The comment section makes me sad. Why do people watch these videos if they don’t believe?
I’m so grateful for this series, I’m enjoying it a great deal. Thank you for posting it!

Exciting! His brilliance adds a flare to understanding not just the Book of Mormon, but the entire arc of history that links Adam to my grandchildren. The Holy Priesthood is the common thread, and where that thread broke, so did society.

Second time through the lecture series by Brother Nibley. He inspires a desire to learn more, and to have a breadth and depth of knowledge that ties things together. I am continually impressed by the humility and good humor of Brother Nibley. Certainly, a man whose thoughts we are blessed to have still with us.

I am a Mormon I know that God lives and that he sent his only Son Jesus Christ to die for our sins. I know that this is the other record to come forth predicted by Isiah and Ezekiel. This work is truly the restitution of all things therefore soften your heart and pray in faith to know if these things are true. As James said f any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.

What lies are you referring to. Which Catholic church are you talking about. How could we not have a testimony of Christ for it was he who founded our church. I pray for you sister I pray that all may be accepting of this work that we can all of us the whole human race do as Christ directed and love one another. And as Alma said "But behold, if ye will awake and arouse your faculties, even to an experiment upon my words, and exercise a particle of faith, yea, even if ye can no more than desire to believe, let this desire work in you, even until ye believe in a manner that ye can give place for a portion of my words". Pray for guidance. All love your brother

Not only was he a great scholar, but he was genuinely funny as well. How glad am I that we have his work available here on UA-cam for free. Thanks so much for uploading!

Another great video to reflect on by Hugh Nibley

Mormons are one of the most misunderstood groups on the planet because people only get half the story, and they don't even get that part right, as you demonstrated in your comment above. Since you've already watched 2 of the Hugh Nibley lectures, consider watching some more so that you can get the other half of the story and perhaps correct some of the misconceptions that you already have.
It is easy to tear others down, but being constructive is of greater value.

"You won't find BofM evidence in the New World..." of course you won't. It never happened. One thousand years is not that long ago in archeology.

What a shame! I believe that Mr. Nibley was a sincere man, but he offered nothing that would support a position in favor of the Book of Mormon. In fact, he lied to you. He said that because most of what transpired during the time of Nephi was in the "old world" it is no wonder that there is no archaeological proof. May I remind the reader that if you took a trip to Israel today, you could visit numerous biblical sights where Old and New Testament characters walked, preached, were imprisoned, were persecuted, were martyred, etc. There is a tremendous amount of geological proof and relics that support a biblical world view. On the contrary, Mormonism is simply religious fiction veiled in Masonic tokens and doctrines known as endowments. Mormonism is man's greatest expression of a "works related" gospel and appeals to anyone who wishes to believe that one day he too may become a god. What a slap to the face of the Lord Jesus Christ, who demonstrated His love on Calvary's cross so sinful man could find peace with God. It is not through the religious rites of the Mormon church or any other church for that matter that solves mans sinful condition. Salvation occurs only when Christ's atonement is applied to the life of a believer through the glorious gospel of Jesus. You may read about this in First Corinthians 15:1-4. Mormonism is "another gospel" preached unto a people with itchy ears. Mormons are "hood winked" and cannot see the truth about the Saviour or their sinful condition. Indeed......what a shame!

    • @schex86
      @schex86 9 років тому +4

+David Lynn IMHO, you offered nothing in support of your position. How exactly does one prove that Mormons have rejected Christ's atonement? What a shame for you to judge your fellow Christians in such a manner.

+Jesse Schexnayder It is obvious to me that the Mormon religion is not a Christian religion, considering these beliefs which are held by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints:
"GOD used to be a man on another planet."
"The Father has a body of flesh and bones as tangible as man’s . . . ,"
"God is in the form of a man."
"God himself was once as we are now, and is an exalted man, and sits enthroned in yonder heavens!!! . . . We have imagined that God was God from all eternity. I will refute that idea and take away the veil, so that you may see."
"God the Father had a Father."
"God resides near a star called Kolob."
"God had sexual relations with Mary to make the body of Jesus."
"Therefore we know that both the Father and the Son are in form and stature perfect men; each of them possesses a tangible body . . . of flesh and bones."
"After you become a good Mormon, you have the potential of becoming a god."
"Then shall they be gods, because they have no end; therefore shall they be from everlasting to everlasting, because they continue; then shall they be above all, because all things are subject unto them. Then shall they be gods, because they have all power, and the angels are subject unto them."
      "There are many gods."
"And they (the Gods) said: Let there be light: and there was light."
      "There is a mother god."
"God is married to his goddess wife and has spirit children."
"The trinity is three separate Gods: The Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost. That these three are separate individuals, physically distinct from each other, is demonstrated by the accepted records of divine dealings with man."
All these points, which are beliefs and doctrines held by the LDS church are opposed to Christianity as taught in the Bible. These quotes are taken from: Mormon Doctrine, Journal of Discourses, Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, History of the Church, Pearl of Great Price, Articles of Faith, Book of Abraham, and Articles of Faith.

+Loving Life You have done your homework Loving Life. Mormonism is nothing more than religious fiction veiled in Masonic tokens. Mormon doctrine is basically a "works" doctrine like all the other world religions that oppose true Christianity. It is sad that so many sincere people believe the lie and trust their works to gain God's favor. I think you might enjoy a video on UA-cam called New Name Noah. Here you will go into the temple with members and watch them practice Masonic rituals and take occult vows. Loving life....Keep the faith!

@@lovinglife7211 The description of "Mormonism" in your comment is consistent with an ancient near eastern mythology of gods, interestingly Dr. Nibley also makes this very connection between the ancient myths and Joseph Smith's restoration. The very idea of "angels, heavenly books, prophets, Gods, temples,"etc. has been repudiated by Christiandom (from the second century to the 21st century), so technically "Mormonism" is not Christianity by definition.

What a great advocate you are for Lucifer. He must be as pleased with you as she finds you interesting Lee manipulable.
It is adorable how you chop up facts and try to assemble them like an upside-down puzzle.
Without the Holy Spirit you will never be able to understand the true nature and Mysteries of God.
It's your choice. Pray for understanding or just walk away. Don't try preaching your false Doctrine to those who know and believe.

I tried very hard indeed to follow this man's lecture, but it proved impossible. His ramblings display a lack of coherence that destroys any thread of continuity and sense.
He speaks in little groups of thoughts, often disconnected, and does not usually come to points or conclusions. I have never listened to any other university professor who presents such a disjointed unintelligible talk, and I have listened to dozens of professors, on subjects from Christianity, archaeology, biology, linguistics, Latin, to ancient history, literature, mathematics, sociology and many other disciplines.

There is a wonderful book called Made to Stick, which talks about how to make ideas simple and memorable. Unfortunately, that book came out 50 years too late for brother nibley. He has what the book calls the "curse of knowledge." He knows a TON. 6+ languages, histories from so many societies and stories and god bless him, but he struggles to get it out in a linear fashion. I confess that I watch these videos to get a feel for the times that he speaks of. I won't connect all the dots about the eras, languages and histories, but over time, I become more familiar... and to be inspired that someday I can learn more deeply on the topics... and hopefuly explain it with a little bit more ease.

Dr. Nibley is speaking to the "initiated," students who have been familiarized with the Book of Mormon, (4:28) as with any subject that a particular professor would speak on. Familarize yourself with the text of the Book of Mormon then listen to the lectures, the "ramblings" will be meaningful.
