltic areas aswell and mention Saaremaa's burials. It really gets buried and people don't really think of Estonians as vikings. New findings actually have given us more viking age treausres from Läänemaa (western coast of Estonia just to the east of Saaremaa) than from Saaremaa. The cultural mix is so insane for that time, even more than nowadays. Archeologists also point out that they cannot differenciate between Scandinavian findings and stuff from Saaremaa.

@@erikeriksson3615 Thanks, although I have to admit that talking about "Polish culture" (or anything) back in the bronze age is a bit of anachronism. But yeah, the people living around the Baltic certainly had contacts with one another for a long time. I was expecting Jomsborg to be mentioned but unlike nearly any other element of this video, I didn't expect that much about the first two rulers of Poland and their Nordic connections.
@@Artur_M. Thanks for interesting reply. Why I was mentioned bronze age is that bin the Swedish province of Ostrogothe lots of women's are in graves probably married to local gothic mens. They women's are Slavic because they have with them special pottery and things that is only from polish areas. They Swedish Gothic tribe and Polen have in the iron age before christ also big connection and also migration we can se in graves the Wielbark culture and in Ostrogothi and westgothi in Sweden we see in graves from warriors connection with Polend. My family still has connections to our farm in the "Land of Warriors" Hadland Norway. Which is just north of Oslo. (My mother's cousin went there during WWII on a mission for the OSS, and met & married another cousin, and stayed. So we still go back to the family farm.) I can see where the strength comes from they had a harsh, sharsh existence during the cold ice age. So, after the lands warmed the population boomed. These subsistence farmers just survived during most of the year, they lived in a dark winter -- living off stored food, stored fats, and fasting. They had a couple months in the summer to make everything. It makes a person tough.
38:54 Olaf had already forgotten. Imagine, when he went back to his home...What happened?? - Uhm...Nothing. Finland aka Finnmark aka Kvenland was not depopulated, it was hidden land (populated after ice age, ~9000 - 8500BC) with secret villages and surprises. Early Vikings were friends, they used inland waterways and also traded goods before currency. :)
This is an absolutely outstanding video. Many of my sources that I used to create my fictional world of Midgard in my works of high fantasy, are drawn from the same sources that you use. Keep it up. Maybe you would consider doing a video exclusively about the Volkrvandrung
@39:50 "If you can't beat them, join them." - Who exactly couldn't beat whom, and who joined whom? As far as I know, the largest amount (was it per area or per population, I cannot recall) of the _genuine_ Ulfberht swords have been excavated in Finland. Did Finns (also) forge these blades, or were they all captured from the vikings? I hoped for at least a tad bit more explanation regarding the Finn/viking relationship/interaction. I know the vikings raided, or at least tried to raid the Finns for their fur. Yet, the Finns have practically no Scandinavian DNA in their blood. Genetically, the modern-day Swedes and Italians are closer to each other than Finns of the western and eastern part of Finland.
Oh nice can't wait to see that one . Great channel by the way it is amazing listening to what all these ancient people have achieved and failed at . Makes you think in a thousand years what will people say about us.

Yes! Definitely. What eras would you like to see covered?
@@HistoryTime a tour of the crusader states at their height maybe?
@@theblackprince1346 Definitely in the works. 1130s potentially.
Just began listening. It’s wonderfully written
I've made my first comment before the best part of the video: the exploration of the Scandinavian-Polish connections. Best video ever! 😁
Exactly 👍the jomvikings at Wollin. A mix of Swedish and polish culture witch goes back all the way to the bronze age.

Thank u so much for your time in presenting this intriguing Era of history
My family still has connections to our farm in the "Land of Warriors" Hadland Norway. Which is just north of Oslo. (My mother's cousin went there during WWII on a mission for the OSS, and met & married another cousin, and stayed. So we still go back to the family farm.) I can see where the strength comes from they had a harsh, sharsh existence during the cold ice age. So, after the lands warmed the population boomed. These subsistence farmers just survived during most of the year, they lived in a dark winter -- living off stored food, stored fats, and fasting. They had a couple months in the summer to make everything. It makes a person tough.
this is how survivors are forged! :) amazing
How about a tour of asia 1000 ad or north/south america or Australia 1000 ad NOICE MATE
Great job Pete, as always.
MrZetor - Very Interesting !
Really excellent detail of a confusing, but fascinating period of history. Thank you ...

The "e" at the end of Nordic words are almost *never* silent.
That said, lovely video. =)
Thanks for watching!
Same as modern German.
I have heavy scandinavian ancestory, so to me, this is amazing. Nice know Grandpa had fun on his summer holiday to England.
Excellent work my friend, thankyou for all you share, best wishes ;-)
Huge swaths of adventure. And as you mentioned, many, many unrecorded stories. The possibilities are endless.
Great video. A tour of holy Roman empire would be nice.
Nice idea. I have something in the works similar to this video but Germany and mainland Europe in the year 1000.
Oh nice can't wait to see that one . Great channel by the way it is amazing listening to what all these ancient people have achieved and failed at . Makes you think in a thousand years what will people say about us.
This was really well done. 12 out out 10 from here - and then some.
ABSOLUTELY love it! Great job and please keep it up. :D
I would appreciate English captions. I miss crucial words sometimes, despite playback, due to your exotic accent. Still my favourite channel. Cheers !
So awesome journey into the late Viking Age!
The best kind of journey !
First video I've seen..excellent! Liked and subbed from Newfoundland! Great job!
Terrific documentary. Thanks!
Thanks for watching
Thank you for your hard work. You are best narrator I've heard.
