    Hi Steven. I was wondering about an update on your older DPF cleaning videos.
    I have two BMW's E91 and E61 both with N47 engine and both have a few issues with DPF. The E91 has the dpf symbol after start and then dissapears. On ista the backpressure says is too much at about 300-400mbar. Other than that it runs fine. Request regen from ista is not possible. as soon as i erase the code, it reappers on contact. And request regen can't be done with error codes.
    On the E61 dpf symbol appeared, I've requested regen in DDE, I added a generic liqui-molly dpf cleaner and I took a trip on the highway fully loaded at 3000-3500 rpm for about 5hours (long trip to seaside, then another 5hours a week later on the return trip). The backpressure dropped from 200-300 to max 200mbar.
    Both cars have in the 200000-300000km.
    On the E61 i have the glow plug relay bad (i will change it.. i know it affects DPF regeneration cycle), disabeld EGR (as for regen.. it is actually beneficial to increase the temperature in the chamber), and a faulty O2 sensor? (the exhaust temp before cat is -50degrees.. as far as i know, the tempereature is read from the O2 sensor. Right?). So i plan to fix some issues on e61 but other than that the forced regen on the dpf did the trick for now. In the future i will consider cleaning it, but firs i want to fix the E91 that is more urgent in terms of DPF cleaning.
    Now on the E91.. here i plan to clean the DPF. So in the end a prewash in a dishwasher tablet solutin, and then a few baths in industrial vinegar?. Time alloted can be in the 1week range so there should not be any issue regarding the longer time needed for vinegar.. but at least will be less harmful to the stainless steel than pool acid. Any update or recommended solutions for DIY chemical cleaning DPF?
    Another point I'd like to ask: how effective was your cleaning? Any damage done to the DOC? Does the temperature increases in the DOC as before?
    Doing some research.. some other newer DPF+DOC have a slighly alkaline substrate for the DOC materials.. so in theory that can be damaged by any acidic batch rendering the DOC useless.. and the regen is mostly based from the highly exothermic reactions in the DOC that makes the tempereatures increase so much in the DPF.. so if the DOC is affected is a BIG problem. So did you encountered any of this on the old E series N47 DOC+DPF on 3-5series?

    • @StevenBTuner
      @StevenBTuner  Рік тому

      Hi, it sounds like you're on top of things. If you go with different acid and concentration then it will be a new experiment, and I don't know how it will go. The 20 liters of 6% HCl solution for 30 minutes has been tried by lots of people with good results. Your E61 should definitely be happier with those things fixed (the exhaust temperature is a different sensor).

    Thanks again Steven for such helpful video By extraordinary coincidence I had code 71 when the red car lift warning came up on my 2012 E91 As you found my rear pad wear lead was damaged, in my case through coming into contact with the drive shaft. I replaced the lead but the red lift warning light remains on. Does this need to be extinguished via dedicated BMW software or is there a DIY solution I would be very grateful for any advice Thanks

      Hi, it sounds like a previous owner has had the side markers coded out. I don't have personal experience with that modification because the European cars don't have side markers, so I would recommend getting hold of someone who has done it before. Depending on how it was done, it may be necessary to re-flash the module completely back to the factory stock settings.

      @StevenBTuner  Рік тому

      Hi, there are quite a few 'undefined' codes that require you to connect an OBD2 code reader to give you a better idea of what is going on. Also be aware that an unresponsive module will not throw up a DTC code, so you may have to try and connect to each module one at a time until you find the dead one. All the best in tracking it down, and it would be great to hear what the issue turns out to be.

      Hi, I am in Denmark where the taxes make even old cars stupidly expensive - so keeping a diesel car until around 400,000kms is entirely normal. I would say that after 400,000 it is usually not economically viable to rebuild the engine or swap in a lower km engine, but there are plenty of folk who do and keep these cars going until around 550,000kms. I am now at 365,000 and thinking that it might be time for a change :-)
