My own father did his schooling without slippers. He had one set of kurta pajama that he washed everyday. Had to teach tuitions to pay his fees. As being from a farmers family after death of his Mom & Dad till his high school he did everything that earned money. Indian middleclass is full of stories where their mom & dad sacrificed their lives to teach their kids. People often consider certain jobs as inferior but they forget everybody has their own beginning. Becoming something always start from scratch. Helping people with expecting a return is business humanity is fueled with our passion for someone's smile & humility.
Indians by nature, we never say no to help someone in their studies or in hunger. Our literature says, " For the sake of studying / knowledge it's not wrong even to beg". Infact our culture teaches us to help another in giving knowledge.

Hard to believe it was hard for him to understands the options coming from the back ground he came from. To choose a reading material as an option, as in an option to choose one over the other could be challenge, but it seems from his narrative, he was finding it hard to understand the material, the content that he was reading - WHY?
