  • Grab a coffee, it's a long one!! I'm aiming to create a shorter, more focused review soon, but in this video, I've hopefully covered every aspect of the watch, including the amazing lume, and 8.5mm thickness of this incredible watch from Patek Philippe.
    In the review, I also talk about the buying process I went through, and my thoughts on the key rivals of the watch, including the Nautilus 5711 from the same stable.

    The first time I saw this watch, I thought it was absolute rubbish. It looks like a Timex you'd get at Sears. Now, if I had the cash, I'd buy one in an heartbeat. That's the magic of Patek Phillipe, stealth luxury.

      +Shafir Iqbal You're missing the point. What do you mean by accurate? If you want the most accuracy, buy a quartz watch for £10.

      same here.
      I every tried it one two years ago

      two years later now
      it's just a gem to me

      really can't describe how come a three hand watch could surprise you

    The aquanaut really is a watch that needs to be seen and worn in person to actually understand its beauty. As soon as i saw one in person, i wanted one, and thankfully will be getting one in around 6 weeks time.

      Shafir Iqbal yes.I've just putted it on sale this week.I bought a 5711 a few months ago and now I'm selling the Aquanaut to buy a 5712g.If you are interested I'm selling it 16900€,great conditions,no dings,no scratches.

      Ghujvan'Dumènicu Ghjuvan'Dumènicu im not ready to buy ive just started saving... i dont want to sell any of my rolexs for a new watch so im saving out right.
      Wooow im impressed- how long did you have to wait to get the 5711? Really wanted it but ive now changed mind and want the aquanaut.
      Im a bit confused if you loved the watch 'soooooo much' why sell it?

    • @JeanDo
      @JeanDo 7 років тому +2

      Shafir Iqbal my 5711 is not a new one,it's a 2008 "poinçon de Genève" model with the screwed bracelet.It was really in great condition so I bought it.
      Well...I really love the aquanaut but I also really want to get the 5712g in white gold,as it is really expensive and I don't want to have 2 black/grey dial watches,the aquanaut must go...before I got the 5711,I had a white gold Daytona 116519.I sold it to pay the 5711 and keep the aquanaut.
      But I really miss the weight and the hot color of the white gold...It feels really nice,I don't know how to explain it.
      I really want to buy a 5712g as soon as can.
      I understand you want to keep your watches...personally I never had more than 3 watches at the same times but sometimes I miss some pièces I sold...Maybe Sould I have more patience like you do.

      Ghujvan'Dumènicu Ghjuvan'Dumènicu Nice choice on the 5711... well brother this will be my final watch purchase (making a total of 3)... then im done. Need money for family etc after that. But your really making me want the aquanaut via your description of it.. Thank you for taking the time out to respond. Just love the watch game... people are amazing and watches are amazing.

    This was the best review I have ever seen on the Aquanaut..I try telling my watch "collector" friends what it's like and they form opinions becasue they never tried a patek on and have no clue. UNTIL you see it .. NOTHING is like it. I just don't like the bracelet either or the gold model i seen both in person...This is my favorite by far. I find it interesting how you compared it to a Royal Oak I feel the same way great bracelet but it misses on fit and finish in comparison and their movement is trouble. They are redoing the RO in a year or 2 with a totally new movement...I just hope the fit and finish are pushed up a notch as well for their price point.

    • @WatchHobbyist
      @WatchHobbyist  8 років тому

      +pennfootball71 Thanks 😊 Not sure if you've seen the new AP RO Power Reserve but I think the "Up/Down" and fonts are very poorly executed compared to the previous version. If that's a hint at the next AP, I'll be steering clear.

    • @pennfootball71
      @pennfootball71 8 років тому

      Watch Hobbyist The new movements are not out yet...It will be another year or 2. The fit and finish of the case and gold screws is always all over the place though...It is weird I never saw 2 a like. The Royal Oak Offshore is also all over the place. I mean for Patek Money you should get at least consistency.

