I definitely prefer vinyl and will always be my first go-to option, although I collect all music formats. One of the more important advantages(to me) that CD has over vinyl is the artwork. Not the size obviously, but the extra stuff. I have several vinyl releases that don't have any insert and also aren't a gatefold. Just a standard single jacket with the vinyl housed in a plain paper sleeve. No printed insert with lyrics or art. Meanwhile, the CD version of the same release will have a booklet with extra art and/or lyrics. There are some instances where I purchased the CD even though I have the vinyl because I want the lyrics and art. Always disappointing when a vinyl release is the most basic, bare bones thing possible. Especially considering what they are charging for some of them.
Good point! I also have some plain records with no extra inserts. CDs almost always have art/lyric booklets which is one of the main things I love about CDs. I have a lot of records where the inserts/sleeves have the same art as the CD booklet.

for some reason, cassets have the clearest sound, cd sounds like 20% of how the mastertape/ IRL recording -sounded in the studio. here is a video that talks about it ua-cam.com/video/cLWHPy9zdGs/v-deo.html . cd dosent sound really good if u ask me, ive heard an open-reel tape of a pink floyd song, it sounded i was in the same room as em. i think he got it from an old vinyl fabric in germany where they pressed the dark side of the moon
If you don't want to digital, and you dont want to miss out on all the great albums, you will need to do both as some albums aren't on cd and others aren't on lp.

Thank you! I have 3 cassettes but I wouldn’t consider myself a cassette collector. I don’t listen to them they’re signed from my favorite band so they’re more for decoration. Cassettes are cool but I’m always afraid of messing up the tape inside lol.
I still have CDs but there's another format that you have not considered as a part of the equation of cassettes vs vinyl LPs while I have found that some vinyl records I've been somewhat great overtly priced on the other hand I have found that cassettes can be more cheaper but still analog. In which cassettes were also the very first media format that I started collecting when I was younger. And I also have found out that cassettes in terms of size or a little bit more smaller than CDs are and plus not only that with cassettes you don't have to change necessarily a needle or a stylus the only thing you have got to do is just keep the playback and recorded clean and the pinch roller in the capstan clean

