  • The second moment of Gordon Jacob's "Little Concerto" for double bass and string orchestra (unaccompanied). Recorded in a practise room after a concert.
Here I'm using an Aquila HU unsplit lamb gut G string, light gauge. The idea behind Aquila's HU range is to replicate the traditional manufacture of gut strings in historic Italy; it is believed that unsplit gut strings possessed superior acoustic and mechanical properties in comparison to those made with gut strips.
Not only is this a versatile and energetic string for period music, it also handles A=440Hz tuning very well, retaining tuning stability and sounding suitable even for contemporary music such as this concerto.
The sound is bright and pure under the ear, hopefully this comes across to the listener too(!)
