- rv-mobile-servi... Testing 7 pin plug on a travel trailer the easy way. The seven pin plugs are often problematic, but here's an easy way to test the trailer end of the plug.

Cannot thank you enough for this video, helped me to separate truck from trailer, not take to shop and fixed it myself!
Once I found out trailer was ok by jumping connections, figured it was the truck, found out it was just the trailer 25 amp fuse that had blown.
Should have just started at fuse box in engine bay instead of replacing 7 prong plugs on truck and trailer. But needed to be replaced anway.
Once again, great instruction and saved me a lot of money!!
Anything other than this video is a waste of time on this subject matter, precise and to the point is what you have here.
This is absolutely the best way to teach something!
It doesn't take 15 minutes of talking, this guy explained the entire thing in a couple of minutes!
Thank you so much!!
Got it and all in under 2 minutes. He’s gets right to point and he is very clear.
I love it. This was exactly the same question I had. Where does the power from the battery get connected into the trailer when it's outside of the 7 blade socket?
Thank you very much for a good explanation. I have been chasing down a trailer brake bug, and couldn't figure out if it was the truck side, or the trailer side. This helped me test the trailer in isolation, and I was able to find a bad power connection going to one of the trailer brakes. Fixed up, thank you so much.
Thank you very much. you got me out of trouble! my step father accused me of not wiring his cargo trailer correctly. (He was mad) Right side would not blink or brake. Had running light on that side. I told him I wanted to test his truck connection and he told me he just had it tested and it was good. He got offended when I told him I wanted to test it before condemning my trailer wiring. Upon testing it, the green wire connection failed the test. Test light with him watching. (right blinker and brake) He proceeded to eat crow. 😉
All this after I had him cancel his appt. with a company to wire it. I told him I would save him a few hundred.
There's nothing like a little technical know-how to solve a minor electrical problem. That your father in law saw his error, and admitted to it, to his son in law of all persons, makes him a very, very smart man. That's right, being able to see your own mistakes and learn from them is sign of much intelligence. Looks good on you for having spotted the error in the wiring. Cheers!
Excellent diagram and instructions!! Do you ever come across a situation where a truck's plug does not correspond to standard wiring? I have a 08 F250 and something is up!!
This advice was awesome. So I have a unique case. First, I got a 7-pin tester for my pick-up and it clearly shows my trailer brakes don't work (or are intermittent). Great, I'll have the dealership fix that. But when trying to confirm the brakes worked on my 5th wheel I had an odd situation. While I was able to confirm that the turn signals and trim lights work using the wire but when I tried to do the brake the 15-amp fuse on my wire blew. I swapped it out and tried again and that blew as well. I happened to check my pickup (2017 2500 Deisel) and the fuse for the brakes are 30-amp. I swapped the fuse for a 30-amp and tried and I don't see anything. I see a spark occasionally but the brake lights don't come on.
What could cause this? Is it possible that not only is my trailer brake system on the truck needs service but the camper itself may have a short of some sort with the brakes?
That is the way I like it. Short and to the point....Very good video
Hi Guy, thank you for your videos. I have a new 7 pin connection to my camper trailer. Using your instructions above i have power from the battery. when I connect the test wire none of my lights come on? What is the cure?
hello do you know what i could try i lost my running lights on my trailer but everything else works i checked my fuse and it was blown i replaced it then in worked when i turned my truck on when i turned it off i assumed it was good but next morning it was blown again so i replaced it again left the truck on for 5 minutes and it worked fine turned truck off following morning went to drive it the fuse was blown so i looked at my 7 pin on the truck it was bent i fixed it and replaced the fuse and it worked next morning same issue i put the trailer on my other truck and the running light don't work but everything else is fine so makes me assume its the trailer wiring do you know where to start also on my main truck now when i replace the fuse and crank the engine the fuse instantly blows it no longer stays running i drove with no trailer and fuse connected and nothing happened so i believe me truck wiring is good or do should i check something else on my truck ??
Excellent video, concise and easy to understand. Thank you!!!
