Mark is such a complete player.IMO the greatest compliment one can give a bassist. And he's a nice guy!
These lessons are always fantastic 👌
On #1 there's also the added benefit of being able to setup your bass lower if you play lightly - that makes it easier on your left hand too. Great vid Mark. Thanks.
I really appreciate your use of Saintly Steve Harris, an excellent bass player who is incredible for someone that is entirely self taught... 🤘🏼
Great lesson as always Mark, thank you 🙂
#11 I suck at Rest stroke technique unless I am playing simple slow bass line such as "My Girl". Any other fast, hard bass lines, I feel as someone seeing bass guitar for the first time (hands slugish, extremely slow). I am stuck on free style pick, I guess. Thanks Mark, great lesson as always.
Great lesson, as always. You never disappoint, Mark. Thanks a lot.
Very helpful, thanks!:)
Great lesson
As always, another fantastic lesson Mark. Very thorough and lots of good tips. This is definitely something I need to continue to work on as I started out as a pick player. Thanks!
Causes hard picked bass slap makes figured strong and getting a muscle
I’ve started a new project and was looking for a good lesson on improving my picking….went out, played a gig and this popped up 👍👍👍
I think I'll have to watch this again, after a few months. And then again, and again.
You are the man! Thanks Mark!
Excellent lesson!
Awesome lesson. Also your style and concepts are very clear and useful as a reference for other teachers. Thanks
Up the irons!
Tnx Mark!
Well, I am a lefty playing right-handed and I mostly use a pick. That might be a reason.
I was very glad to see this lesson pop up! I originally learned to play by raking when crossing to lower strings, and soon incorporated this into muscle memory. To my regret, as it turns out, as it tends to lead me into being "finger twisted" on more complex lines. I do alternate picking exercises now to break the habit, but there doesn't seem to be that much material on it online (Ariane Caps' approach seems a little too 'strict' for my tastes). Great pragmatic tips, Mark!
excellent lesson, awaken me to analyse my technique
Thank you 👍😎
All of this should have been part of the first lesson... very important to establish proper technical skills early on... don't develop bad habits that you have to overcome later.
Great stuff - this video is packed with gems - thankyou 😜👍🏼 Tip: watch the video at 0.75 on the speed setting (top right corner drop down menu) to give yourself a chance (if you’re anything like me 😎)
I need learn , economic picking, is amazing
How do you correctly gallop, I’ve played what sounds like a gallop but I’m not sure if I’m playing it right?
I run into a conflict using floating thumb...it seems to force a flatter angle of attack when I'd rather have the fingers angled more inward (but then I have to pick up the thumb)...
If pianists can settle fingering for music that is far more complex than bass parts, I think bass players can accept the responsibility of working 'out' and 'at' the challenging riffs until they are committed to auto-pilot of neuro-muscular memory.
27:20 reminds me of some of Thundercat's dreamier stuff
Indeed, don't play without an amp. Iv build up bad technique playing "acoustically" and it's hard to play soft and fast for me.
What do you think about using your index finger to strike a string both into the string and out against the string instead of using both fingers? I find myself doing this more and more, especially when the notes are fast and on the same note.
That's a very interesting technique in my opinion and I think I read somewhere that Chuck Rainey used it too. If it works for you and it sounds good I'd say keep on using it
the biggest issue for me is the fretting hand.
I pick with my ring finger plus the middle and pointing fingers is that problematic .
Not necessarily, look at Les Claypool or Billy Sheehan (whose three finger picking approach got covered by Mark in another excellent lesson), but these guys also have excellent two finger technique. As with everything, there's pros and cons. With three fingers, what you gain in speed, you might loose in consistency and vice versa. But it never hurts to know different techniques, it all depends on how you want to use them and in what context. Hope that helps
12:23--puny: but 19:30 diagnosis is I am "twinger - fisted"
Such BS… obviously he’s the one talking, his bass hasn’t said shit in any of his videos so far. So misleading
I know this is about fingerpicking, but for when you use a pick, hold the pick like Bobby Vega: use one of the two top rounded sides to hit the strings, not the pointy end.
Agreed, sounds fatter and more control