    I fell in love with the aquanaut since it first appeared, being a lot more robust looking in the early model 5165 ( ant this, i love) I would love to have both the 5167a AND the 5165 original aquanaut. I find the 5165 a lot more sport and diver looking, and the 5167 a lot more refined. And now everybody is going nuts about the blue 5168 in white gold, which i find absolutely amazing, but its a different beast. Call me romantic and old fashioned but if i had to choose id go for the original 5165 as a keeper, since its the original and also, i believe, as sport and robust as patek will ever get. Loved your video and review.

    I didn't think that anyone could love this watch more than me. It's the perfect, do anything, go anywhere watch imo. Best of all, it's a Patek which is thin, sporty and elegant all in one. I've owned every Rolex there is and sold them all b/c of the thickness, flashyness and overall in your face look that only Rolex can deliver. This is the stealth wealth, luxury piece that needs not to be flashy or impress anyone except the owner. I will take this over a Sub or Daytona C anyday of the week and it is a keeper forever. To the haters, I would suggest trying one on b/c saying the 5711 is better. I agree the 5711 is also a great piece, but the tropical strap and the dial on the 5167 is something to behold in person rather than a bunch of poor photos....

    I made a huge mistake of selling this last year. I'm literally trading in a few items to get it again. I will never sell again.
    I'm buying the bracelet this time too and of course the band. I still have the green and brown.
    The biggest thing about it, was the weight. Soooooo light weight.

    What a beautiful timepiece! Thank you for taking the time to walk us through a detailed look at the watch. I appreciated every minute of the review. In your opinion, do you know if this is suited for smaller wrists? - I have a 5.75" wrist. You are also the first reviewer I have seen who has explained how to size the Aquanaut - this was very insightful!

    • @WatchHobbyist
      @WatchHobbyist  8 років тому

      Thanks Nick. I actually think it would fit fine. If there is an issue it would be with the way the strap meets the lugs, as with fixed straps like this, they can sometimes sit oddly. However you could always fit a leather or Nato strap to avoid this, but I doubt you would need to really. Glad it helped :-)

In future reviews, I suggest seeing a time lapse clip on the date roll over and hear the sounds of the rotor.

The rubber strap looks nice, and would be the one I'd gravitate to over the bracelet, but, ughh, it would scare me to cut my rubber strap during the sizing process! Great review! I agree with eco8gator - only people who don't own it and never even held it in their hands say stupid things about the Aquanaut. For me ist has been the exit watch for more than five years and most of the time my daily rocker and it was not the first PP I owned. What amazes me is the light weight of the whole composition of strap and watch that makes you forget about wearing a watch most of the time - all the details you showed in the video are amazing but at the end of the day I forget about them. Go on with those reviews...

    Great review; I subscribed . It's funny, those who say ignorant things about this watch are typically those don't own the watch... The bezel on this watch attracts scratches but scratches won't cause a watch to leak. On an older version I have found...I have found it to be ever bit as durable as other Swiss options. Regarding the hacking...it doesn't matter I find the watch to be very close to where it was first set after over a week of wrist time.

    This is the Jumbo i believe. If so i very nearly pulled the trigger on one last xmas. It's a beautiful looking piece which feels great on the wrist. The reason i walked away is because it isn't really a sports watch. It's far too delicate to be considered as such. Beautiful piece all the same.

    • @WatchHobbyist
      @WatchHobbyist  8 років тому

      Hi Stephen, that's the correct model, but this is no delicate watch. If you've seen my review of the vintage Daytona, that's the definition of delicate. I was terrified of wearing it and damaging it. The 5167 so far has felt incredibly robust; easily as wearable as any Rolex etc. I don't foresee any issues at all, but I have a watch that's super thin and lightweight.

    What I don't like about it is the date wheel. It should be black with white numbers. At this price point date wheels should not be a simple white which clashes with the dial.

    • @WatchHobbyist
      @WatchHobbyist  8 років тому +2

      I didn't like it previously, but now I have the watch, I find the date wheel is incredible easy to read. Manufacturers never fully match the date colour to the dial, unless everything is black, so I personally hate that even more.

