  • Steve Dangle thinks referees have been brutal lately, and have been completely screwing up and having a massive impact on the outcome of close games. Harsh words and a harsh rant. What do you think?

    Sending refs down would be a good thing. It happens in the Premier League. If a ref makes a mistake bad enough they get demoted to the lower leagues for a couple of weeks.

    It's been inconsistent this year. What is a penalty? What is goalie interference? What is a distinct kicking motion? What is suspendible? Make up your mind guys lol

    • @rylesg74
      @rylesg74 8 років тому +2

      +davfernape You might want to ask NHL Executives, not the Officials. The Officials are only calling what the NHL allows them or tells them to call. You're placing your blame at the wrong group. Get a clue.

      +Riley Grams #1 I never said "refs" or "referees" for everything. #2 some things I mentioned are in fact ref calls. Some might be reviewed and changed by Toronto, but some things such as a no goal for goalie interference (without a coach's challenge) are initially from the refs. Yeah the commission and the guys at Toronto influence a lot of things, so that's why I didn't say refs specifically. And I mean...refs make a lot of calls. That's why they are there lol

    The Rozsival call in the Stadium Series game over the weekend came to mind while watching this. Interference major + misconduct for a legal hit vs. the Wild when the Hakws were down 4-0. They only called the penalty once they noticed Zucker was hurt, and he was only hurt from his fall, not the hit, which was low and within half-a-second of puck possession. That was probably one of the worst NHL calls I've seen in a while.

    it's always seemed like the NHL has been against Canadian teams, especially under Bettman. This year it seems to be especially bad, maybe because their new poster boy went to a Canadian team when he was supposed to be in Buffalo or Arizona.

    Thank you for bringing up (if briefly) something I've been angry about. The Coaches Challenge allowing refs to mess up calls even worse than before. That Marian Hossa goal in the Blackhawks-Coyotes game, I was livid! Rightfully so, as a Blackhawks fan. You come within 50 feet of a goalie and you can get goalie interference. Then there's offsides calls. For example, Blues-Blackhawks game 2 when Lehtera was called offsides on the equalizer. I may be a Blackhawks fan but that was too close to change the call. I could go on and on but no one wants to hear me type a novel so I'll stop it here. If you want to hear more, reply. The list goes on and on :)

    A player loses a game for a team: "WTF! Run him out of town! This guy sucks!"
    A ref loses a game for a team: "Oh, ya kno, it's a fast sport, and it's tough for the poor guy to keep up, and it actually isn't even his fault you lost. The team that lost made mistakes X, Y and Z, the refs weren't responsible for those!"

    Great post. The refs have been a discussion point for me and my friends this season. I can't remember them being worse. They call nothing penalties some times, while letting egregious cross checks, slashes or even trips just go by the wayside. The inconsistency is maddening.
    I realize there's a level of discretion into how close to call a game, but they can't even keep it consistent within a period. And nobody in the NHL knows what goalie interference is. I just assume it's the opposite of whatever I think it is.
    I don't know why the refs are so horrible this season. Any guesses?

    • @rylesg74
      @rylesg74 8 років тому

      +philbert53 The reason is technology and the ability for fans to watch everything at 1/10th the speed 17 times over and over. OF COURSE you can see that penalty/goal/no goal/etc when you watch from home on TV with slow motion reply. Unfortunately, Officials don't have that luxury. Hell, just staying out of the way on the ice is a full time and exhausting job, let alone being in perfect position to make every single game during the course of a game. Wise up and try to understand just how difficult this job really is.

  • @johanericsson7309
    @johanericsson7309 6 років тому

    Imo, if the ref touches the puck and it CLEARLY affects the game, blow it dead, and have a face off! Those goals in the Montreal and Dallas games should never count! Might be hard to judge whether or not the ref being in the way affected it, but still better than those goals counting.

    This is still relevant.lol
    Only part I disagree with is that “refs justs need to get out of the way”. Im a ref for high school hockey, its hard to stay out of the way but we can read the play and get out of the way of where we think they are going to put the puck. The NHL refs obviously do this too and much better than I could ever do but sometimes they get in the way. The NHL is insanely fast, duh. Most of the time, a ref is in the way because they read it wrong or something unexpected happens that causes an unpredictable action by the puck or player.

