  • As preventative maintenance remove the lower plastic part behind the front wheel arch to free leaves, dirt and debris from behind the wheel arch and fender on your 2017-2022 Mazda CX-5. This should prevent the drain hole from being clogged and prevent rust and corrosion from forming in the area.

Wanted to give some tips to those trying to install this. Just as some mentioned when you're removing the plastic "chunk" piece from the car, I suggest taking the time to pull some of the fender wheel area a bit to clear out any debris. Unfortunately CX5's are prone to collecting debris (leaves, mud, dry dirt) that travels and gets stuck in the fender area. In my particular 2018 CX5 the bottom pin was missing and once I removed the plastic "chunk" piece I noticed some leaves,.I dug my hand upward and a TON of debris came out. The leaves traveled as high as where the metal clip you have to attach inside wheel fender. This is for the front area. As for the rear it was just a little bit dry dirt.
Apparently the debris comes from the window cowl area and travels downward.

This is something you gotta do every fall or your wheel wells could rust out in a few years. The debris come in through the wiper well and blow down through openings on the sides of the engine bay. My mechanic suggested jamming big sponges on those openings to help keep out most of the leaves and moisture.

That clip would come out easier if the tire was turned all the way to the right. A trim clip removal tool from Harbor Freight would help also.

Suggest silicone paste on trim clips and prongs of grommet, so they pop off next year without snapping. Baby that grommet.

Btw, this mazda shown is 2nd gen. As the clip is separate. For first gen cx5, those 2016 and below, is different as the clip holding the gunk and leaves are one unit with the trim. Kinda sucks

Do those leaves you cleared drain from around the windshield or under the windshield wipers or are they from just getting stuck under the wheel trim when driving? I have a current model CX-5. I was pulling leaves out from the hole under the windshield wiper cowl and a couple leaves fell underneath the plastic. Where do they go? Is there a drain or channel or do they just sit there underneath the plastic?

Thanks for this vid. I am curious, what did you do when the clip on the other side broke? I believe mine broke due to heavy snow I have no idea how that trim got loose on mine.

Its still held on, not looking at it now but I think just by the little plastic clips. It looks fine although if you touch it it does appear a little loose. I imagine eventually it will fall off and I was planning to bite the bullet and buy the replacement part

Hello, this molding broke on my CX5 after the axle broke while driving. I have not taken it off. In addition to the clips possibly being damaged I believe the part that holds this molding is also damaged. Do you know if the part that holds this small molding is an individual part or part of the plastic arched molding that goes around the wheel? Thank you much in advance!

I believe it is an individual part you can order. I dont have the part number but you can ask the dealer parts or i think I found some diagrams online which tell you all the part numbers
