    As we know Terry not every play with a filter is a step forward and a winner. That's the point in playing the game with them the important tweak you do that works and a lesson learnt when it don't. Thanks for working on this most interesting to us that like to play the filter game

      Hi Rob, and thanks mate. The koi do seem to have grown more this year for some reason. Now I have the bakki river running as it should, the nitrates are coming down. The problem with the nitrates was my fault, as I tried to have the bakki river following the protein skimmer, which didn't work. It all looks to be coming good again now though, thank you mate, take care, Terry.

    Awesome pond and interesting vid thanks.
    I chucked a big bag of watercress into a basket last year and it reduced my nitrates to next to zero. Really fast growth.
    The Bakki filter media I have reduces my Nitrates a little.
    I've also been using water from a desiccant dehumidifier and it works a treat for lower nitrates. It produces 8 liters per day and is cheaper to run than a RO unit. Unlike the compressor types, it does have the metal contamination and is pure. I just add bicarb or clay to increase the trace elements for KH, etc.
    On your skimmer, I've seen the use of capillaries instead of a wider funnel to remove the foam faster. Worth a try.

    Hi Terry, how frustrating with those nitrates. Well if anyone can sort it it’s you. Your fish are looking fantastic by the way. Hope you get your nitrates and that pesky algae fixed. Interesting to see how that product performed ( or didn’t). We can potentially invest a lot of money over a year in some of the additives we buy. I guess they may react differently to various scenarios and set ups. Keep smiling, all the best

    I Terry, I think the plants you took out were doing a good job keeping the nitrates down and you need to maybe use more siporax and up your water changes to replace them. I can't remember if you have a trickle in and out system if you haven't I would recommend doing one. I'm heavily stocked like you and the trickle system has made so much difference. If you're on a meter I'd suggest a veg filter. There really is nothing like plants to take out nitrates. And it will give you something to do.😅I don't mean to try to teach my grandmother to suck eggs. Always look forward to you videos, thanks.

    • @Wrighty
      @Wrighty  2 роки тому +2

      Hi Tony, it was the way I had it plumbed causing the problem with the nitrates. Coming from the protein skimmer had too much air in the water. Now I've re-plumbed it the nitrates are coming down quite quickly. I do have over double the amount of Siporax recommended for my pond size, so that should be ok. I'm unable to have a veg filter as the wife says, I can have no more garden lol. Like you say, plants are the best think for nitrates, but the trouble there is I loose too much pond room for the amount of koi I have. Thanks for the tips mate, much appreciated. Take care, Terry.

  • @DerbyKoi

    Theres always something that keeps us busy with koi, bypassing the moving bed to the river hopefully will start to get the nitrates in check and adding more media can only help, I cant remember if you have, but I've got a trickle system that can be altered to help with situations like this. Hope you get it sorted Terry 👍

    Love when you tinker with the filters :-) I have used those tablets before in an emergency, as well as the nitrite one on a separate occasion. they have worked for me BUT i didnt desolve them, I just put them in a little mesh bag in the multibay. After 3 days the nitrates went down dramatically. I could watch the upflow filter and protein skimmer for hours on ends. Dont know what it is, they are like mesmerizing :-)

      Hi Lau, I must admit, the up-flow and protein skimmer are fascinating lol. I was thinking of putting the Envii in my moving bed, but to trial it properly, I had to follow the instructions on the packet to the letter, and it didn't make any difference at all, as you saw in the video. I might get some for the moving bed and see how it goes. Thanks Lau, take care and stay safe, Terry.

    Hi Terry
    I a not surprised that the Envii product did not work as I tried Envii Pond Equaliser and that did not seem to do a great deal either; I even contacted Envii to report my disappointing results and they sent a new packet out, in case the original bag was breached or contaminated during shipping, alas to no avail.
    Great video as always and I will be very interested to see the solution to your nitrate problem

      Hi David, I was it on eBay and their selling loads of it, so I thought I'd find out if it worked as this was a good opportunity. As you saw in the video, it didn't do anything. That's why I had to follow the instructions on the packet to the letter. I ended up giving it a triple dose in the end, but nothing. Hi mate, I love to hear about people making there own pond equipment. If we can get enough of us doing it, the manufactures just might start to bring prices down to a sensible level. Apologies if I already suggested this, but have you tested the tap water? I was surprised how much nitrate is in mine, and it may have changed in your area recently. If not I was also wondering like Ian J if the nitrate treatment was affecting the skimmit, although no idea why! I also wondered if by changing the outlet, the water had changed speed through the protein skimmer and that affected it?
    Thanks for such an interesting video again, one final question, I know you've mentioned it in the past but I couldn't find the video - but what type are your lillies, I'm planning to get some next year, and yours seem to stand up better than most to the fish's bombardment :)

    • @Wrighty
      @Wrighty  2 роки тому +2

      Hi mate, I must admit, I've not tested my tap water lately, so I will give it a go. I think your right about the Envii treatment stopping the protein skimmer, it's the only thing that was different mate. As the up-flow and protein skimmer run from the same pump, the flow hasn't changed. I did try increasing the flow, but it made no difference. I'm sure it was the Envii treatment that was the problem. It's working well again now. The lily I have is in this video: ua-cam.com/video/Jr1qOtMUwbU/v-deo.html
      if I remember correctly it's called the White British/European lily, I can't remember the proper name for it, so check the video mate to be sure. Thank mate and take care, Terry.

    I love all the filter systems you make its fantastic Terry, I've Only one ? to ask if you dont mind, if you have such high levels, the best and most effective result to remove Nitrates, is to half the water and you’ve removed 50 percent of the nitrate, that said you also need to find the cause of the high levels, but to remove it fast can be just as bad for the fish as the High level in the first place, so 20% water change over 7 days would remove the problem slowly allowing the fish to acclimate to the change slowly, I am guessing you have done this ? but with such a large pond this could also be difficult, the only reason I asked is that you never mentioned anything about water changes to also help lower the levels of nitrate thanks for sharing kind regards Gary 👍👍👍

    The reason you didnt get skimate is because of the envii it likely changed the water by increasing turbidity, tgat means the bubles in the skimmer were too large to produce skimate.

      Hi Khi, that's what I put it down to mate, as it was the only thing I'd done different. It's certainly working well again now. Thanks mate and take care, Terry.

    Certainly, the nitrate level has improved. By the way, why are you planting lotus in the pond? Do you expect them to remove nitrite and nitrate? I recently had a water quality test done as well. Check out the following video.

      Hello, I have a bakki river to help with my high nitrate, also any plants growing in the pond will help use up the nitrates. I have a moving bed filter that keeps my ammonia and nitrite at 0.0 My only problem is nitrates. Thanks, Terry.

    Poor the envii in the bakhi river, thats where anaerobic bacteria wants to be. It wont work in the pond because of all the airstones etc.

      Hi Khi, I wanted to do a proper trial with the Envii, so I had to follow the instructions on the packet to the letter, or they'd have said I didn't do it right mate. Their selling loads of this on eBay, so I thought I find out as this was a good opportunity. Thanks mate and take care, Terry.

      Fair enough fella, if you get your hands on anymore pour it in the bakhi river if your so inclined, also the black flakes will be a polymer that the bacteria feed on to get established...thats if it follows the normal route etc.
