    ABOUT ME
    I’m 32 years old and I’m a sheep farmer from Ayrshire in South West Scotland, which is why I have such a strong accent! I was born and raised on a sheep farm watching my dad who was the shepherd.
    At 18 I went away from farming to work in the city (something I still do) and at 23 (2013) I decided I wanted to do something for some extra money so I went on a sheep shearing course. The hardest thing I’ll ever do was learning to shear sheep. [shudders thinking about it]
    I shore whilst on my holidays from work for 2 years and then in 2015 my dad died so I decided to get my own sheep so I could continue working with sheep as it was something I loved doing. From there it escalated quickly from my first 4 sheep in my mum’s garden to now running around 850 breeding ewes.
    I shore over 19,000 sheep this season in the UK and have my own shearing run which lets you see many different farms in the summer months.
    A few years ago I bought myself a sheep pregnancy scanner and have been building up my run since then.
    I watched a few farm vlogs on UA-cam and decided I could have a go and now here we are!
    Thanks for watching my videos and please subscribe if you want to see more in future.

      The truth is, that a few well heeled pedigree breeders buy and sell in a tight circle, so it is a bit of a money go round. Us mere mortals are happy to pay a sensible price for a good ram.

    Cammie, thank you for this video - texels are my favorite breed! They’re so sturdy and have a very broad “wheel base” - I think they look like four-legged tanks. Another person commented that they look like bull dogs, and I agree.

    • @wendyrowland7787
      @wendyrowland7787 Рік тому +1

      That broad wheelbase makes it very difficult for them to right themselves if they get rygged. Imagine the grief spending all that money and finding your precious ram lamb expired on his back.

    Fantastic video as always Cammie you'll be happy to know that there was a record set today being the average at £4889.53 which is absolutely incredible and a huge congratulations to all the breeders as like all types of farmers they work endless days and night to produce the best of their produce wether that be pedigree, meat or arable. Everyone farmer across the country plays and important role in feeding and establishing our nation and what a job to have!!

    Great vid, as usual Cammy. What some non farmers dont realise is, that its usually a load of boys get together and buy a high priced "Tip" for Semen, the ewe lamb off spring etc. They soon make their money back. Unless it takes "Texel Throat" and keels over within a couple of months. 😖😖

  • @craigpacker7171
    @craigpacker7171 Рік тому +6

    So glad you got all three of the rams bought, Cammie! :) A not-so-funny story... Back in the 80s, a guy I know who had registered Corriedale sheep and also had a reputation for not spending a lot of money on rams decided to shell out $2500 for a Corriedale ram at the National Corriedale Sale in the U.S. That was big money in those days. He got that ram safely home and then put him out in a field until he was ready to join the ewes.
    His first night in the field, a thunderstorm moved through. The next morning, the ram was found dead under a tree, presumably the effects of lightning hitting the tree. Talk about rotten luck!

    Why would people not in the industry complain at all, much less about the prices these amazing tips are getting? They will be passing their superb genes to new generations of lambs, and improving all stock in the UK and beyond. What's the deal with that, unless the protest is that the smaller farms have little chance to obtain these rams?
    Even the smaller farmer can rent a great tup for a lambing season, good to inject some diversity into a flock and not force someone to have to mortgage the farm for great lambs.
    Thanks for the coverage of the sale, Cammy and I love seeing all the emch on so many people there! congrats!

    I actually really love the sales videos to the point where I wish they were a little longer, but I can understand the need for shorter videos which are also great. I'm probably one of those weirdos who enjoys listening to the auctioneers and watching the bidding because they don't have a chance to go to many auctions of any kind.
    I didn't realise that the sale videos were controversial and yeah, I can see why farmers get annoyed at it. Focusing on the big money auctions may not be a great represention, but that's not your fault. If anything, I think the way you present it and acknowledge that fact, along with your other auction videos where prices are lower, actually offset that to an extent because you get a good range of sales plus it shines a light on a part of farming that people might not always know about.
    At the end of the day, it's like most auctions houses in the UK: you've got your local events that deal with small amounts of money and then you've got the big boys like Sothebys that reguarly deal with thousands of pounds of rare items. Focusing on the latter more than the former isn't ideal, but it's better than having nothing at all. Even if you're looking at both at the same time, it still doesn't capture the full picture, but you still learn something from looking at it and it gets people interested. If it encourages people to look at their own local stuff or get involved in sales and markets, even for the craic, that's a bonus.
    Sorry for the essay. The point is, your videos are great and you're doing a fine job!

    Thanks for sharing this Texel sale, Cammy! I raise Texels in the US and my goals are always to work toward the Texel types in the UK, in fact have lots of UK bloodlines in mine. The only thing I don’t understand are the “peelers” and what the causes might be for that. Here it would mean the sheep was sick or stressed and had a break in its fleece at some point.

    Having some experience in the Dog Show World, this seems like a “Specialty” where you have different breeders from everywhere who breed one particular breed say Golden Retrievers 😊 and instead of a judge, this breed of sheep are up for sale and whatever farmer gets the best price, wins first place. In the show ring like Westminster or Crufts, they announce haw well the dog did in previous shows who the Dam and Sire were and if that dog has sired any. Sometimes you will see a dog and his offspring compete in the same ring

    Why does anyone go to an auction? To get their hands on the best of something of course. I am not going to just giveaway something I put my hard earned cash an time into. Especially when I intend for it to be the best of what I have. Wether it's an art auction or a horse auction. Only difference is that a piece of art cannot generate more revenue. If it's livestock, you plan to make the most of your purchase. Also that little girl with the ice cream was so cute 😊

    I have so many questions about texel sheep now… like why are they yellow?

    Wow! People do pay big!
    I’m guessing these are all ram lambs for thorough-breeding.
    There must be a bit of personal desire in this.
    If each ram impregnates 100 per season for 5 seasons, and they have 2 offspring on average, they will father 1000, so the money is not there.
    I didn’t realise a thorough-bred texel could be so expensive!

    wouldn’t it make you feel sick if you bought one of those lambs and it dropped dead after you got it home. I love to see the kids, hopefully tomorrows farmers.
