  • It's not what you might expect but the best way to store potting soil is to keep using it to grow plants such as cover crops or other seasonal options. Amend it with organic matter after harvesting or clearing for the season and put your potting soil back to work. I would never throw it away. I pour it out of the pots, into a larger covered container to reuse. As I reuse it I usually amend jt with fresh potting soil or compost. I love your idea to regenerate it with a cover crop.

I have never tried cover crops, I like the new idea. I put in the compost bin or re-amend, soil is too expensive to throw away. Thank you.

Great idea! I tend to just let stray horse herb and clover go in my grow bags over winter until they freeze. I'd love to know of other nitrogen fixers that might work!

Yeah! You might try fava beans, Austrian winter pea, or crimson clover

I plant winter rye in my 8x4 bed over the winter in Austin because I usually taken break from gardening when it’s cold. It grows super fast and thick and keeps the soil happy until spring. It didn’t mind the hard freeze we had this past winter either, didn’t need to cover or anything. Then I cut it and turn the soil over a month or so before planting season so it can compost a bit.

I compost mine though I haven’t done much in terms of a cover crop for my raised beds. My veggie garden game is weak I tell you! Thankful for this channel!

I reuse my organic potting mix by dumping containers in a large kiddie pool, adding fresh organic fertilizer then refill containers for new plantings of either produce or ornamentals. It is too expensive to replace all soil every year and wasteful.

Damn. I didnt do this. Will do next year, but this "spring" I'll just give it some compost and worm poop to revitalize and get the microbiology back.

I live in south Austin. I never throw out potting mix. I usually dump it out onto a tarp, add Black cow or mushroom compost, maybe mix in a little slow release general purpose fertilizer and then add another new bag of mix. I guess it just depends on how many and how big the containers are that I'm about to plant. I typically use 15 gallon fatty and 15 gallon tall nursery containers. to plant in.
I do have some questions about your citrus, if you have time to respond. Enjoyed the videos.

I'd like to know about your fertilizing regimen for the citrus. I have a "new" to me Meyer lemon and a two year old pink lemonade lemon. The Meyer is vary gangly and probably needs to be shaped and/or pruned. It has not bloomed. Of course heading into winter may present an issue until spring.
the pink lemon bloomed and fruited but after reaching the size of a small marble the fruit fell off. Both are in large 15 gallon pots.
      any suggestions on care? Thanks.@@newgardenroad

I fertilize consistently from March through October with a granular product every 4-6 weeks and a liquid drench every two weeks. Here's a couple of videos sharing my approach:
