Exploring the Disused Railway Tunnel at Argos Hill in East Sussex

- Today I meet up with Dumpman, aka Chris Bedford, to seek out Argos Hill Tunnel, part of the original Cuckoo Line. The tunnel is now disused and abandoned. Join us as we scrabble down the banks of the cutting to reach this piece of industrial heritage.
Today, the Cuckoo Line remains a closed railway - a footpath and cycleway known as The Cuckoo Trail runs along much of the route from Polegate to Heathfield.

It looked like a good trail had been beaten down to it that I'm surprised it hasn't been made into part of a walking trail. I'd love to come across an old tunnel like that on a walk!

I would suggest that the recesses are more for strengthening than anything to bolster the walls for when the top-fill was put back in above.

i think the recesses are a part of strengthening and of course reduces the need for more bricks assuming the walls are as thick as the wider sections between the arches .

I seem to remember hearing it was standard at the time to build the bridges and tunnels dual gauge even though it only carried single track

I went there years ago looking for filming locations for The Prisoner. We never found it of course as the actual tunnel used is now under the Mayfield by-pass a little to the south.
Prisoner nerdy trivia: if you look carefully at the scene where the truck emerges from the tunnel you can clearly see one of the film crews on the embankment.

I love a good tunnel - it’s a shame it hasn’t been repurposed as part of the Cuckoo trail; I assume the land owner wouldn’t let that happen?
(It’s been done before - much of the old railway between Plympton and Tiverton (the GWR line) is a bridle way and there’s a tunnel (with lights) that you can cycle through!

I believe the Cuckoo trail only extends as far north as Heathfield, Argos Hill is further north

I believe the Cuckoo line was single gauge
Richard I found a interesting video on here in which a train journey from Tonbridge to Polegate is filmed and it the narrator comments on how even though the line was single gauge and bridges and tunnels had to be built to dual gauge, don’t quite know why, would be interesting to see you visit Polegate and the site of the Cuckoo line junction
Surely there must be someone out there who can explain why so many arches were added under that tunnel.

ORLA S a lot of the towns served by the Cuckoo line are now far bigger than in Beeching’s day, it’s hard to see how a town the size is that Hailsham is now doesn’t have a station.
Wrong !! He was actually used as purely a puppet …it was not his personal view . Look it up !!!
