- Luv watching you develop the upholstered piece. In the near future, could you show how to install the support hinges since they complete the storage ottoman ??? Thanx 4 sharing.
Hey! Thank you for watching and for your comment, it means a lot 😊👍🏻 Of course - next time I complete a storage ottoman I will show the process of attaching the hinges for you! Thanks again 😊
Very very nice job
Thank you so much for watching and for your comment 😊👍🏻
can i ask how thick the liner fabric should ideally be for a perfect finish?
you are truly inspiring me to start upholstering. love watching you.
Hi Julia! I used just standard black lining fabric for the inside...nothing too special 😊👍🏻 good luck with your project!
What kind of hinges do you use? And how do you know the lid will open properly with the hinges on the inside?
Hi Adrian! I use cabinet/ door cranked hinges and gas hinge lid supports. It’s trial and error getting the lid in the exact right place for it to shut flush.
I have nearly finished my ottoman and i just need to line the inside\outside base, attach some legs i got on Amazon, plus install the gas lift hinges that you linked below. I just want to know what type/size of hinges did you screw into the lid/back of ottoman?
Hi Star! I used box hinges (also for cabinets and doors) you can find them on Amazon too and the ones I used were around 2 inches long. I hope that helps!
Awesome work as usual, I've watch this tutorial since you posted it and maybe a hundred times after that. I just finished my very first one and I'm pleased with the finished product ☺ thanks for everything that you post....one question though, what type of wood do you use and how thick is it. Continued blessings to you and your future endeavours
Hi Kimba! Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. I’m so happy you’re pleased with your finished product, well done!! I usually use 18mm MDF for something like this.
@@faceliftinteriors thank you my dear. Never used MDF before but I think I'll give it a try as it's half the cost of half inch ply . It's over $400 in my country so it's proving to be extremely difficult to do any projects at all and having to purchase everything else to do any work. Keep on putting out those awesome videos 🙏🏾
Firstly I managed to do my headboard thanks to you!
Now onto the ottoman, What hinges did you use? Not the pressured ones the gold ones?
Congratulations on the headboard!! I’m glad I was some help 😊 The hinges I used were cabinet or door hinges and were around 2 inches in size. Hope this helps!!
Thanks for this great video - it’s the 1st of yours I’ve watched and I’ve now subscribed.
Please I REALLY need to know how the wooden base was attached - if you just attach it on to what you’ve already upholstered, won’t the raw edges be visible?
Thanks!
Hi Kate - thank you so much for subscribing, your support is really appreciated 😊🙏🏻 so the base was a separate piece of wood that I covered in black bottoming fabric and slotted into the bottom of the box (it sits on the wooden struts/blocks across the bottom) and then I also put black bottoming on the bottom of the box to cover the struts so you couldn’t see them if you turn the box over. I hope that makes sense!
Nice job, Thanks you for a great video! One question though, did you leave 0,5 cm of the foam also on the top of the box?
Yes I did, to give a nice rounded edge. Otherwise it would look too flat 👍🧵✂️⛏️📐
Can you cover the box with one piece of fabric with one seam or is it best to do it in sections like you did? Thank you, love watching you work
Hi Yvonne! You could technically do it with one seam. I like to do it with the four seams so all the corners match and there’s a seam on each corner but you could also do it with one 👍🏻
How much fabric do you add on to compensate for the foam on the sides please? Enjoyed the video, thank you.
Depends on what size foam you use on top. I used 2.5" so I added 2.5" + the wood which was 1/2" so allow an extra 1" so 4" total each side.
Hope that helps. Thank you for watching and for your comment 😊
Is it ok to use Gorilla brand adhesive spray?
Very cool❤
Thanks Ailene 😊🙏🏻
I have the storage box already but my puppy chewed one corner of the box down to the wood 😡 so thanks for the video! Ima try to recover mine now.
Those damn puppies 🤣 no worries, glad to be of some help. Good luck with your project Brian 😊👍🏻
Great work, really helpful for my project. May I ask what was it that you placed ontop of the foam, the name of the thin layer of fabric. Thanks 🙏
Hi there! Sorry for the delayed reply. I place Dacron or wadding over the foam 👍🏻
@@faceliftinteriors thank you !! Keep it up
Quick question
I love how you first did the sewing then fitted it over the wooden structure
Can i do the same and still proceed to do diamond tufting on three faces of the ottoman?
Hi there! Thank you for watching and for your comment. If you wanted to do stab buttons, then yes but if you wanted to do deep buttoning/ diamond tufting then no. The fabric has to be loose to allow folding of the diamonds etc so it wouldn’t work for that unfortunately.
I need one like this in my living room because its safe alot of space
It saves alot of space i mean
Hey!! They’re really handy for storage and extra seating! We have one in our living room that we keep our son’s toys in 😊👍🏻
I'm Impressed
Hi mate thanks for this. I had a chippy over and got him to make me an ottoman storage box so he has put the base and lid on. Do you think it would be possible to upholster it with those on or easier to just remove it?
Also, how comes you're working in inches?
Subbed btw....
Hi mate. Thanks for the support really appreciate it.
