I feel like this video (and half of the industry tbh) completely forgets the fact that "indie" was originally supposed to mean "without a publisher". I guess we're just returning to those times.
You are absolutely right, I should really say “small developer”” or something like that, I am so used to using the word “indie” it kind off lost the original meaning to me :)
The problem with this definition is if Nintendo self-publishes a Mario game, is that an indie game? Ok, that's too big. But let's talk smaller studios such as Larian or Supergiant with huge budgets. Supergiant used to be called indie, but their games have only grown in scope that would be unfeasible compared to most indies. I think as a category, low budget small developers seems to be the generally accepted interpretation of "indie". Even if that means they have a publisher, e.g. Balatro, Stardew Valley, Omori, etc.
Yeah I think this makes perfect sense, I absolutely think about “indie” as a small studio that is not necessarily independent. But it is also true that in the last couple of years, the definition lost a lot of it’s meaning because even some studios with multi million budget projects and teams of nearly 100 people still market themselves as “indie”. And that is just it, companies started using the term as a marketing strategy and I think that is why some people became a bit less forgiving when it comes to its use.
Great Video! I remembered a bit of a talk we have some months ago. I'm cheering that all this hard times are making games better and yours is gonna be a gem! Keep up the good work!
I haven't even thought about this. It's literally not occurred to me. If I speak from gamer's perspective, there's always games you go back to if you really wanted to play them or you know they're good having heard reviews, etc. There's always games releasing, lots of them on a daily basis. Thinking about that is pointless unless you very directly compete for the same target audience but even then, sometimes it's like, "Oh wow, I've got 2 of Elden Ring." Just focus on making a good game and rest should fall in place on it's own. It's very rare to see an actually good game not do well enough unless you're looking to make millions in which case, indie game development is the wrong career and business to go with.
Keep doing your thing , keep working on your game , and release when you think its right. Quitting should only be an option when you feel like you dont enjoy and or not fulfilled by developing games. Dont let the money corrupt you. Make your game fun and polished! And I have no doubt it will ser some form of success
As someone who really wants to get into game development, I also am hoping that this a good time for all these games to just cook until its safe to come out 😂
Keep posting dude this channel is underrated and I think more love is gonna come to it soon
Aww, thank you so much! I really appreciate that!

I guess I should have written “Should you quit” I think the question is getting misconstrued xD
Yes stop making games already
😅
🤣The only way to stop making games is to stop making humans
I wish all people who are in tech would get banned from the internet for questions like these
Yes, anyone who question anything I have strong opinions on should get banned. 101%
