Picking up a loaded 2023 this weekend so have been consuming hours of reviews to get familiar with the bike. Rory gave a lot of insight others never covered - He's awesome!
Awesome Rory!!!! So cool that you into bikes too. Really nicely made reviews of both cars and bikes. So glad I subscribed to your channel. Keep up the good work bruv. I also would like to say I think AutoTrader is one of the best motoring channels on UA-cam
Good review thanks. My sport version came with a smaller sport windshield, which strangely seems better than the standard. Or a MRA Vario windshield only takes 10 minutes to fit, for those colder days or longer tours. Watch out for the paintwork. I had to fit a tank decal/graphic to avoid zip scratch. Generally it’s a very interesting bike to ride and it can take it’s own weight in load i.e. 216kg. Nice and slim its a good looking bike imho.
2:49 There is a known factory defect in the clutch of the F900R and F900XR, BMW has a TSARA case on it and should replace it under warranty if you are experiencing this issue from a start.
He describes the exact clutch issue at the timestamp in my original comment: when pulling away from a stop, the clutch will catch all at once, rather than engaging progressively. There is no amount of lever finesse that can overcome this on the affected bikes, it tends to get worse over time, is particularly bad when completely cold, and it doesn't have anything to do with cable adjustment, it's a problem with the internal mechanism. The problem is demonstrated in other videos, including the long term review from DriveMag Riders.
@@PMitchell106 geez...that sounds annoying and a serious turn off for me...I'm riding a yamaha tmax 530 for now....and jumping to a bmw 950 with clutch issues seems intimidating....I think I am going to go with the new 2021 yamaha tracer 9gt...in red. I think the yamaha is put together for a more satisfying experience.........what do you think of that new 2021 tracer 9gt?
@@foolishcoyote.The clutch issue is important to be aware of, but I wouldn't let it be a major factor in your decision; not all are affected, and those that are affected are fully covered on the 3-year 36,000 mile warranty. The fix is basically to swap the clutch assembly with a replacement for the 850GS, which has all the same features, but is a different design, possibly made by a different supplier. Those who have had the swap done under warranty report no issues after having it done. I haven't ridden the Tracer, but I rode the XSR900 back to back with the F900R and immediately knew I wanted the BMW over the Yamaha platform. All of the controls are more precise (even the clutch, when functioning properly), the suspension is both more confortable and better performing, the brakes are substantially better front and rear, the electronics package from BMW is well-developed, and the TFT is the best in the business. The BMW is hands down the easier bike to ride, mostly because of the jumpy throttle of the Yamaha 900's. Yamaha has made some improvements on this, but still hadn't quite worked it out as of their 2020 models. I'm sure the snatchy throttle is something you quickly learn to live with, but it was enough to make the experience feel compromised and budget when comparing back to back. The Yamahas are lighter, more powerful, and usually more affordable. I have not ridden the 2021 Euro5 update of the Yamahas, which is said to improve on all of the things I found lacking in the 2020 models, including the addition of R1-derived rider aides. If you are looking at a BMW with all of the options, the price difference becomes notable. Another thing worth considering is that there are a lot more Yamahas on the road, so if having a large community of support for the bike is important to you, the Yamahas are going to be a lot better in that regard. The Tracer has lower official payload rating than the XR, which may be worth noting if you want to do any touring with luggage. One nice thing with BMW is that their dealers will let you test ride any time. With Yamaha, you have to wait for one of their demo events to come around, and those have a somewhat awkward group-ride format. Another option is to see if you can find one to rent for a day on Twisted Road to see how you like it before you buy one, but there probably won't be any 2021's on there for a while. Good luck with your decision!
I have NC750X 2023 model, rode over 13k last year...mostly Prague and some trips and I have to say, that the storage is awesome with Honda bigger top case, it’s like a two wheel truck. DCT or paddles is awesome too in the city. BUT, the power is not there. It’s not bad, it’s ok for “normal” riding. It’s ok or fine or how to say it, but it doesn’t make you smiling like a kid.
Your bike is fully loaded. Everything you mentioned is optional. Your sat nav is unnecessary because it has turn by turn on the dash - accessed by your phone.
I like the electronic dashboard and the Sat Navigation of the BMW F900. Rory you are a piston head, you know how to drive cars and bikes. Try that Mat Lawson, Doug De Muro and Jeremy Clarkson.
If you are a new rider then you should be on something less powerful. Plenty of modern day 300's that make the bikes I learned on back in the early eighties seem like child's play. Give yourself a chance at having a long riding career and surviving your inevitable mistakes as a new rider and start with something small. Take a recommended or well known road riding and handling course as well. Nuff said.
Get a tracker, alarm and garage and where you work secure parking with cameras and you should be ok. Leave the heavy duty chain at work so you don't have to carry it. Also don't be afraid to hurt someone who tries steal your bike 😊
good review, nice to see not on top gear, lol, loved this bike found the same with screen, S1000XR screen is better, 900 is on my shopping list for this year, good value for money i think.
can it lower the suspension to keep the seat to foot height yet touch the ground ? like to have a comfy seat for more leg room but then.. a long way to ground level; 180 cm/ 6' tall
So im guessing at 6.11" this one gonna shake my head like a miele washing machin at 1600rpm at autobahn, or do they have after market higher windscreen?
I would choose something in the 300-400cc category. The BMW G 310 series are good beginner bikes, but they are not too reliable (from my experience). The KTM 390s are good as well as the Husqvarna Vitpilen or Svartpilen are both good choices.
Forgot to mention a lot of the features aren’t standard, including keyless ride, emergency call, hand guards, electronic suspension, etc. Plus the Nav 6 is utter crap and yet BMW charges over £500 for it 🤣
I commuted by motorcycle in Chicago for 10 years. Proper tires, use your head, you'll be fine. And the looks you get in sub-zero temps made it worth it!
Yes that would be nice. In the throttle house vid it took of faster than the vw golf but the Mazda 3 turbo does not sound good....not good enough to scare neighbors when comparing it apples to apples.

If the seat is 895 you wouldn't be able to touch the "floor" pretty easily. 825mm is the standard seat height.
Exactly. I rode it and the standard one is at 825 mm. :) Drop by when have time.
SEAT different in each country. 795 in asia; then you buy a comfort seat to add 50mm. then you can't touch the ground ; if 6'; 180 cm tall