Great video, one quick question. On my 2013 RAM 1500 I'm using my 7 pin plug to power (2) 37 watt aux led lights. I have it hooked up to the reverse pin & neutral and when I put the truck into reverse the lights come on, however, my factory backup camera display now has vertical lines. What can I do to eliminate the distortion caused by the aux led lights?
Guy..nice video.....is the plug the same wiring as the as my truck..I have a pull behind dump....
Ok easy enough .. but where do I get a wire with a fuse attached ..
Guy,
Changing the battery fixed everything as we suspected. There must have been a short in the dead battery causing th efuse to blow every time I connected the vehicle to the trailer. Thanks for your help
Rod Pennington Thanks for the update. Bad batteries do it again. Cheers!
Just bought a trailer and it has a 7 pin blade connector as does my truck. The turn lights, brake lights work but when I turn on my truck lights only one running light on the trailer works. Went to change out the plug and noticed the trailer wire only has 6 actual wires, the seventh wire is white and is stamped as a "filler" wire, so not actually a wire. The plug only had 5 of the 6 available wires hooked up so trying to use any standard diagrams is a little confusing. The wire has a blue, black, brown, red, yellow and green. I'm not even sure where to start, any suggestions, thanks
Good news if you have one running light working, means the running pin on the truck is good. Make sure the pins have a good contact. Sounds to me like you have a wired severed on the running light circuit. On the running light that is good, that is likely the first one in the circuit, there is a wire connected to it that goes to the second light and so on. I'm guessing the wire going to the second light is faulty, so pull out that first running light and check them wires. Good luck and let me know how you make out.
The color of the wires, other that white (ground) and black (hot) doesn't mean too much. It is the location of the wire on the plug that matters and follows a sort of universal trailer wiring convention.
Thanks for the info, I'll keep you posted.
i have a 2004 4x4 suburban LT1500 with the stock 7 pin and a 40A fuse in "plug 1" under hood. I bought the 4 pin adapter for my boat trailer and I am still not getting power, the 40A fuse is not blown, should I get a 20A fuse? Thanks!
m00nchildblues If the seven pin works properly, then I suspect the 4 pin is not connected properly, poor connections really. Fuse would have nothing to do with your problem unless it is burnt out of course. Let me know what you find and how you resolve this problem. Cheers and good luck.
Thanks for response wow
Need to access power to charge trailer battery chevys have wires diked and taped can one of these b used the 7 pin is missing
Ralph Webber Webber Some new vehicles need a special booster pack in order to not confuse the cars onboard computer when connecting to a trailer. I'm guessing if the wires are there, it's ready to be used. You'll have to disconnect when parked for the night otherwise it will drain your truck battery.
ALL The wiring under my Electric Golf Cart came unplugged-- How do I determine which "plug" (male) goes into the correct socket (female)
+Wanda Sherrill Sorry I can't help you with that as I know nothing of Golf Carts and would need to see for myself before giving an opinion. Good luck with that!
I have a standard 4x8 utility trailer with a 4pin round and tried recently converting to a 7way round and was not successful. it's only 4 wires, but I can't figure out which one to connects to which one. 1black, 1red, 1brown and 1white. trailer is old but I was hoping to eliminate a bunch of adapters and just have one. any suggestions????
Sorry, but I would need a test light to confirm what each one is. In your case, quite sure white is ground, so as in the video, you could proceed and confirm what each one is then connect to corresponding pin on 7 plug. Good luck with that.
why are the two diagrams for the 7 pin different. the power, break, neutral, and marker are in different locations.
Gary P If you cut something in half and look at each half, one is the mirror image of the other. Ans so it is with the truck and trailer ends of the plug. I think that is your question?
I'm confused why would my trailer need a battery I though power came from the truck if so where would it be hooked to on the trailer
You would need a battery on your trailer if you have electric brakes for the safety switch that would activate your brakes if your trailer broke loose from your tow vehicle. I just installed electric brakes on my boat trailer but I haven't tested them yet. Hopefully it will make a noticeable difference in braking.
