    Gail Devers wins the gold medal in the women's 100m event at the Barcelona 1992 Olympic Games.
    The event was extremely close as 5 women finished within a space of 0.06 seconds to create a nail-biting finish.
    A true champion, Yolanda Gail Devers' track success came after years of misdiagnosed health problems. The American failed to qualify for the 1988 South Korean Olympics games in Seoul due to symptoms of an enlarged thyroid caused by an undiagnosed condition. After suffering with severe headaches and blurred vision, Devers lost 23 pounds of body weight before finally being correctly diagnosed with Graves' disease in 1990. Two years of healthy training followed, enough to win gold at the Olympic Games in Barcelona.

    Well its all Gail here but Juliet Cuthbert second place from Jamaica executed a fine race.....Jamaica has always looked for a male or female to win the 100m at the Olympics but they had to wait until 2008 The Year of Delivery even Gail said it was the Jalympics nothing can be taken away from Jamaica now they have stood the test of time waiting patiently for their champions to emerge and it has started. We host the biggest High School championships in the World where athletes from all high schools emerge for Championship honours, all of today's dominating athletes emerged from this Championship held yearly this year its 104 years old....omg we waited so long Our time to REIGN now

    Yeah, everybody was so happy for her when she won the race. I had never heard of her and during this era, it was Gwen and Ottey's disdain for each other. So Devers practically came out of nowhere, imo. After watching the movie on her life, she was apparently a track contender until graves disease got the best of her. Great comeback story though.

    1:01 one of the reasons you don't see coaches track side anymore. Great coach, but craved the spotlight. It' supposed to be about the athletes.

    • @JessieColt2
      @JessieColt2 8 років тому +2

      1st, she ran to him, not the other way around. 2nd, her coach was Bob kersee (if you are too young, or stupid, to not know who he is, look him up). 3rd. he didn't "crave the spotlight" since everyone, at the time, already knew who he was and what his reputation was as a coach. (See #2).

    • @ranhill
      @ranhill 8 років тому +1

      +Jessie Colt Of course I know exactly who he is, that's why I said what I did. Husband of Jakie Joyner, brother in law to FloJo, currently coaching Felix, Tarmoh, and Harper to name a few (if you don't know their first names, look it up.) And what does her running to him have to do with him hogging the camera, here and at other events? Or are you too young or too stupid to realize this wasn't the only time?

    • @ranhill
      @ranhill 8 років тому +1

      ranhill (I'M NOT WRITING THIS FOR YOU BUT FOR THE PPL WHO READ YOUR COMMENT, SO THEY WON'T BE DECEIVED BY YOUR MISINFORMATION) I remember perfectly... Bobby was the one that helped Gail through her Graves disease and talked her into taking her beta blockers even though it stopped her from qualifying for trials, rules the committee later changed... He also picked her up in love when her feet were busted and bleeding, and she was shut in her house, much like he did that day. His exuberance is a testament to what they'd( ALL OF THEM) endured the year bf when they almost lost Gail! Bobby's a great coach and your sheer disdain is unfounded.

    • @CHEETAH69
      @CHEETAH69 8 років тому

      +pnutbutrncrackers actually yeah. this is a race. how are you gonna posit a scenario where an entire important part of a runner's race was taken out and suggest a new ending? Why not say, "The race would have been different if Gail didn't have feet?"

    • @pnutbutrncrackers
      @pnutbutrncrackers 8 років тому

      CHEETAH69
      Because the point that you are missing is that something ATYPICAL happened in this race. Devers got off to a poorer start than usual. And this unusual element made the race closer than it normally would have been. Your suggested parallel about someone having no feet is really no parallel to the situation here at all (unless the feet fell off during one particular race).

      Great comment. It seems as if that is the difference ( the true secret to track greatness is doing the dreaded 400) between the ones who make it to the top of the podium. If you go back to Bolt's interviews you see that he started to win when he started using it more. Asafa stays away from even the two and we all have seen his results.
      Even Felix's 200 improved tremendously after stepping up to the four. But the four seems brutal.
