Looks good. If there’s concern for bleeding of paint a quick coat of satin clear can help seal up pores, then sand and use the paint to fill in the engrave.

The oil really does lift the image out! Luvvit!
Got me curious now :)
Would engraving on the end grain work? Old style wood prints were engraved, in reverse, on end grain for durability.
