      @@glennrudolph There used to be another guy that did the videos a couple years back for a short time. They gave the poor guy such a hard time in the comments sections for sounding like Ryan. That's not a bad thing.
      I think all of the guys present the information well. In the earlier videos, even Ryan didn't sound like Ryan. Obviously, they have found a formula that works with these videos.

    I think before tests like this, we need answers about water air ratio first. Is more air draw actually means better performance?

      chicken or the egg :)

    • @glennrudolph
      @glennrudolph 5 років тому

      Kind of my question too. What does air draw even impact? If you get less water in the pump, then you are going to need a bigger skimmer for your water volume.

  • @um02122
    @um02122 5 років тому

    I have a Deltec MC500 in the back chamber of the RSM C250.
    If I leave the air valve 100% open, there is too much air drawn in for the pumps flow rate and the foam collapses. If I turn the knob only halfway through, I get better foam.
    I assume the flow rate of the pump gets split in between water and air flow rate. Too much air to water ratio results in less foam.
    It is true that without any water flow there would be no Venturi to draw air in.
    For me, the main ways to get consistent skimmate in the above setup was to ensure a constant water level with ATO level switch in the back chamber and to keep the air flow tap at 45° out of 90° from fully open to closed.

    Another timely video. My skimmer is a real pain. But the question I have is how does air draw impact performance at removing waste? So we just want the most air draw or does this just mean I have to set the skimmer differently?

    Not sure what we are to do with this information?? I have the Somatic 60s. When running within the suggested depth. I'm my case I have a Eshops sump that only gives a seven inch depth. I can not run the skimmer without it dumping tons of bubbles into the sump. As you see in the quick shot towards the end of the video. I got the skimmer just after Christmas. The skimmer is set on top of a ~3.5 rise. So the skimmer is only running in 3.5-4 inches of water with the gate less than 50%. Skimms a ton of dark skim mate. But I don't see it running at suggested depth.

    Newbie question. With the excess waste water that drains from the protein skimmer collection cup. Does this contain salt from the water? Is it best to catch & remove that excess water that drains from the skimmer rather than let it drain back into the sump? Keep up the good work as the BRS You Tube channel is my first port of call when I want to find out something to do with salt water aquariums.

    • @BRStv
      @BRStv  4 роки тому

      The skimmate does contain saltwater, so I suppose on a long enough timeline, salinity could become an issue. That said, with semi-regular water changes and testing, we can counteract the very minimal salinity swing

      If there is restriction of airflow. If using the same size tubing, not overfilling the canister with water, and not extending the tubing run to far the impact would be minimal.

    This series of investigates may end up being even more boring than salt. I’m afraid the skimmer shape episodes are going to put me right back in high school geometry class. Hopefully the end results are clear answers and solutions to choosing a skimmer.
    Also, I think the series of investigates should parallel Ryan’s 360 and help him make decisions along the way.

      Randy R. I’m looking forward to it! UV investigates will be an awesome topic! I just picked up a Pentair HO50w (same one used on the brs160) for my new house’s new build.
      Those R2R quarantine nerds like humblefish could probably chime in with some good info too. I know quarantine isn’t UV and it’s surely been investigated before, but in-vivo does not equal in-vitro...especially in reefing!

  • @Mike__B
    @Mike__B 5 років тому +1

    Gotta say a bit disappointed in your choice of skimmers you use for this test. 3 Reef Octopus skimmers, 2 of which are the same skimmer design just different sizes, and then the other 3 are all really low end skimmers. I know you said you picked skimmers in a similar price bracket but maybe you should have picked skimmers over a wide range of brands instead, Vertex, Nyos, Tunze, heck even the IM skimmers you sell.
    I'm sorry to sound so negative with this comment, I do love the work you guys do, but I feel like the conclusion falls a bit flat due to your testing criteria (i.e. all cheap skimmers). Maybe a test to see if price does make an impact in performance or operation in some way? Does that Vertex Skimmer do the same as the Reef Octopus 110SSS which supposedly has the same tank size ratings, does that Varios Regal brand Octopus really do much difference than the cheaper older models?

    • @BRStv
      @BRStv  5 років тому +4

      I don't think it came across as well as it should have but we selected top-selling skimmers in that price bracket. By definition, this applies to the most people and seemed like the best way to approach it. Next test will have a wider price bracket and include more brands but same approach to voted by the community as the most popular by their buying behavior.

      Hey my RO110sss is NOT cheep!!! Maybe a little bit of a hussy but she works hard for me.😜 I would like the see the super pricy skimmers run through the wringer though. Everytime I think a “better” model will be more effective my 110 pulls the blackest funk ever and I decide to stick with it. Let’s put the skimmers in some nasty water and see what model/brand makes the water crystal clean the quickest.
