With the bandanna or a paper filter it’s your coffee pot now. I like the idea of a steamer someone else had…Turn it sideways with the round part down and then put the pot on could also use an alcohol stove possibly? Or twigs ? The fun is in trying new things. The best mess kit comes with a cook. Have fun stay safe.
Steam vegetables, add four bolts down through the holes to lift the pot holding the water up. Uses the whole of the stove. Pasta strainer etc. thanks for sharing. Maybe drill the holes larger
I really like the bolt idea, maybe the best one yet? I tell you what, I live in a small town that is fortunate enough to still have a hardware store. I am in there at least once a week and you Sir, have given me a reason to go this week. Thank you
I would cut out some larger holes on the concave side, then a window on the convex side, which would give you much better air flow. With the window, you could flip it right side up, place a couple tent pegs across the top, and use it as a wood burning stove. You'd still be able to use it upside down with solid fuels or alcohol stoves.
You are supposed to drop the fire gel out of the plastic before lighting. I noticed they were bcb fire dragon, The plastic will hinder the flame I think.
@carlsherman4655 I have only recently discovered the world of alcohol Stoves. I believed!.... however I left mine in my wife's car this week and had to improvise. Thanks for watching anyway!
I use the Swiss M40 with the Dutch stainless-steel cook tin for a one two punch. Inside the M40 I have a GI canteen cup, lid and Trangia type stove. The M40 for boiling water and stews, the Dutch cook tin (small one) for frying and general cooking and the canteen cup for drinking. Heavy but to me worth the weight.
Excellent! There is a small family owed aluminum foundry down the road from me and I really want to run a couple ideas past them. Thank you for watching and have a great day
What a great idea, love it. I am in the process of making my Romanian mess tin into a survival kit. I use a Polish one for cooking, I keep my stove and fire lighting kit inside. I personally think these types of mess tin are a great versatile piece of kit to have.
I use this one quite a bit, it just works and I like being able to store things inside. I wish somebody would make a canteen that fit snugly inside. Thank you very much
@@OliveDrabAlliance I have a Yugoslavian mess kit which is great, as it has a canteen that fits in side. Unfortunately only one part of it is metal, the rest is plastic.
@barryrice4957 I have the same one. I did a video on it a while back. I think with age the plastic became brittle and breakage was an issue. It's a good design, but maybe not the best materials we're used?
So I love the strainer/stove idea. I would take the strainer and set the bottom on a hard surface and choose 4 holes (1 in each corner of the pattern) and use a drift punch to cause 4 of them to be raised so that the pot stands just off the holes a little. I've seen several of the stoves used for the Kidney shaped USGI canteen cup and they have 4 perimeter holes that you can tell are beveled outward. And while at it, I'd probably recommend drilling holes all the way around the rim where you already drilled a few holes. If you still need more oxygen at that point, maybe take a cutoff wheel on a dremel style tool and connect 2 neighboring holes on the rim to make more slots so to speak. Best of luck making it work, I am super confident it will work. Thank you for your content, it helps me more than I can express when I can't get out. Have an awesome weekend brother.
You have a good one too. Yeah, I think that would work, it just needs more air. I think more holes and maybe use a larger bit for those top holes. Thank you
Consider using some screen wire to improve it as a sieve. If you are a coffee drinker then the screen wire would act like a reusable coffee filter. I probably wouldn't use it as a heater due to the melting point of aluminum. Look to the Mountain Man kit of old. Anything that delt with fire was iron or tin. Takes a lot of high heat to melt it. Have fun experimenting. Cheers!
Good Evening ! I pack all kinds of stuff & MIX AND MATCH. I definitely think you're on to a great idea, perhaps more & larger holes around the strainer, stove. TAKE CARE..
Right on. Adapt and survive is one of the mantras I learned in the military. A little bit of this and a little bit of that is the key! Thank you and keep doing what you do!
You could cut a square hole in the side of the “strainer” to make a twig stove. Maybe put some square metal bars on the top of the strainer then put the pot on top of the bars so it’ll allow more oxygen flow.
Its the German M31 , glad the chinese are making them , good piecs of kit .The soviet mess kit is the same , but a bit smaller . I think I will keep the other container as is , too much good foraging in Maine . If you havnt tried the Soviet VDV mess kit , you will love it . Built in canteen all in one .
I have seen the Soviet Airborne kit but don't have one. Right now, as I type this, my Soviet version of this one is on my coffee table in front of me. It just so happens that today, August 10th is the 40th anniversary of the movie "Red Dawn". I'm going to watch the movie and eat popcorn from my Soviet mess kit. Thank you
@@OliveDrabAlliance I did some research awile ago . The M31 style , in its original form , goes all the way back to the Napolionic era . Thats how long Europeans have been using that design , in one form or another . I think it was originally French . Not sure on that . Everybody else copied it .
Perhaps: install a LOT of plugs (ie., small pieces of rubber or ear plugs) to give the water more resonance time through the filter media. Maybe only one or two exposed holes. Then, use a higher BTU value fuel.
Using the part as a stove is perfect, as other "cook sets" provide some kind of canister stove top in its own carrying case. I appreciate your engineering and look forward to how you improve this mess kit, as an artist the only thing I could provide would be an image or pinstriping, lol
My brother...... my brother my brother..... I 100% agree. I engraved one of these and gave it to a fan, but I have a way better idea involving high temp engine enamel. Great minds think alike. Thank you so much!
Hi John good video sir I have the same mess hit I got when I was in the army in Germany so. If you drill bigger holes about half way up on the side it will breath better an will heat up better
This is a copy of the Bundeswehr mess kit. The inside cup hooks into the handle of the lid so you can keep the mains and dessert separate. It negates the problem we had in the Dutch and UK armed forces with two separate messtins we had to keep upright. In the NVA (East German Army) they had it separate with it's own handle. I usually just leave it at home and use the main pot and lid for cooking. But mine is a BW surplus version not the Chinese knock-off. The cup in mine doesn't hang backwards like yours did when hooked on. I use them both during a BBQ hooked together. When you use it like a stove you can make a metal stand to put them on. I don't know what the English translation is but i have used montageband, a roll of metal sheet with perforations, in the past to raise metal stands. Just saw a small slit into one side of the hole. Some even have two small holes alternated with one bigger.
Thank you for the excellent information. I really appreciate it. Especially how the East and West German kits are different. I hope you have an excellent day
seems like a variation of the 'West German' mess kit. Ironically I preferred the East German mess kit - similar design but it had a handle on the inner 'pot'.

1 inch holes on the sides. I got a pathfinder pfm40 one of them. Works good.

The slit on the rim is for attaching the handle on the other pot to make it a double container