@Viol3ntSolution .. Usually the power pin of the plug (the thin black wire) goes straight to the thick black wire at the battery and acts as a trickle charger wire when on the road and plugged into the tow vehicle. So yes, the thick black wire on the trailer and the thin black wire of the plug are connected together. That is where the power comes from. Does this answer your question????
Can you do a chassis 7 way
nice and easy explanation
Thank you. It helps a lot.
Thor Hamm Thank you for posting. I always appreciate knowing that a video helped out in some way. Cheers my friend!
*****
Guy, Your video is excellent. I am going to replace my battery on the trailer as I now know it is weak, so I am guessing the testing I did on the trailer plug failed because of the weak battery. Is this a fair assumption?
*****
Next question... The 10 Amp fuse for the trailer wiring on my RAV4 blows every now and then when I attach the trailer (not always). Could having a weak battery be a reason to cause the short? Clearly I am replacing the battery on the trailer and will conduct the trailer test again to see if there is a circuit issue but I am concerned why only sometimes does the fuse blow when I connect the trailer. Any help you could give me would be appreciated.
Rod Pennington Yes, I think a bad battery on the trailer could cause that, but most likely an intermittent short on the trailer wiring is the culprit. Intermittent problems are a real pain to find and fix. Best of luck with that. Be sure to let me know what you discover and how you fixed the prob. Cheers!
How are you going to test a plug with no power in it. It's just a dead plug. The power to the plug comes from the truck not the battery in the camper.
That was the first thing i thought of' didn't make sense to me ether You must need another 12v source to power it up?
Thank you!
thanks
Very nice short and informative video. Bravo!
Should there be continuity between any pins on the trailer side?
This was as helpful and to the point. Nicely done thanks!
If the power & natural touch it blows the fuse. Which fuse? Could it be from the truck or a fuse somewhere on the trailer ?
Awesome simple video thank you
thank you...very helpful for a first time owner....
This is a joke , right? There is no power with the trailer plug disconnected.
I dont see how this wold work. Are you running the power and ground from female plug to the male plug THEN using a jumper wire? How can you run 1 jumper if its not plugged in, how can you run a jumper if it is plugged in. Looks good on paper, show real word live example.
The trailer is unhooked but has a battery installed! Battery is used for the emergency brake in case the trailer detaches when traveling. All do not have a battery. He says must have a battery. Another way is to ground the trailer to the vehicle then make a jump from the vehicle plug (power feed) to the different ports he showed. Still, do not jump to the ground or the vehicle fuse will blow.
All lights work on my 2008 gmc but when i test the left single light on my trailer it doesn't work just the trail light. I'v tried this with several trailers so I know it's not the trailers. There's something with my 7 pin hook up. When I test the left single in the plug I have a steady light put it won't flash. Can you help me.
Yes, this helped. I am a Happy Traveler now.
If I understand correctly, this clears it up for you. I hope it does, but if it doesn't, let me know and I'll explain it differently.
I don't see why not. You'll want to positively identify what each wire is for before you begin, but I don't see a problem there. Make sure you know which one is the ground wire, if there is a hot going to the battery, which one does the electric brakes etc. Good luck my friend.
This helped, thanks. As a tip to newby's not used to electrical stuff... I ran a standard car jumper cable from the 12v battery black (negative) pole to a ground point on my trailer (I used the ground wire from the breakaway battery). Then, I ran a wire (with a 15v volt fuse in the middle) from the red (positive) pole of the battery to the black (power) terminal on the 7-way plug. Then, I used a wire (no fuse necessary) from that power terminal to each of the other terminals to see what was lighting up on the trailer. In this way, I found that my trailer had the right, left, reverse, and marker wires mixed up. Thanks Guy.
Good Simple explanation and diagram. Thanks
James, you are very welcome, and thank you for taking the time to post a positive comment. Cheers!