    • @ItsTimePictures
      @ItsTimePictures 8 років тому

      +Watch Hobbyist I hear what you're saying, but for this watch and with that dial I think they could easily have matched it. Unmatched date wheels and dials are a huge pet peeve of mine.

    • @WatchHobbyist
      @WatchHobbyist  8 років тому +1

      The thing I've realised is that non-complicated PPs are about function as much as form. This is THE best watch I've had. Reading the time and date is what a watch is about, and there's never been an easier watch to read in my watch box. You're entitled to your opinion, but sometimes, little details stop people buying something; little details that are exaggerated on huge computer screens and really don't mean a lot, if anything in reality.

    • @ItsTimePictures
      @ItsTimePictures 8 років тому

      +Watch Hobbyist you are certainly entitled to your opinion as well. Great review, by the way. I don't know if I will ever go for a PP. I would rather sink that money into those money pits known as cars ;) However with age comes maturity and with maturity comes more refined tastes, so perhaps The future will hold surprises.

    Great piece indeed and review, but as you mentioned when you spend this kind of money you would expect more, in my case a hacking feature. And you can get this in a smaller thickness. My JLC ultra this which is less than 8mm has this feature. I hope the new Nautilus introductions later this year will include these features.

      +Ryan Jones-McCarthy Thing is, I don't really go for the full on dress watch thing right now, so something like this more than suits my needs. I am considering a calatrava though as I'm now a bit hooked on the quality of this brand 😬😬😬

      Aaaah. See i believe in a strong balance. I wear a two tone TAG Aquaracer as my everyday beater. And a lot of people might say that TAGs are quite quaint these days due to the whole seiko movement issue, however i find it good as a everyday watch. But i have many omega geneve dress watches aswell. A patek dress watch is a big dream for me haha.

    Amazing review. The best I've seen by far. I'm thinking about getting my first PP and the 5167A. It's nice to know that the fold-over clasp is comfortable, as well as the strap. I wore many fold-over/deployant clasps that were quite uncomfortable (sharp edges, odd shaped, etc.). How does the 5167A fit a thin 6.5 to 6.75" wrist in terms of looks and comfortability?

    • @WatchHobbyist

    I find rotor noise really irritating. I think on a Patek it would put me off the watch entirely. My dad has the geophysics JLC and that thing makes more noise than a late 90s PC fan. Even my Hublot Unico movement makes less noise and I can hear the watch beat from a metre away. I do like this but I'll definitely have to put one on now to see. zero adjustment on the strap is also a nono for me, my wrist size changes quite significantly.
    BTW which watches did you have that were running 12 seconds off a day? Not even my ten year Tag ran that badly.

    • @WatchHobbyist
      @WatchHobbyist  7 років тому

      +V Cccc my AP ran at 12 secs and was under two years old. The rotor noise on a valjoux isn’t nice, but the noise on the Aquanaut is great. You need it or you forget you’re wearing a watch. The strap is no issue for me. It’s flexible and extremely comfortable. I’ve worn it outdoors on a cold day, then a few hours later in a hot, sweaty environment and it’s been ideal. No need to flip clasps etc etc

    I don't get it. If it had any other name on it, no one would look twice. I had one on at the dealer and thought it wore very small and the bezel literally screams, scratch me. For the same scratchability, I'd go for a Royal Oak.

    • @WatchHobbyist
      @WatchHobbyist  7 років тому +1

      I think you need to own one for at least a week to understand this watch. The detail is greater than any RO I've owned and the thin case wears incredibly well. In the time I owned it, and wore it for a few months, I did not scratch the bezel.

    +Watch Hobbyist... Really interested in buying this watch, absolutely love the look, but I have one question about the strap; does the clasp allow small incremental adjustments or do you cut it exactly to size and that's it? Since this is one of those "lifetime" long watches, I'm concerned if I lose/gain weight, do I need to buy a new strap? Also, just curious, do you still own this Aquanaut? Thanks for your help!

    • @WatchHobbyist
