    The single most overly complicated, ridiculously engineered and costly to produce design for a task that can be replicated with a $2 rusty knife. Great job on the restoration. I always love the outro with your wife's demonstration of the item and explanation. Great Channel! Shalom from Israel.

      The first inactive tetanus toxoid was discovered and produced in 1924. This vaccine proved successful when it was used to prevent tetanus in the military during World War II, but this sharpener was invented in 1828, so there was no vaccine, so : why use a rusty knife⁉️

      There are times when you want a really fine point on your pencil. A pencil sharpener does it better than a knife.

    • @rwagjr
      @rwagjr 2 роки тому +1

      @@Marcelo-56 I wasn't suggesting to use a rusty knife, nor was I questioning the beauty of the design or the resultant function. I'm amazed at the hours spent to engineer the product, produce special tools to make the dozens of intricate parts, the labor to assemble it all, and then Market a device which one could replicate the result by nailing a blade onto a piece of wood with a hole drilled in it! My comment was meant to question the design, production and sale of the item. I can't imagine the effort was worth the final product.

      @@rwagjr Which is why I said that sometimes a pencil sharpener is what you need, since it does a better job than a knife does in getting a sharp point.
      I take it that you don't do drawings, either artistic or engineering drawings.
      I once saw on a UA-cam channel, I don't believe it was Verdona, someone restoring a machine to peel apples. The machine seemed unnecessarily complicated, although it did do a better and considerably faster job than just a knife or a hand peeler. Then I thought, "If this is a bakery, and I have to peel a couple of dozen apples, this machine makes a lot of sense.

It's always a pleasure to see Veronika give a description of how the restoration works. She is definitely a beautiful addition to your videos. Please tell her that I miss her tasty recipes. My great grandpa always carried a pencil sharpener in a pants pocket. He called it his jackknife of all trades. He kept the blades sharp and they never failed him. It was buried with him.
    He would be proud of your efforts here.

    I found another Studium 717 online which had an image of it opened up,I had to blow it up to see but you are missing a part,the blade itself,it looks like a 6 blade boat propeller and goes on the shaft at 16:51.
    I did quite a bit of searching but I had no luck on finding a replacement.

Thanks again for the time you spend for us in your restorations and sharing I appreciate very much . I’m really admiring the people who designed these objects the hours and hours of designing where every single piece is studied is one of the first things I see when I look at an object and in some way the restorations you do is their to pay tribute therefore bravo and thank you .

    The first school sharpeners I remember (late 40's) were twin milling cylinders, hand-cranked. At home, Dad with his handy pen knife put a point rivaling the mechanical on our Eberhard Fabers or Dicksons

    That was brilliant Radek, I enjoyed it all. My father was an artist and I've got lots of his pictures and drawings, he seemed to spend hours, when I watched him as a child, sharpening his pencils. When he died I went through his art equipment and took everything I wanted, my brother had all his technical drawing equipment. I still have loads of his stuff, as I write this his stapler machine is on my desk next to my computer keyboard. It was also lovely to see Veronica at the end of your video; I hope you manage to find the part that is missing and make it work. You have surprised me today and reminded me of my father! He died in 1983 when I was 28. Ahoj my good friends Radek and Veronica, from Nick.

    Nice work! When I need to sharpen a carpenter's pencil, I use a coarse wood file. When I use a pencil it can sometimes take too much wood off at a time. A file makes nice symmetrical cuts, easily exposing the right amount of graphite.

    @mrimmortal1579 2 роки тому

    A very nicely done restoration. The sharpener turned out beautifully!
    One thing that could possibly be a concern though: the inside of a pencil sharpener is a dirty and dusty place. Using grease on the meshing gears and moving parts could wind up causing problems, as the grease will attract the dust and debris, causing it to form a thick paste that will cause sticking and binding, and eventually may cause grinding and premature wear. I would consider using powdered graphite to lubricate the moving parts, as it will resist drawing in contaminants and clumping. Also, graphite powder is produced when sharpening a pencil, so it shouldn’t need lubricated very often!