I have two fully charged 6 volt batteries on my travel trailer. The Red wire from the trailer is attached to the Positive terminal on battery #1. The White ground wire is attached to the trailer frame and to the negative terminal on battery #2. I have a wire attached to the Negative on battery #1, and attached to the Positive on battery #2. They both have a full charge. I am trying to match the wiring on the truck side of a 7 way connector to the travel trailer. After watching your video a couple of times, I believe you are showing how to test the trailer side. I have a testing light and a piece of wire with a 15 amp fuse. Both ends of the wire have been stripped. If I follow your video, I attach the test light to a clean (unpainted) area on the trailer. I take the pointed end of the test light, and slide it into the trailer side plug. I am getting nothing. No light, nothing. I took the wire and slide it into the top left pin hole and inserted the other end into each of the other pins (avoiding the ground slot). Nothing, no power no lights on the trailer. Am I doing something wrong? Thank you for sharing this information.
great video
Hello Jill. Your boat trailer may have electric brakes and that fused wire may be for that. Hard for me to tell for sure from this end. Send me some picture of what you have there, of the wire with the fuse, I may be able to lead you in the right direction. Cheers...Guy
HI, I am a little confused. My problem is when I plug the 7 pin into my vehicle, the running lights of the trailer and the running lights of the truck go on. Did this with another vehicle, same thing. So where am I hooking up the batter to the trailer? Suggestions on this short? I do like your video's, you do make it easy. Thanks!
The brake lights and turn signal lights are the same. When you press the brakes, both turn signal lights come on. I'm not sure I understand your question???
so I have a 2013 dodge with a 7 conducted round connection from the factory. my trailer has 6 lugs but no center lug for the reverse I believe. I have no running lights on trailer but all other lights work. I can't figure out what is going on please help
thanks very helpful
Guy...great video. Very helpful. One question...did you say that the power to trailer frame should not activate the test light? The audio wasn't clear. Thanks
hello Sir. i have a 6 pin pj car trailer and i would like to install a 7 pin connector without any adapter. can this be done wit the wireing in the harness already on the trialer..it a 16 foot pj car trailer year 2005. thank you Anthony
Ok. You are testing the plug of the trailer, not the receptacle of the towing vehicle. I wish you could show that too.
how can the first phase of this work? where do you connect power from the battery to the trailer to get power from the power pin of the connector? am i missing something?
you know i hook that white wire and it didtn do anything to my 07avalance for back for my new rear fog lights at night
Very informative, to the point and nothing left out. Nice job! I have a '93 StarCraft XL Satellite popup trailer and am going to tow it with a '04 Town&Country. The T&C only has the 4pin flat style connector. What do I have to do to work and charge the on board (camper) battery etc? Any advice? What kind of harness for the T&C would I have to install? Etc. Thank you for this video and any advice on my project to be...
That is how a video should be. Clear ant to the point without gassing on about usless info or unneeded selfie shots
No hablo inglés y te entendí a la perfección. Muchas gracias 👍🏼
Bbt his is wrong power is top right and neutral or ground is left bottom
He is showing the trailer plug, which is a mirror image of the truck.
Um so where do I find aux for dump box and brakes r through tail lights so how do I plum in trailer brakes?
this it the other video with a different diagram ua-cam.com/video/D7uw1Jv1stc/v-deo.html
Helped me out very much sir.thanks.ps your shirt is very wrinkled
This is the simplest explanation I have found , thank you
Thanks for video Guy, but how do you hook up the battery to the piece of wire with the fuse? Could you explain how to do this please? Thank you.
Kevin Colson Hi Kevin. No need to connect anything to that piece of wire. That piece of wire is fused as a protective mechanism in case you accidentally short it out. The video assumes that you have a properly connected battery on your travel trailer. If your battery is properly connected then the power side of the plug (top left) is hot with 12 volts, and using the wire, you then send power and activate marker lights, or brakes, or signal lights etc. Good luck with that. Be sure to let me know how it all works out for you. Cheers!
Simple, straight forward. Thank you!
I have no electric brakes, where are the brake lights connected?