I much prefer CDs over vinyl due to sound quality of each. For vinyl, they have the equivalent of 11 bits and having a bit of that “warmth” to them which is distortion. CDs on same songs as vinyl can sound much, much cleaner at 16 bits with 0 analogue distortion. Also, they’re uncompressed at 1,411.2 kb/s in stereo bringing out much of the detail out of the songs possible as they can (or dual mono if a song was presented originally in mono).
I been collecting vinyl since 2006 little bit before the vinyl resurgence. I love the experience of vinyl but in recently years I prefer CDs cause it’s a lot less maintenance and sounds a lot fuller and more bass than vinyl. I love collecting cassettes just owning the music is a way better experience than streaming.
Agreed. I have a nice vinyl collection now after a year. But I have a huge collection of Cds that were in their booklets from long ago. Dusted them off then realized that you can buy a new cd player for not much money. Got one and bam the cds play perfect. Some of them go back to my high school days. 30 years back and still play perfectly. Vinyl is great but now they are charging crazy prices for one album. Taylor swifts Taylors version of Speak now will run you $49. That's insane. I got the special edition Taylors version of Red and 1989 For $13.99 and $12.99 each on CD. Both sound awesome. Love Vinyl but there is so much that goes into owning them. Have to have a special home for them and they take up space like crazy. Cds you can just put in a CD Booklet and recycle the plastic cases if you want. Also CDs are pretty much the pinnacle of listening quality.
A very nice overview. Buy and play what you want as it's about your enjoyment of the music. Thankfully, I've not seen much of the stereotyped vinyl snobbery either online or in person which is nice. For me, I was into CDs when they first came out and only recently into vinyl. I just bought about a dozen or so a week or so ago for .99 each yet one had an original price tag of 29.95 (Braveheart Soundtrack). I'd forgotten CDs were so expensive in the past. Again, as I don't currently play CDs all that often my experience with newer ones is very limited but I remember plenty of gripes having to deal with fingerprints, scratches, and skips in the past when I had portable CD players. I had to carry them in hand and level so they sounded good. I have a second gen. PS3 that plays CDs but I'd have to dig it out of the attic to play them now or download appropriate codecs for my laptop. If your biggest concern is price then CDs are a no-brainer; they're also the same for storage, maintenance, and accessibility as even though the shift away from physical media still leaves plenty of equipment that plays CDs by default and that's not the case for vinyl records. That being said, for me the higher involvement with vinyl is why I like it more; I refer to the whole of it as embodied listening as the process, as you laid out, is more involved from start to finish. That's the appeal, to be more engaged in the process as opposed to the usual divided attention we give to tasks nowadays by default. The artwork on the jackets and inserts is also a nice touch and I've actually paused to enjoy such artwork for the likes of The Exorcist, Terminator, Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines, to name the first albums that immediately come to mind. Gatefolds, when used efficiently, are fantastic canvases for artwork and I find that even the default black vinyl record color more appealing than most CDs by default. In fact, I'm feeling more like Frank from Channel 33 RPM insomuch as I prefer the plain black to colored unless it harmonizes with the artwork of the jacket.
Amazing, well said. I enjoyed reading your opinions/story. I agreed with a lot of what you said. I only buy colored vinyl pressings that I think match the cover art the best. I don’t like it when artist release like 10 colored variants of the same album, it seems like overkill to make more money. I enjoy the vinyl playing experience more, but I think CDs are more convenient. There are pros and cons to both, but I enjoy each collection for different reasons.
CDs are cheaper and if properly mastered sound better than vinyl (as its a technically superior format.) Vinyl is big and tactile, the album art alone makes it collectible. But its terribly impractical and expensive. Vinyl usually is better mastered than CD as the technical limitations of the format means mastering engineers can't brickwall the mix. BTW as far as equipment goes - if you are using hi-fi separates, and spend the same on the turntable or CD player, the CD will sound better though the sound quality is determined by the DAC. Whereas for a decent turntable its mainly the quality of the cartridge, tonearm and phono preamp.

The whole phony debate is just silly. This one misses the point -- it is not about 'acquiring a collection', it is about audio quality, as well as how and where you want to listen (living room, automobile, background while working, etc) Sound quality is not totally subjective when comparing digital with vinyl -- the mixing of the music at the studio is crucial. Badly mixed music on vinyl will sound worse than well mixed music on CD and vice versa. The current trend of high compression hands the advantage to vintage vinyl. Portability and size was what killed vinyl, and especially record stores (commercial floor space, especially in malls, is hella-expensive). Portability and size is also the reason streaming killed CDs. The price you pay for that is mp3 grade audio quality, as well as mp3 headaches. Keep in mind that a lot of vinyl offered online (including Amazon) is counterfeit and bad quality. You neglected to mention the 12" plastic milk crates, a must-have for fining vinyl. 😉 The 'jewel' case is actually the worst thing about CDs.

I used to buy a ton of cds bc i like playing them in the car and singing along. I find cds convenient but vinyls are a lot more work to listen to. I have switched more to vinyl tho. 1 cuz I haven’t been driving very much since I started college. and 2 cuz I’ve been going to a lot of emo concerts where the ticket is cheap and the record is cheap and it’s a good way to support small artists (plus they usually don’t even have cds). If i end up driving a lot after i graduate maybe ill switch back to cds
Nice. A few concerts I’ve been to sold the band’s CD. And only 1 show had the vinyl. So I notice more CDs at shows, but I try to buy a physical copy at the show if I don’t already have it.

I have about 40 cassettes but they are all my original cassette collection I compiled from 1986-1995.

I prefer CDs over vinyl. CDs are smaller and can be taken anywhere. Vinyls can't really do that for you. Also, most of my fav songs came on CD only.