I would put the hinges on before any fabric or foam. Make sure the lid opens and closes nicely and then mark exactly where the hinges sit so after it's all Upholstered you know exactly where to screw the hinges back in. Then take apart and Upholster. Hope that makes sense?! We work in inches as the seam allowance has always been 0.5" and it's easier to measure. Most companies still use inches for Upholstery 👍
Just subbed to you because of this video 🙂!, plus i'm going to make this for my bedroom.
I have already ordered some of the items from Amazon, and i'm of to B&Q to get my MDF cut to size later today. I just wondered if you have a link for the blue foam around the sides/ the top of the ottoman that you recommend? Thanks in advance! 🙂
Hey! Thank you for subbing, its really appreciated and I'm glad you found the video helpful.
I would go to an upholstery supplier for your foam (I believe you may be able to get it online too). I use GB foam for mine.
@@faceliftinteriors
You are welcome!😊👍🏽
Do you mean GB Foam Direct?
From what I have seen on there site they cut to size, it's not sold by the role which is what I would prefer.
I have a harbadashery shop local to me I will pop in there this weekend/ keep looking on Amazon.
Where do you get you material
Can you glue the interior fabric to the wood or can that cause a problem. Thanks from across the pond.
Yes you could, but allow the glue to partially dry otherwise it will show through the fabric. 👍📎📐🧵⛏️✂️
What are the measurements of the box?
Just curious, why did you not use a metal tack strip so you wouldn't have to staple the bottom of the top on the black fabric? Also on the inside of the bottom of the box, I would have added a separate upholstered bottom, Something like a 1/4 inch thick with the same black fabric on it and that would have hidden all of the staples in the bottom. I like how it turned out. Good work.
Hi there! Thanks so much for your comment!! I didn’t use the metal rack strip as it was just the inside of the box, which was going to be used to store bedding etc so the inside wouldn’t really be seen. But that’s definitely a good idea if you want to keep all of the staples hidden! I did add a separate upholstered bottom that i slotted in at the end but unfortunately didn’t get any footage of it 🙈 thanks so much for commenting - I love hearing feedback from other upholsterers 😊👍🏻
@@faceliftinteriors I like your channel. There is not enough content out there for upholsterers to learn from so it's much appreciated. My father is the actual upholsterer in our family. He has owned a shop for 40+ years and I was able to work with him for a bit. What I want to do is more furniture type upholstery. Sadly in our area, it's cheaper to buy new furniture than to have furniture recovered or custom-built. Anyway, thank you for your channel.
Thank you!! I don’t claim to be the worlds best upholsterer and there’s always something new to learn but I saw the lack of content when I was trying to learn more so thought I’d make videos to help others learn too! It sounds like your dad taught you well 😊 I have that issue too as everyone buys cheap these days so there’s no point in spending the money reupholstering cheap furniture!!
What do call that white thing fabric glued on the foam?
Hi! Thanks for the sub 😀👍
Its called 'Dacron' or 'wadding' and some places call it 'batting'
I love that staple gun. What type is it? I am in the U. S. Thanks
Thanks for watching! It’s an Orion ‘Long nose’ staple gun 😊👍🏻
Or did you mean the pin gun at the beginning?
Hi. I can't find the video on squaring off the fabric?
ua-cam.com/video/MKp13784M_c/v-deo.html
Hi there ,it's at the beginning of this video. Thanks for watching 👍😁
what size hinges did you use please
Hi Maria, they were roughly 2inch hinges and I used three of them. Hope that helps
@@faceliftinteriors sorry ment the two side gas hinge to hold open
Hi Maria, these were standard kitchen cabinet door gas hinges. You want to make sure you buy the correct strength hinge for the weight of the lid. Our MDF Wood was 12mm so didn’t need overly strong hinges. Usually I go for N60 to N80.
What are the measurements of the ottoman?
Pro.
That’s very kind, thank you! And thank you for watching 😊🙏🏻
Can you sit on it? Will it hold body weight?
Hi Ruben - yea we have one at home and it’s regularly used to sit on 😊👍🏻
Did I miss the bottom install? I'm sure the closing fabric is not sturdy enough to handle alot of items.
Use platform lining for the inside as it's Stronger than bottoming fabric. 🙏😊📎📐⛏️🧵✂️
dimensions Plz ?
what are the measurements of the box
Hi! You can make these boxes whatever measurements you like - this one was approximately 150cm length, 40cm depth and 50cm height.
Could you be more specific about the measurements of each piece cut to make the box?
Did u made any upholstery ottoman with storage?
This one is! 👍⛏️✂️📐📎🧵

Thank you! 😀👍

Thanks you so much! 😊👍🏻

Lol can't be bothered. How much are you selling it ready-made?
🤣 it depends where you are in the UK. I deliver to areas near my workshop 😊👍🏻 if you’re not local, there are plenty of upholsterers around to make one for you!
You should change the title this is not for beginners
Most definitely not.
My man! I couldn't understand anything you were saying. And that was in the first minute and thirty two seconds, also you're speaking too damn fast. Everyone hears and comprehends differently. Please keep that in mind. If this is because you are on a serious time schedule to get your content out then give it time. PLEASE.
Apologies! This is an old video of ours - newer ones I’ve tried to slow it down 👍🏻
Is it ok to use Gorilla brand adhesive spray?
Hi Siren, I’ve never used it so wouldn’t want to advise. Upholstery spray adhesive is pretty inexpensive and works great 😊 👍🏻
