@@AmreshTripathi Honestly, the issue isn't with her , it's with the usual roles given to women like her (and Vidya Balan), they won't be cast in many "mainstream" movies where the girls cast are usually thin with very youthful looks. Huma has sensuality and maturity, a true Goddess who's also talented and her acting is good, God bless her.

Shikayat : a tour into the heart of a vulnerable woman.
Heartbreak, in Hindi cinema, has mostly been portrayed from male perspective. Popular male heartbreak songs are full of the verses of angst & helplessness. 'Shikayat' seems to be the answer to those songs from the female perspective. It is coming out of the pain of a misunderstood, misconstrued & misinterpreted woman.
In the film 'Gangubai Kathiawadi', Gangu sacrifices his love for Afsaan & marries him off to a girl of Kotha. She keeps her own emotions on stake for the greater good. The lyrics of the song conveys everything that Gangu would never be able to tell Afsaan.

Gangu knows that she has broken Afsaan's heart & she doesn't mind Afsaan going around cursing & badmouthing about her. Women often have to do away with their love for several societal factors & pressure. However, it becomes really painful when the same society clinges mud at her for abondoning her loved one. Her love, commitment, heartbreak & everything is suppressed under the mountain of accusations.
The beautiful Huma Qureshi carries of the song with so much grace. The choreography is not so much about technical dance steps as much it is about 'adaayegi'. Huma dances more with her face than the rest of her body. As a drunk & visibly unstable Gangu walks away from the jalsa alone, Huma tears apart a part of her Gajra & throws it away lovingly, signifying Gangu's astounding act of parting Afsaan from her life.
'Shikayat' is more melancholic than tragic, more heartwrenching than heartbreaking. 'Shikayat' doesn't spread hatred against love, doesn't accuse anyone. It only tells the tale of a hopeless heart that absorbed all the hate to give out only love.

I watched this song while watching Gangubai movie for the first time today. I was in awe of Huma's expressions and everything Alia was feeling while Huma performed. The lyrics were so spot on with what movie wanted to show through eyes of a sex worker and what love really means for them. This is one of the most beautiful yet heartbreaking songs given by Bollywood.

@@Haribollll Exactly! 'Teri Mehfil Mein' is a Qawalli Jugalbandi based on Raga Jaunpuri, if I'm not wrong. And 'Shikayat' is a typical Raga-Darbari-based Qawwali song. Both of these songs sound similar because Raga Jaunpuri and Darbari belong to the same family (or Thaat). But they are entirely two different Ragas with their unique features.
