- One game we've been meaning to review on Bullet Heaven is CAVE's Ketsui: Kizuna Jigoku Tachi. This is evidenced from the three copies of the game we have somehow obtained. And yet, years later, nothing. Well, that's all changing, now that it's available in North America on the PSN store. So what do we think of this game? Is there a reason we have three different versions? Let's take a closer look.

Paying the 65 plus for this one was easily one of the best physical game purchases I've made in recent years. This game keeps on giving. It is reasonably accessible but also super challenging. Most importantly, it just plays and controls like a dream.
Can't disagree with anything you're saying here. All it's missing is the X-Mode and Death Label would have been neat for an extra little unlockable nugget, or if it were to be reworked into HD. Alas.
Excellent review! I’ve wanted this game localized for the longest time, even though I shelled out $60 for the Japanese version last year. I didn’t think you were going to mention the lack of an English patch for that version (which would’ve made it perfect, in my opinion), but I found myself pleasantly surprised. I love your content, and recently turned my goddaughter onto your channel as well. Funny story regarding her: As a lil lass, she’d always ask me to play the “airplane” game on my hacked vita. Cut to fall 2020: She’s a college freshman flying planes while studying to become a pilot. The “airplane” game - Giga Wing😄
I plan to surprise her with one of my DC’s and both games for Christmas!

That's awesome. Hopefully she does well in her pursuit of the wild blue yonder. I once wanted to be a fighter pilot, but things didn't pan out especially well, particularly from being too tall to fly fighters. Things fell to the wayside and I became an artist, not a soldier.
Dreamcast hold a special place in my heart as well. I'm still strivingto complete the Dreamcast shmups compendium as soon as I can
Ketsui Death Label for the Nintendo DS was my first foray into Cave games, and bullet hell shooters in general. I was obsessed with it and played it all the time in-between college classes and whatnot. I've kinda just been obsessed with shmups in general after that.
I don't have a PS but I would love to give this game another go. It's been awhile since I've played a Ketsui game.
I really want Death Label, but those prices are getting just a bit too extreme...
*EDIT* actually, scratch that, I literally just moved on a really, REALLY good priced complete version that I found like, immediately after I read your comment. Looking forward to playing it!
Same here actually, got bitten by the shmup bug after reading about it in the days of DS flashcarting. Glad to hear I'm not the only one who got into the genre from this game!
@@StudioMudprints hopefully it holds up but I don't see why it wouldn't. It's basically a boss rush from what I remember on the DS, at the time I didn't even realize it was based on anything else I just thought thats what Ketsui was but I loved it.

I'll do something with it. I really don't like recording off-screen, but I'll make an exception for this one. Gotta make it worthwhile buying, after all.
Once again Europe gets shafted and left with nothing when it comes to shmups. Why can't they just release the english version in the EU instead of just ignoring the entire region altogether? I'm sure the non-english speaking countries here would rather have that than be forced to pay out €100+ just to get the disc version completely in Japanese or get absolutely nothing. Japanese publishers hate releasing stuff in the EU, and it's driving us all here crazy!
So glad to have you explain this to us. I finally picked up a copy of this from Play Asia a few weeks ago (no idea why it took me so long to order) but I’ve been hesitant to play it because I feel like I need to go to college again just to figure out the scoring! ;)
Compared to stuff like Mushi Futari and EspGaluda, this is a breeze.
Easily the nicest port I've come across to date.. Fan fookin tastic!!
There's an in-game option to lower the volume of the ear piercing lock-on sound. 😁
This is true, though we don't mind it especially much. It's not as shrill as I thought it was a decade ago from the outside listening in.
I hope eventually we get a english physical of this and Esp RaDe Psi along with other Cave stuff I've yet to play. These games are too much fun
You don't really need a English version. I have both this and Esprade in physical Japanese versions and they're perfectly fine for me. These are shoot em ups they are not story based games it's all about the gameplay
Props for having to pronounce some of these titles. Really enjoy the relaxing voice set to shoot em up goodness!

Yo! Ketsui finally got a review. Been waiting for one from you guys. I didn't know it was at the top of mount Cave though. I hope I get the limited edition for Christmas.
I truly believe it is. I really do love DDP DFK, EspGaluda I & II, and Mushi Futari, but Ketsui is so refined and playable, it stands head and shoulders above the rest.

You know what, I'm not such a fan of Esp.Ra.De., it seems a little haphazard and unclear with regards to attack and scoring. I think EspGaluda really got the formula right and took it to the next level in EspGaluda II.

Deathtiny offers all kinds of different content from PS3 while keeping the PS3 version totally relevant with its X-Mode. Worthwhile to have both for sure!

Nearly left though when confronted with attempts to Anglicise the name puns out of existence. Come on guys, it’s Death as in Death for both the mode and the gauge. That’s kinda the joke. You don’t pronounce Deathsmiles as Desusumiles in English do ya?! 😜
But Deathtiny an auditory pun that is *supposed* to sound exactly like "destiny". Same deal with the "Deathtroy" gauge. Both don't exist in English as anything at all, as opposed to Deathsmiles, which is derived from the saying, "Death smiles at us all."
The main thing here is that we likely process and learn language differently, you and I. There's a process to it that I've used for a very long time that involves thinking in the language primarily rather than translating back and forth between the primary and scondary tongue. Sorry if it bothered you, but it *really* bothers me the other way around as language techniques - and by extension translation - have been drilled into me for decades.

