- Going to small claims court on your own can be very confusing and intimidating. This video is intended to help you better understand the steps and procedures involved in going to small claims court on your own. In addition, this video will familiarize you with the clerk's office, the court room and the different roles of the people you will encounter while representing yourself in small claims court. This video was funded by a grant from Illinois Equal Justice Foundation.

I think it was a great video and very helpful. I'm from Idaho and was wondering if it's the same in every state? I was also wondering if it matters whether it's two business individuals involved can one business individual file a claim against another business individual or is the small claims just for personal loses?
thank you
Good video.

If you lost your proof of service, you can contact the sheriff's office or check the case file at the court through the court clerk's office. Be sure to have the case number when inquiring about this information. You can also get more information at Illinois Legal Aid.org.
Thank you ^_^.
Thank you for your interest in Illinois Legal Aid Online's videos. Unfortunately Illinois Legal Aid Online does not provide legal advice or representation. We cannot answer individual legal questions.
This video explains things far better than some folks who call themselves lawyers. Go figure!
PS this judge looks scary, yikes!
Good video. But here in Massachusetts it's much simpler... the court notifies the defendant through mail, and you only have to fill out one single form. I feel bad for people out there- it's so much more complicated!
Wow, this is defferent from the Tv court like Judge Judy
What about if I lost proof of the defendant being served can I get a copy from the sheriffs office ?
"If the defendant does not pay the amount of the judgment, review the information on this website about how to collect the judgement"

Excellent presentation of a complex topic. I didn't see any information on how to collective judgement if the defendant refuses to pay..
So nothing has changed in this process in 13yrs?
great video. now i know what to expect. CCOL BEANS!
An application to sue or defend as a poor person.😒 Not too subtle.
How can you appeal the judgment on the small claims court
what happens if the plantiff lied that the papers were served?
Would this work for stolen phones? But i have no evidence besides witnesses and the fact my phone is gone after he left that is this a good enough?

Excellent information, now I, am suing someone in New Jersey, and I saw that they were served by email, which is much easier than the old way of doing it. Now, my court date is Feb 9, I am using a dealership for a few issues, including the fact that they sold me a car with flood damage, there is a New Jersey law that regulates that, without telling me, and I have a question about the exhibits, I understand that I as the plaintiff have to use numbers, the defense uses letters?, and the question is how to number the exhibits, should I just have one very long exhibit, for instance the selling contract is 33 pages long, and with all the photos, and number everything, it would go up to 70 pages, yes there is a lot (they even sold me tire insurance on bad tires), or should I label each issue, within the same transaction, of buying this car, and then go like 1C,1C,1C, and for the second exhibit, 2C,2C,2C, etc, thanks
He's guilty