  • @SCOEN
    @SCOEN 8 років тому +1

    Yes Steve the officials ARE apart of the game and if the puck hits them IT IS an ACCIDENT. No official purposely gets in the way of the puck, hockey is the fastest game on earth and the puck travels so fast it is hard for them to react. I am a soccer referee and I can't tell you how many times the ball has hit me because the ball moves faster than me. It is accident and it is unfortunate when it helps another team out but we are part of the play and unless you get rid of officials entirely there is no way of getting around a puck hitting an official. Sorry to break it to you

  • @jakobbauer5054
    @jakobbauer5054 8 років тому

    Can you imagine the amount of abuse officials (even good ones) take day in and day out? If that amount of abuse happened in a common 9-5 job, people would be fired. All the while officials are meant to be these emotionless, rule-enforcing automatons. Of course, they are meant to be objective and professional, but we have to remember that they are people who get rattled, flustered and likely sick and tired of the endless tide of thanklessness and abuse. Remember, without the officials we don't have a game.

    • @rylesg74
      @rylesg74 8 років тому

      +Jakob Bauer Thank you for this. I try to explain this all the time and people just don't seem to grasp it. No matter what, they will look to blame anyone or anything on their favorite team/player's shortcomings, and target #1 is the Officials. It's sad.

  • @cameronwoodcock706
    @cameronwoodcock706 8 років тому +1

    Having four officials on the ice instead of three, is only going to make them more vulnerable to getting hit with a puck. The three man system works fine, if you allow linesman to call minor penalties. The referee always gets stuck when the team cycles the puck, I can tell you from experience the three man system is much better than the four man system. Also the goal Anaheim scored against Edmonton on Tuesday had more goaltender interference than Hossa's waived off goal the other night. But at the end of the day the officials are a part of the game, and they make mistakes, and the teams have to overcome their mistakes instead of arguing about them. Finally no official should ever laugh at a coach when they get thrown out of a game, that is so uncalled for.

    • @keagan0000
      @keagan0000 8 років тому

      +Cameron Woodcock I agree that in minor hockey where the rinks are smaller, the 3 man system is better. However, with an NHL sized surface and the speed of todays game, if you had only one guy wearing the bands, he wouldn't be able to keep up with the play and would probably die of exhaustion. There's also countless times where the back official has caught some penalties that the first official had no chance of seeing. I think you definetely need 4-man system for NHL

    • @cameronwoodcock706
      @cameronwoodcock706 8 років тому

      Keagan Connell If you allow linesmen to call minor penalties that the referee missed, there is no need for two referees, as the lineman at the blue line is much closer to the action than the back referee, who is around the red-line. The back linesmen can cover for the referee on a fast break too, in a three man system, so the referee is always covered no matter where the puck is.

    • @keagan0000
      @keagan0000 8 років тому

      +Cameron Woodcock I understand how linesman cover referees but they don't even have the authority to blow the whistle if the puck goes in. they can only point and wait for the ref to arrive. Linesman never call minor penalties and that would change the entire game in a massive way. the point of a 3 or 4 man system is to divide the responsibility so better calls can be made. if you let linesman call penalties you have 3 or 4 referees on the ice. not 2 linesman and 1/3 referees

    • @cameronwoodcock706
      @cameronwoodcock706 8 років тому

      Keagan Connell
      I totally agree in that with the current rules the three man system would not function properly in the NHL or any professional league. But if the leagues were to give more power to linesman and allow them to call goals and penalties, a three man system would work in the NHL, and all other leagues.

    • @keagan0000
      @keagan0000 8 років тому

      But if linesman start calling penalties you have to rewrite minor hockey officiating from the ground up as well. Would be a huge unnecessary change. And linesman can already call goals, they just cant blow the play down. Other than covering for the referees, their vantage point would be from the blue line so why give them authority to call one from there?

    I have been watching hockey since 1959. I really thought I understood the rules. I really did. I no longer have any grasp of goalie interference. The Hawks had 2 goals taken away and I still have seen no visual evidence to show why? Panarin got a 2 hander on his ankles after scoring an empty net goal. Knocked him down and into the boards. Luckily he wasn't hurt. But the ref saw the whole play and Yandle didn't get a penalty. The Kris Letang call or lack of an call against Paquette is not even amusing. Normally I say hockey refs are by far the best and still are but come on wtf!!!! Please can we have a goalie interference seminar for the ref's and give the call back to Toronto.