The layout stats info is the same as the esp Ra de for Nintendo switch..
Other way around: EspRa.De. came out a year after this did. But they all have the same layout as Battle Garegga Rev.2016
Great review as always!! Is there any word if there will be an Euro release anytime soon? I have the Japanese disc on my radar, but paying 80€ for it seems a bit harsh. :)
I assume that's due to duties and VAT as it's otherwise just 65
USD or so on PA (via the link above!) No word on a Euro release though. I would just set up a North American account and download it that way, tbh.
Word of warning if you get a us account. If it gets hacked or compromised you have to physically telephone to the usa to be helped out. Had to do that with mine, I was online with my eu account and suddenly saw my us account playing fifa at the same time xD (and I do not own a single fifa game nor would I want to haha) Turned out it was sold to someone who then proceeded to make purchases on my account. So I tried to contact sony about this online but that wasnt possible and they told me I had to make an expensive telephonecall to the us for this. So I did that, told em what happenend, changed my password, problem solved youd think.....But no, a week later my us account got blocked because the other persons purchases were still on my account and now they had contacted sony to tell them I was the one who stole their account instead...so I made a couple more phonecalls to the US....but didnt manage to get it resolved and gave up :(
Now, that was probably something like 10 years ago though, so i dont know how/if sonys support has changed since then.
And yeah it really sucks that they dont ever release any of these cave shmups in europe. These games are already *almost* too expensive at japanese/american msrp imo but if you add shipping AND add 25% importtax to that (we also pay importtaxes over the shippingcosts) that really pushes it overboard, so to speak.
And m2 apparently wont bother releasing them here because they reacted to this by saying they dont understand why we in europe dont just import from the US if we want an english version....
@@StudioMudprints That's odd - during the 360 days, Rising Star Games did release DoDonPachi Resurrection, DeathSmiles and Akai Katana in Europe. I wonder why they stopped. I had to go and import Espgaluda II and Mushihimesama myself. :) I'd rather get the Japanese disc for Ketsui than having to deal with grey-market prepaid card mongers. I got burned horribly not too long ago. And there's no way I'm giving either Sony nor MS a direct connection to my bank account again. *sigh*
Planning to get this on PS4.Not sure between getting a new or used version. I know getting it new has the dlc. What does the dlc consist of? Is it worth it? Also, I'm sure I'd have to open a Japanese account o use it.
The DLC consists of the Virt Arrange Soundtrak (aka Jake Kaufman) and the IKD Matsuri Arrange mode. Purely optional, IMO but if you want the most out of Deathtiny, it's the way to do.

i think some of japanese vocabulary muting the last word on there. like....Fukatsu pronounce Fukats. or basically Desu pronounce Des
This is also true, and demonstrated in "Deathtiny" ("Desuteini" or "Destiny") and Deathtroy ("Desutoroy" or "Destroy") This was probably a nightmare to localize properly, haha
@@ronniepatterson2827 Both pronunciations are valid; Saidaioujou actually uses both of them and is the only game in the series to do so.

I'll try to find the box version. however on a personnal level I think the visuals very dull and grey compared to other Cave titles.

Vastly. This version does not have X-Mode, but does include Super easy, IKD 2007 "Blue Label" and the all new Deathtiny mode. Worth having in addition to Extra, for sure. In fact, I just got my fourth Ketsui just moments ago: Death label on DS! A testament to how much I enjoy this game.
Very Awesome! Is there a Port you recommend over others or is the PS3 Import I have good enough?
The thing is, the PS3 version has a mode I find more fun to play (X-Mode) but Deathtiny mode is more fun to play for score. I'd say, you can't go wrong with the PS3 version and PS4 verison, as they compliment each other without making each other irrelevant. The PS3 version's Arcade mode is inaccurate though, it runs faster then the PCB did, which is fixed in the PS4 release... but that X-Mode though....

I went on a tear the last couple months collecting the Region Free PS3 Shmups and Xbox 360 ones and I just wanted to make sure I am getting good versions of the games. I picked up Ketsui and Mamarakun Curse! for PS3. I skipped out on Caldrius Blaze because I saw there was a Switch Port of that now. For 360, I picked up Dodonpachi Deluxe Edition, Espgaluda II Standard, Muchi Muchi Pork & Pink Sweets, Mushihemasama Futari 1.5, Bullet Soul Infinite Burst, and Dodonpachi Sandaioujou. Still waiting on the Dual pack Ginga Force/Eschatos to show up from Japan as well as Shooting Ani Trizeal. I ordered those two back in October and they still aren't here. Been really getting into the Genre and enjoying your videos. They have been really helpful. I hope to get into more Saturn Shooters next year. All I have there is Darius Gaiden, Thunder Force Gold Pack 2, and Radiant Silvergun.
On Saturn, you really need Thunder Force V and Layer Section straight off the bat. They're both excellent and still very affordable. Others like Gunbird, Strikers 1945 & Strikers 1945 II, and Soukyugurentai should also be grabbed sooner rather than later. They're a little pricer these days, but well worth it.
Hyper Duel and Blast Wind are nice trophies, but they absolutely aren't worth the price of admission. between the two, I recommend Blast Wind, as Hyper Duel is just a bit too basic - and thus, a real letdown at $600+ - for me.

Could anyone give me advice on how to get the jackpot trophy?
Should be easy to do so long as there's a long stretch of popcorns. It might be possible in stage 1, but I'd have to dig in again for a while to really figure it all out. No time. Hope this helps though.

Basically hit the normal shot on a regular enemy once and immediately switch to focus fire and hope for the best

Nothing anymore, we have moved away from numeric scoring. It's all about emphasis of recommendation. This would fall under "Must-Play" nowadays, which is as close as you can get.

i can't understand why people think cave games are the shit they are all clones and boring after a whuile. so many great and better shmups everywhere.starting with Toaplan games Konami Parodius saga Airgallet Banpresto had better arcades.Batusugun and Police Bat rider beat any Cave game anytime
