We are Rich & Kathie, a retired husband and wife team who decided to make the leap from the suburbs of Long Island to an off-grid homestead in the Adirondacks. We are both creative, but DIY contracting and building this super energy efficient underground concrete dome is our biggest (and some would say craziest) project ever!
Join us on our journey to creating a simpler, healthier, and happier life, but remember, simple doesn't mean easy!

Totally up for a bucket brigade! We even have our own bug hats. 🙂
Thank you!
Happy Mothers Day, Kathy
Thank you!
Great job you two. It will all pay off in the end.Ya we have had too much rain. 😊
Thanks!
Hand tamper would be nice to tamp the dirt a bit as you fill it. They use them for hyper adobe builds.
Yes, we have a small one somewhere 😁
I've learned to build pulley systems for all of my heavy lifting (puff..puff..wheeze). Or...more folks for a bucket brigade. You know we are always available.
Appreciate that😁
Good luck with those mayflies and Happy Mothers Day. Deer flies will be next
Thanks!
The number of bugs is amazing. Aren't there natural predators? I've attached a Owl box to my house. Every year the Swifts build mud nests inside. They clear our the mosquitos. However th ed y have dive bombed by little pup to the extent she is afraid to go outside 😢
Yes, we have bay houses for that reason but it’s just always been an issue this time of year. It’s over by Father’s Day😁
I would think that once you get the repairs done, the clover and rye will have time to take hold, now that winter is over. Hopefully you won't have too many more problems.🙂👍👍🇨🇦
We hope so too ! Thanks!
Hello you two, Rich, can't you build an extension for your tractor? I'm thinking something like one made of steel pieces about 10-15 feet long and a small platform or box at the end that would make it easier for you to get dirt and rocks up the hill. I don't know if your tractor has a quick coupler, because then you could get a base plate and weld the structure to it and always have it ready when you need it. Greetings from Berlin (fortunately we don't have that many insects here, I would emigrate easily)
We’ve got a few ideas. It’s just about time right now… and the bugs will be gone soon (mostly) lol
Yup been there. We are draining better but have yet to pass a monsoon rain test. We will get that test soon enough though. Looks like a middle man will be needed for sure. Will be much safer and easier with a middle man for sure. Too bad you can't access that area with the tractor.
It could have been worse so we’re not that upset, coming up with ideas to make the job easier though👍😊 hope yours survives the monsoons with minimal problems!
I wonder if a corn drag elevator would help move soil. At least half way up.
Maybe. We’re looking into something like that👍
Happy Mother's Day, Kathy. It would be cool to have a portable conveyor belt system on a small trailer that you could pull around with the Kubota. Those conveyors could lift all of the dirt to the roof using a swivel base so you could direct it, like the blower chute attachment on your snow blower. The tractor would be used to load the dirt & rocks onto the conveyor so there'd be no manual labor and you might be able to use the tractor's PTO to operate the conveyor belt instead of a separate motor. Good to see you both and take care, guys.
Thank you! And yes, we are looking into something like that but they’re expensive to rent so we’re thinking up our own way…not easy! Lol
Is there some sort of geo-fabric available that could shed most of the rain water but let the grass grow through it? Then a single layer of rocks almost to the top to anchor it all down? You might recruit a bunch of body builders for a day for the bucket brigade. Another meaning for rock 'n roll! Lol
We do have a netting there that actually helped a lot. We just have to get everything finished so it can become established.
@@CreatingASimplerLifeOffGrid Yeah, I saw that when you did it. I guess I was thinking a second layer on top, making a 'sandwich' that the grass could grow through while holding the soil in place. But as you know, mother nature is going to do what she wants. Lol
@@dougtravins9624 ah, that could work. True about mother nature though! LOL
Mosquitos?? So early up north??
No. Black flies
Great job !
Thanks
Nooice!😎 STOC
Thank you!
Good team work! You may need to get your excavator back, gonna be a lot of work for a bucket brigade! Love watching your progress.
Thanks 👍 we will get him back if we can!
There are a couple videos of simple diy conveyor that people have built for moving dirt and gravel. They are made using 2x4 lumber, a drill, and duct tape - nothing fancy and only durable enough to get the job done. I will find the links and post them here.
Here is another, this fellow used duct tape for the belting material. Simple but not easy! ua-cam.com/video/vBu54x2dlWU/v-deo.htmlsi=85TRTskL7Xvwe2dS
Would definitely be interested!
Hmm, the first link didn’t go through, here it is again. This is part 3, be sure to see their channel for part 1 and 2. They use two by fours and the belt is made from polyethylene plastic bag material that comes from the manufacturer in a long continuous role. The system is powered with a right angle drill. What is interesting to me is it that at any given time these conveyors are transporting just a few cups of material so it doesn’t need to be super strong or heavily engineered. ua-cam.com/video/Qf_H-9Ek1ek/v-deo.htmlsi=LqtWs2NvAUhkfd0b
Here is another, it uses a ladder as the frame and a treadmill for the locomotion. The belt is an agricultural component. ua-cam.com/video/btCFBsjETBE/v-deo.htmlsi=0H6tJ_MZb11Dp99q