    What about the Rangers Lightning game in Tampa where Henrik Lundqvist saved the puck but then, after the ref BLEW THE WHISTLE, Anton Stralman took a whack at it and the puck went in. Wouldn't the play have been blown dead with that whistle? Nope apparently not anymore because after the whistle blew the puck squeaked in and they reviewed it and called it a goal. The Rangers still won the game but come on! If that is a goal but Hossa's isn't then what league is this?

Why don't you blame professional players who hit officials? Why don't you make a video where you show how professional players who make millions of dollars just screw up the game? Why don't you say that a professional player who misses the empty net from a close distance should pay a fine?

    please talk about the refs picking and choosing what a penalty is and what isn't. I watched someone literally water ski on McDavid's jersey, saw someone force hall to give them a piggy back ride. my understanding of holding is when a player reaches out grabbing onto someone and impeding their progress. why the hell is that rule different every single game? the rules are written down in a book and basically haven't changed in many years.
    these are professional athletes out there, if they are going to take lazy penalties every game them penalize them. Get these professional athletes back to playing professional hockey the way it's meant to be played.
    don't get me wrong, refs will miss a penalty every now and then, i get that... but if someone is on a breakaway, and gets hauled down, and the refs don't call that because "it could interfere with the result of a game." then for the love of god let it. that player deserves to be penalized. the last few oiler games have been absolutely ridiculous.. Taylor hall got punched in the head 3 times and somehow that wasn't enough for hooking.
    Not only will it change the game for the better and create way higher skilled players, but it will help out with the "not enough goals" problem as well. And also maybe it will even make Wayne Gretzky and all the other old coots' records somewhat more reachable someday. (No disrespect to any of the old guys with records but holy hell it was easier back then!)

    Did anyone else see that goal that was kicked in the STLvTBL game the other night were Berglund clearly kicked the puck into the net, with a distinct kicking motion with 1:03 left in the 3rd which caused the Lightning to lose 2-1? Now, the ref on the ice dramatically waved it "no goal" but the officials in Toronto deemed that it was scored in legal fashion. It's not just the refs and linesmen, it's the league that needs some stiffening up when it comes to enforces their own rules.

    Lets not even mention anything else, the fact that Hedman got kicked out of that game is beyond ridiculous, unless the ref wasn't paying attention at all when the tampa bay lighting were playing (which is possible considering him in the way of the puck) he would know that if Hedman wanted to hit him, he would have been hit. You see a player shoot the puck somewhere in frustration basically every game. That puck doesn't even come close to the official. I am sorry I hate to be the guy that has these huge over reactions but that ref should lose his job, I don't know what else to say. He gets up with help and comes back, later on the player who boarded him earlier in that game does that shit again late in the game and Max Domi loses his shit and jumps him after that player had been goading the coyotes to fight between whistles from the bench. Gets his ass beaten and leaves, no penalty for him but Domi is suspended and now OEL is on IR.

    My guess, in reading all these short sided comments, is that NONE OF YOU HAVE EVER OFFICIATED A HOCKEY GAME...let alone know how to skate. Officiating hockey has got to be the hardest of all sports. We can't float in mid-air. We're human and do make mistakes, yes. That is true. But I ask you to try and understand just how tough it is out there. The advent of slow motion reply "made" Officials worse in the eyes of the fan. The fans have the luxury of re-watching slow motion reply on everything. The Officials DO NOT. How do people not understand that? A bang-bang play that happens in (literally) a split second is NOT the same thing as watching the replay 6 times from your couch or seat in the rink. We have to make call out there after watching the play happen at high speeds, all while trying our best not to get in the way. I know Officials are easy scapegoats...always have been, probably always will, because fans will look for any other excuse to blame the failures of their beloved team/player on rather then THEY made a bad/dumb play. Nope, gotta be the refs fault. Psshhh...get out there and let's just see how you do. I guarantee that if every hockey fan attempted to officiate a high level game, they would shut up instantly....but I'm guessing many of you have never even skated before...

