FREE Camping by the Lake - Hunnewell Conservation

- This is another awesome free campsite. We've had this one on our list for a while. We love to hit our free conservation areas in the off seasons (fall/winter) for some cool weather camping. Since these do not provide electricity, you will hear our generator in the video. It's really not as loud as the microphone makes it sound in the video. And we still follow quiet hour rules. We are by the lake which provides access to duck hunting (when in season), fishing and even magnet fishing. There are paddle boats provided for free to use out on the lake. This particular campground is located near some great older towns, a nice state park and a famous persons birthplace that we will explore during this short series of videos. Specifically we will visit the towns of Palmyra, Florida & Monroe City. Be sure to subscribe so you won't miss the rest of the series. And drop us a comment below even if it's just to say hi.

Love the old houses. Used to shop at Ben Franklins with my mom as a little girl. Too bad they are almost gone. Nice murals. Cute little town. Free is definitely a plus for the boats and the site.
My mom worked at a Ben Franklin in her younger days. Always think it’s cool if I spot one. We love free camping. If it had been warmer and I would have taken my life jacket, we probably would have tested out one of the free boats.

We do have some great little historic towns.
That was a neat old town. There is a lot of history there too. That old cabin was super cool. Interesting about the campground and the boat situation. No worries for me, I don't own a boat nor would I. LOL. Seemed like you had the place to yourselves again. You have some interesting combinations of food. Not sure about that cheesecake. I'd try just about anything at least once though. LOL. Who knows, maybe it would be my new favorite. I do like a mango habanero chicken sandwich at my favorite restaurant. Mango habanero chicken sandwich sounds delicious! I'm sure I would love that. Other than that one camper, we were totally alone camping there. But it was fall and cold and wet. So that's most likely why.

Pretty nice camping area and the price is right, Felix and Jesse! Palmyra is a cool town with some great older buildings. We don't see many Ben Franklins anymore that are open. (as a Ben Franklin) We've seen quite a few that are either closed or the sign is still up, but the business inside is something else. There are still a few open! Beautiful area and a nice lake. Enjoyed the tour.
It's a nice campground. We'll probably keep this one on our list for a return trip some day. The town is very cute. Love the oldness of it. Ben Franklins are very few and far between. My mom worked at one when she was quite young. So every time I see one, I think of her mentioning how she worked there. Shame all those old stores have gone by the wayside.

The old buildings and houses were way cool ! Would be nice camping near a town like that. Got to love free camping with boats ready to use. I bet they fill up in the summer. The water looks low like it does in Michigan. Not enough snow over the winter for us. Which was kind of nice as far as shoveling goes :) Like always the food you made and brought from home looked Yummy😊
We’ve had a bit of spring rain so that may be more full now. Hoping much of our waters are more full. They were looking pretty bad.
Free camping is always good. That’s a cool little downtown. That log cabin was really nice. Tikka Masala is pretty yummy 😁. Outhouses can be super sketchy lol. Pineapple habanero cheese cake. Sounds interesting.
It is a neat little old town. This site was in a great location to do some exploring around. We had to divide this camp trip up into three vids lol.

Looks like agreat area! I still think it's wild there are free campsites and they even have free paddle boats! Also, that habenaro dessert sounded amazing. I love sweet and spice things! For a while spicy beers were pretty popular and I always enjoyed sampling those when I found them.
We love our free camping areas. Not all of them are real great, but we do have a few gems. Oh gosh. I missed the spicy beer thing. I'm not much on beer, but I may have liked those.
Very cool old town. Missouri has lots of interesting civil war history. Looks like a nice camp spot would be great if they took better care of the restrooms. The lakes around here are really low also. Yum cheese cake!!! Have a wonderful day my friends!!!😊
Yes it would be nice if the restrooms were better kept. I would say it's hard to complain since it's free, but we've been to some of our other free camping areas and the bathrooms are nicer. We still very much enjoyed the free camping.
I'm excited at the thought of a free place to setup and go camping. I got so excited I looked this park up. Unfortunately it's not on one of my travel paths, maybe in the future if we are headed back to Wisconsin. I could see stopping here then for 2 nights. I like that they have some boats available to use, since I never bring my own boat. I really liked all the older buildings in town.
What? You never take your own boats? You could just strap them right to the side of the camper 😆 Funny you mention this wouldn't be in your path. We don't have a lot of conservation areas in the northwest area of the state. Really not too many on the far west side at all. There's one in the north central, but we haven't put that video out yet. I like to do mine mostly in order. It's a thing for me. Probably OCD or something 😂🤷🏻♀
Boy everything was pretty empty, from the campgrounds to the old town. I would love it! Habanero cheesecake? Is it spicy?
Very off time of the year. Cold fall days. People were probably being smart and staying inside where it's warm lol
It’s pronounced Hunn - e - well. It’s a nice campground. The house is for the head Ranger. He lives there. There is also a dump station and potable water behind the office building along the fence line. I stayed there 2 weeks a couple of years ago. It was real empty until Memorial day and then it filled up 😂. It’s close to my family in Hannibal. Palmyra is a cool little town. That’s where I took my driver’s license test. Sorry to see that the Ben Franklin store is closed. There is one in Monroe City that’s really nice. Thanks for showcasing these small, interesting little towns.

I hope so. I think it was kind of scary how low water levels got.
Yall ever thought about a propane generator. They are quiter. Less fumes. AND YOU AIN'T GOT TO WORRY ABOUT CARBON DIOXIDE AS bad as a regular gas generator
@@Leebeaux1 Was trying to remember if ours is dual or not. Wasn't really something we had thought about too much. Propane can get expensive and not sure how we would haul a huge tank if we had one. Maybe in the future.

Great video, the town was interesting, but it didn't look that old to me. Tikka masala the national dish over here but not with chickpea. The camp ground looked nice, but I thought you called it Hung Well 😲🤣.

I'm getting ready to start some weekend camping here in Missouri. I can't recall if y'all said you had ever been to Weston or not, but if you ever make it over here, let me know. 👍
We have visited Weston, but have not camped there. It’s still on our list of state parks to camp. If we ever get there, we’ll let you know.
@@HappyPlaceCamping Weston Bend State Park is like 3 miles from Weston. There is even a trail from the state park to city hall. 👍