What happens if you accidentally plug it in upside down?
You explained everything in under 2 minutes!! Great video.
Guy, need your help. I did this very test and my fuse popped. It popped when I connected power to brake. Help me understand why.
Thanks in advance!!!!
I think his diagram has neutral and break reversed...so that would explain why it blew. But I am not an expert just basing off of my research of other diagrams
Thank you again, very easy to understand a direct to the point. I ate it that the battery that is hooked to the trailer has electric brakes which is the same battery that applies the brakes in case of the break way is activated. That is the only thing you should clarify. Art
JumpDump: I was not clear about the battery either. Still not : )
Hi, I couldn't find a wire with a 15a fuse in line, is this something you made?
I have the same issue.
+Jeff Gleason Any trailer hitch shop would have, also can easily be made with regular automotive fuses and a bit of solder. good luck with that, let me know how you make out with your problem.

Got it to work with electrical tape and a fuse and your video help me to diagnose the problem. Thanks very much for sharing your knowledge.
Nice job, Guy! Very helpful, and now I'm trying to understand why 15 people voted this down?
Jp Berger Thanks for the kind comment Jp Berger, glad you found the video useful. Cheers!
@RescuePits1 Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for taking the time to comment.
never mind I see the other video was for the vehicle
Simple and brilliant. Thank you!
Thank you. But one thing you don't explain, unless I missed it, is how do you hook the battery up to the trailer. Also, how come you can't use the 12 volt tester to test the light to see if they are on? thanks and thanks for the video.
Kyle Lassiter There is usually a black (positive) and white (negative) or red (positive) and black (negative) coming from the trailer that you attach to the battery. Your second question, if I understand correctly, a twelve volt tester to test would make a series circuit with the lights and the lights wouldn't come because the tester has high resistance and so would cause a high voltage drop. Try it! The fused wired sends power to the lights from the hot wire and lights them, the tester won't because it has too high a resistance, like someone kinking a water hose and not letting the water out.
Thank you Guy. I know it's a lot of work doing these, or I assume it is. Anyway, it is appreciated by those of us who need it.
I'm a little confused. At first power/neutral was good then it would blow the fuse
first use a test light first to see if power flows. then use a piece of wire to "straight wire" each of the trailer lights.
Nice video. I had to install a new Plug on my truck and now I can't get the electric Jack to work. the side lights for the Jack work but it will not go up or down. The Jack works fine on all the other trucks. Any advice. Thanks in advance.
+Jonathan Shordt Test your plug, sounds like a minor wiring issue, not enough amps going to the jack. Usually the jack is connected to the on board rv battery and has nothing to do with the plug, because you can usually jack up or down without being connected to tow vehicle. ua-cam.com/video/D7uw1Jv1stc/v-deo.html
Had wires crossed. Thanks.
Guy. In your other video, same topic and graphic, you have the brake and neutral slots reversed???
That is the view on the TRUCK side!?
Simple and straight to the point! Thanks
I have a boat trailer with a little problem. All the marker lights went out. It was a 30 amp fuse that blew, I only had a 15 amp so I used it, they worked. About half way home drivers side marker lights on the trailer went out. Any suggestions???
+kramu Check out the first marker light nearest the front of the trailer on the driver side. Take it apart, as I suspect the power loss occurs from there, or earlier, at the split where a Y forms and power is sent from there to either side. Good luck with that, let me know how it goes.
+Guy Presse Found a loose wire at the first marker light. fixed it...works fine now. Thanks. keep up the great videos and quick responses to questions.
+kramu Great, thanks for the update!
Silly question but the battery is obviously in the truck, and I have an issue with the running lights. Everything else works; left and right signal, and brakes when I apply the brake. But how do you attach a 12 volt battery to the trailer to test the plug?
Any 12v battery will work.
- Attach a wire (speaker wire works well) from the positive battery post and to the running lights slot on the 7 way.
- Attach another speaker wire from the negative battery post to the negative slot on the 7 way.