    Annndddd it's worse this year. In the game last night between the Blackhawks and Rangers, there were two goals/non-goals affected by whistles. The Hawks shoot the puck, Lundqvist seems to make the stop, the puck trickles through, and the ref blows his whistle before the puck crosses the line. They call it a goal anyway.
    Then, the Rangers and Hawks scramble for the puck in front of Crawford's net, and the puck is in the net. Immediately, the ref blows his whistle and declares he meant to blow play dead before the puck crossed the line. No goal.
    No clue how you can make these opposite calls in the SAME GAME

  • @Bisonrulz16

    I think the biggest point recently is the Francois St Laurent situation, in terms of the stare down to make them take the penalty. That is absolutely the incorrect thing to do, especially joking with a person afterwards, gives off a bad message.
    The thing is - I think there's a reason ref's in every sport are being perceived to be becoming worse. It could be a coincidence and it could be happening, but I think that fan's perception is getting worse because there are more and more ways for a referee's call to be criticised now. All games are televised, we have vine and streamable for short clips of games to highlight bad calls, we have public forums where everything is discussed often so even if everyone but one person missed it everyone knows anyway.
    The point I'm making is, it wouldn't matter if the ref's this year are better than the ref's in 1999, they are perceived to be worse because every call they make can be scrutinised by every spectator with a multi-angle, multi-speed view of what's going on and it can be posted on public forum. In the past, you spoke to your mates about how you thought they got the call wrong over a beer and then probably forgot about it, now the mistake is immortalised in 4 different angles with slow mo.
    The ref's are probably as good as last year and the year before, but it probably doesn't seem like it.

  • @schreck0137

    The Penguins game against the Lightning today on Feb. 20 had horrible officiating.
    I'm a Penguins fan and I might be biased but the calls in this game were horrible.
    The refs completely missed a high stick on Phil Kessel were his nose was cut, at one point Tyler Johnson fell and took the legs out from under Kris Letang, no call, and two incidents were Tampa could have been called for too many men but just weren't.
    The worst of it all was at the end:
    8 minutes left in the 3rd and Pittsburgh is down by 2. Kris Letang is getting interfered with by Cedric Paquette and Paquette ends up slashing and breaking Letang's stick. In the ensuing play going the other way Letang hits Paquette and Paquette's hand ends up right in Letang's face where he loses it and Letang decides to pick it up and use it. They then call Letang for a 2 minute minor for a play that absolutely never gets called and give him an extra 2 for arguing over the stupid call.
    We should have had a power play but instead lose our best defenseman for 4 minutes and lost the game cause refs can't do their job correctly.

    Refs have been subpar this season for sure. It's really been frustrating watching this season. But St. Laurent showed up Maurice is reminds me a whole bunch of the Umpire in the MLB playoffs who showed up Tulowitzki and gave him the boot. Hey steve, other than St. Laurent staring down Paul Maurice(which i agree is very unprofesional), how do you propose the officials don't get in the way of the puck? its a fast game and you can't always anticipate how the puck is going to bounce or where the player infront of you is gonna turn and shoot the puck.(Though i agree the p.k incident was just lazyness from that linesman)

  • @jerredbapty
    @jerredbapty 8 років тому

    If NHL officials actually stuck to the Referee Guidelines on positioning set by the OMHA and the OWHA, there would be much fewer instances of a ref being hit with the puck. Every example you show is of an official completely out of position or just blatantly not paying attention to the game. As far as Paul Maurice, it sucks to take abuse as an official from anyone, but the ref should have kicked Paul out in the second period if he was going to do so. Stralman should have been kicked out of that game right then. Destroys not one but two Jets on the same shift. The ref's need to be held accountable for their own reactions, and there should be discipline for refs who overreact to situations. Hedman did not deserve an ejection, and that official should be disciplined for his lack of control. Ref's are running wild with their power and need to be held accountable for their actions. These are my opinions as an official, as I ref in the OHA.

  • @patrickmalone5994
    @patrickmalone5994 8 років тому

    Although I agree with you in the Maurice incident, the play moves very fast especially in the NHL, and the officials know that, look at their faces every time they get hit, their gazes go down immediately, they're not proud, they make mistakes, like all humans. Trust me, getting hit puts you down enough, you don't need videos like this putting you down also, Sportsnet seems to have this anti ref propaganda circulating recently and I for one don't like it. Stick to critiquing the players and leave the officials alone.

    I understand it is not an easy job. I understand that it's easy to miss calls. But this year I have noticed the most inconsistent calls league wide. I not only watch my team play, but pretty much any game that is airing on tv. It is almost like they decide which team they like at the beginning of the game, and purposely miss calls for the other. How can a big hit be a good hit one day, and then a "dirty" hit the next. I feel for the players in the NHL because it's so hard to play your game when you're scared of possibly costing your team a win because you don't know what the Ref is thinking.
