No athletic program, no discipline, no book He just sat in the backseat swearing he'd seek revenge But he jumped into the furnace Singing old songs we loved
+Gianmarco “asgard” Di Giuseppe taking a record....a time-capsule and and just being rude...that's ignorant...please...speak up...and keep it, researchable
This song is another wonderful piece of Bowie's genius. The mid section 'no athletic program, no discipline no books, we just sat in the back seat' where his voice becomes distorted as it speeds up is utterly sublime and you can almost feel the person going mad
This used to be my hated song in the album and then it ended one of my favorites. I'm revisiting this album again and this shit still rocks. 🤘 Scream like a babyyyyyyyy
David Bowie, an expert creating an atmosphere( in this case a dystopic one). He was always good at that, as it said on the sleeve of "The Man Who Sold the World" album (1970)..."Bowie's music insists on it's own reality"
What you hear in this track is total freedom to play with vocals albeit not perfect in range or pitch. The joy not to feel restricted or to conform. Tony Visconti let Bowie mess around as an an artist should!
When I mix Scary Monsters down to CD for the car I replace Fashion with Heroes and it makes it a better album. Heroes is right in line with Scream Like a Baby and others on this masterpiece
Well I wouldn't buy no merchandise And I wouldn't go to war And I mixed with other colours But the nurse doesn't care And I hide under blankets Or did I run away I really can't remember Last time I saw the light of day But I remember Sam Because he was like me [Chorus] Scream like a baby Sam was a gun And I never knew his last name And we never had no fun [Verse 2] Well they came down hard on the faggots And they came down hard on the street They came down harder on Sam And they all knew he was beat He was thrown into the wagon Blindfolded, chains And they stomped on us And took away our clothes and things And pumped us full of strange drugs And oh I saw Sam falling Spitting in their eyes But now I lay me down to sleep And now I close my eyes Now I'm learning To be a part of soc-society
Virginia viola isn’t it strange that just lately listening to so many David Bowie songs you’re thinking “ he was literally writing about 2020.” 😱🤯 saviour machine, Life on Mars, there are many more
his later stuff was less flashy and less about imagery and more reflective and intellectual. I feel bad for anyone who hasn't listened to Reality, Heathen, 1. Outside, Blackstar. Unmissable works.
@@LamelKendrick I hear what you are saying. Having been a fan from the very early 70's I just felt his work lost direction & authenticity after "Monsters." I think I've still got the vinyl of the one after, "Tonight" I think it was called, but aside from one very good track, it's not a great album. He then got into all that "Tin Machine" stuff in the 80's. I have got "Heathen" & you are right it's an OK album. I can't listen to "Black Star" although I have really liked the tracks I've heard off it but I just find the whole thing, & in particular the videos, quite depressing & distressing. 😕
it's relative most of his albums are very close in quality, they are exceptionally clever. So it depends what you are experiencing at the time you hear an album and how it has a lasting impact on you. It would be a contrived argument to pretend there is some notable disagreement. For my money Scary Monsters is only a mid tier bowie album but that means it's still amazing.@@pup1008
duude I think about that and crack up everytime I listen to this track and have no one to tell the jokes as no one know both this album and the gang weed memes
Bowie was up against Punk when this came out & he really picked up on the anarchic vibe of those times with a lot of the tracks being intentionally & beautifully sung & played out of key! 👍🇬🇧
I was thinking by myself that the chorus reminds me of Ava Cherry's 'I'm a Lazer". Also, Bowie sang it in a fragment of The Young American sessions. Thanks a lot!
What is that even supposed to mean ? Outside (1995), Heathen (2002), Reality (2003), The Next Day (2013), Blackstar (2016) and even Earthling (1997) are all at least very solid albums, some of them are even masterpieces
He is dead and he still keeps telling it like it is I'm surprised the govt did not banned him.....govt to idiot to understand Bowies lyrics...or are they???
I'M "ROCKER", AND BOWIE MADE A FULL RANGE OF KINDS OF MUSIC, I LOVE HIM SO MUCH, BUT "SCARY MONSTERS..." IS THE BEST "POP"-AND OTHER STYLES RECORD OF THE WORLD, AS WELL "STRANGE, ELECTRONIC AND PECULIAR, I GUESS " THE TOP OF THE POP"... RATHER HARD TO GET CLOSE TO... Max the atomic rooster.. Italy
Amazing what Bowie could get out of a song from 1975 he wrote for Ava Cherry... listen to the not very good first version: ua-cam.com/video/bcbg8PCxwnI/v-deo.html
It harkens to 'All The Madmen". Recorded in NYC 4 years after the Son of Sam serial killer, and months before John Lennon's assassination. After Lennon's murder, I would not listen to the track. One reason I think this entire record is under appreciated.
I don't much care for the chorus or 'middle sections' of this song - they're pretty lame imo. But the verse is right at the absolute pinnacle of rock music ever.....
Oddly that a guy who has done so much for gay, trans, racial issues would now be cancelled by the "Woke" because of lyrics in this and some of his other songs. Very strange times and Bowie prophesied it all in his music.
I love the way he can't bring himself to say 'society' without almost throwing up.

