She was in her mature years however she is still wise and has resources with a lot of humour as it was in life! For me to have Abbado, Montserrat, Raimondi, Dara, Cuberli, Chausson, Gasdia .. is a top performance !!!!!
Clever way to get Montsy down to the lower level. Bad luck breaking her knee on a curb in Manhattan when she was much younger. I believe she thereafter suffered from difficulty with steps.
NO one can sing this like Montsy Cabbage, what delivery! Except that no one knows what she's singing, what language and who wrote it. Certainly not Rossini. I prefer to remember the great Lucrezia Borgia and the great Salome of the past.
@tklogan111809 It is not important:. you can check any version of the Opera, even the Pesaro none are so brilliant, so funny and full of such enthusiasm as the Vienna of 1988.. I cant understand that Classica which has the tape did not publish a DVD of this maestrissima presentation. Try to gather such a castunder Abbado with the Vienna Philharmonic!I have a poor tape quality of this performance which I look at when I feel depressed. It should be reimbursed by the Social Security in Paris!lol!
I'm sorry but it doesn't reach the level of the Vienna performance. It is the shadow of how this opera in this staging should be performed. The cast did bel canto forgetting that this was kind of a farce and the public should feel the cast was getting fun on the stage like in the Vienna performance or the one I was lucky to attend to in 1999 at the Pesaro Festival
This is the Vienna performance, and she basically _makes_ the Vienna performance the enchantment that it is.. more vocally preserved and/or disciplined exponents of the role have been rivetingly boring
Tremenda, se la cava solo con una simpatia molto ruffiana, ma è approssimativa, oscillante, cambia e adatta la linea vocale come le va e spaccia falsetti per soavità. Non parliamo della pronuncia pasticciata (di vaghi uaaaggiadooooo), degli acuti stridenti, di un canto tutto a sbalzo fra pianissimi, farfugli e strilletti. Mi ricordo che tanto per far qualcosa invece che cantare, gettava mele al direttore. Una scelta sbagliata (ma recidiva: già aveva rovinato la prima di Ermione...)
Yes, funny onstage etc, and a lady of the stage she is, BUT she is not singing Rossini. One cannot understand the words she sings, they are rounded off too much. She goes from little screams and piani to approximated cadenzas, falsetto effects, changes in tempo and timing. The previous year, her ERMIONE in Pesaro was a personal disaster, despite some inspired moments. Such bad phrasing and tempo shows disrespect for the composer, the work, and the audience.

Obviously she's not in her prime, the top is rough etc., but the coloratura is VERY crisp, and she shapes it with great taste.

Yes she did, it troubled her at times and later on thats why she needed a stick or a helping hand down any stairs ,eg Herodiade x