@@aguyandhiscomputer On Guy Presse diagram, he doesn't show where the running lights slot is, and where the negative slot is. Is running lights the same as Power, and negative slot the Neutral? Thanks for responding back, Guy and his computer

You have to different diagrams in the 2 videos I would like to know the correct one.
This one is for trailer side, the other is from the towing vehicle.
👍👏👏👏👍👍tank You so much
Hi. Just wondering what the trailer has to have a battery? I understand for teating purposes but I always thought that the TOW vehicle supplied power to the trailer for lights, brakes and charging the trailers Rv house batteries. Theoretically you should be able to TOW with full trailer function with no Rv trailer batteries on board no?Thank you ahead. Daz
+private You're quite right, the battery in this video is just for testing purposes. I think the cut-away switch and emergency electric brakes on travel trailers (in case the trailer comes unhitched on the road) are connected to the battery on board, but you may want to double check on this. Let me know what you find out, I just forget for sure. I've seen trailers with smaller batteries for this purpose, and I think it was on the utility trailers. Cheers bro!
+Guy Presse thanks for the quick reply. That makes sense for sure. I was just wondering because in a comment with another fellow you guys discussed the Rv (trailer) battery being low and causing problems. I have a 2000 avion Fifth triple slide and the last time i moved it the tow vehicle reverse lights would come on and the brakes on the fifth who'd lock up. I ended up having to tow the last 5km via hitch only and no trailer brakes which made for a very cautious and slow trek. I'm pretty sure the issue is due the tow vehicle wiring and not my trailer as the wiring in my trailer has not been altered since the last time it was towed, and this tow vehicle is new to me. All that blathering being said, any chance you could shed some light possibly on that particular problem? Thanks again. Good video and an awesome DIY to test your trailer wiring. Clever.
+private I have another video on how to test the tow vehicle 7 pin plug (ua-cam.com/video/D7uw1Jv1stc/v-deo.html), that might help you pinpoint the problem. It is common enough that the wiring sometimes shorts and causes issues. Let me know how it turns out for you.
+Guy Presse ha! I found that video about 30 seconds after I pressed send. I am going to check that tow vehicles wiring out as per your video tomorrow. thanks again man.
Very helpful videos. Where do I buy the wire with the 15 amp fuse?
David Sleight Pretty well any automotive repair or RV dealer that has a repair shop. It looks like this, visforvoltage.org/files/u1786/NewFuseBox.jpg
Short and to the point GREAT!
Color codes would make it
EXCELLENT
Ralph Webber Webber There is some variability in the wiring color schemes, depending on manufacturer and year, so thought if best to keep the video simple and short, and leave color codes out. There is lots of info on the net regarding color codes. Cheers.
Thank you
Thank you.
Your video is verry helfull
Rey Ballo Thanks Rey. Glad you found the video helpful. Cheers my friend!
👍
Excellent video ,, and excellent advice on troubleshooting ,, straight direct and to the point,, thanks!!
You'd have to install a seven pin plug on vehicle and trailer and bring a fused wire from the battery of the tow vehicle to the 7 pin plug. The corresponding battery wire on the trailer goes straight to the battery or preferably attaches to the positive cable going to the battery (sometimes in junction box under the trailer), that way it gets power from the converter also to charge the battery. Cheers, have fun, and good luck with that.
what
Sonny Bono is alive!!!! Yeah! That's a compliment. You look like him.
Most trailer manufacturers use whatever scraps of wire they have in the smallest gauge possible and no specific colors to cut costs. It makes following wires from the front to the rear almost impossible. I'm sure everyone would pay an extra $50 to have a better wiring job done before the trailer is sold new. Mine is 6 wire from the front to the brake area, where it goes into a household junction box haha. From there it goes to 4 wire to the back where it is connected directly to the lights. The power wire for each used a marette with many connecting wires and the grounds were each screwed to the frame and most of them rusted off within 5 years. The places the lights were installed held water and there was much corrosion in all of them. And we put up with this why?
need to use an iron for your shirts, or a wife.....lol