Absolute genius!
In the same style as this song, I think Bauhaus did something like that too, but I can't remember which song.
@@matju2 They probably copied his genius 😉
And it rocks
One of my most favorite Bowie's songs. This always reminds me of "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest ".
This used to be my hated song in the album and then it ended one of my favorites. I'm revisiting this album again and this shit still rocks. 🤘

King Bowie 👑👑👑
A song that only a pure genius can write and sing like that. The whole album is as perfect as the creator.
Yes 👍 genius album scary Monsters ! and teenage wildlife , Bowie,6 years today the dead ! ashes to ashes .
They don't play this one on the radio! I think Bowie remains a mystery to many.

Something I’ve been wrapping my mind around since I first stared up at the Ziggy Stardust poster on Uncle Frank’s bedroom wall when I was a kid😎

That's what you called having a pair in the forehead!!!! Unlike other artists that die singing what they dont want...like elvis
Genius genius genius
One of his best songs from one of his best albums
This is just insane quality, Bowie's so good it's unbelievable! X
This and Ashes to Ashes are my 2 favourite tracks on the Scary Monsters album.
ONES OF THE BEST ON SCARY MONSTERS ❤️
I totally agree
Ashes to ashes is my favorite, long live Bowie
When I mix Scary Monsters down to CD for the car I replace Fashion with Heroes and it makes it a better album.
Heroes is right in line with Scream Like a Baby and others on this masterpiece
Scary Monsters is my favourite Bowie album!
the rock sounds better every year
Awesome but no many coments .Yet , a very beautiful song .Thanks Mr Bowie
I really fell in love with this song the first time i heard it
I'll miss Ziggy forever
Well I wouldn't buy no merchandise
And I wouldn't go to war
And I mixed with other colours
But the nurse doesn't care
And I hide under blankets
Or did I run away
I really can't remember
Last time I saw the light of day
But I remember Sam
Because he was like me
[Chorus]
Scream like a baby
Sam was a gun
And I never knew his last name
And we never had no fun
[Verse 2]
Well they came down hard on the faggots
And they came down hard on the street
They came down harder on Sam
And they all knew he was beat
He was thrown into the wagon
Blindfolded, chains
And they stomped on us
And took away our clothes and things
And pumped us full of strange drugs
And oh I saw Sam falling
Spitting in their eyes
But now I lay me down to sleep
And now I close my eyes
Now I'm learning
To be a part of soc-society

Favourite song on the album. ...I think? It's No Game Pt. 2 is up there, also...
The whole album is a masterpiece, every track. 'Ashes to Ashes' is one of Bowie's greatest singles.
And I mixed with other colors, but the nurse doesn't care....

Contrast the lyrics of this song with the equally poignant "All the Madmen".

The song is a rework of the Ava Cherry song "I am a lazer" . I think Bowie wrote that song for her sonots fitting that he would do that

Those groups can dish it out but can't take it. Pathetic.
WOKE
why would they cancel bowie for this song? It's literally about discrimination/persecution from my point of view
No, the "woke" wouldn't cancel Bowie for this song, he's literally singing about what they want to hear.
"Progressiveism" is like a drug to the "woke" mentality. You always have to chase the greater high, and anything less is a disappointment.
Chorus needs a rewrite ...love verse and bridge or breakdown, but the chorus breaks this song.
You're giving a genius songwriting advice
Oh please 😆😆😆😆
