- This video provides an example of showing a dales pony in-hand. These videos should:
Handlers wear smart casual clothes. Unbacked ponies in halter/headcollar, long leather lead or a neutral lead rope. Backed ponies in snaffle bridle. Ponies are shown clockwise round the ring and will be expected to show a good active walk and trot. The handler will be at the pony’s shoulder. Remember the camera is where the judge would be standing with one continuous video of the pony & handler, if there is a blooper-just keep filming or redo the entire ride/show as edits are not acceptable)
• Start the video with ‘judge/videographer’ watching the pony enter the arena or field.
• Walk your pony towards the ‘judge’ and halt. Announce only the pony’s class, number (will be assigned to you at registration) and age. “Judge” videographer videos the pony as it walks towards him/her and square halts in front of ‘judge’
• While pony continues to stand, video the right side of the pony, standing back to see the whole pony and close up.
• “Judge’ walks around the pony slowly, video hindquarters hooves to croup with handler moving to allow judge to see all points.
• Video the left side of the pony, same. Handler moves to allow judge to see left side.
• Handler will then walk the pony briskly away from the judge in straight line.
• Turn
• Trot the pony towards the judge in straight line.
• Trot the pony away from the judge clockwise, around the arena, really getting some speed up, staying at the left side of the pony’s shoulder and keeping handler’s legs in synch with pony.
• The judge is looking for straight powerful action and the pony should be trained to trot freely when asked. The handler should run at the pony’s shoulder and in time with the pony’s stride. This takes time to get right so it is worth practicing before video. Handlers need to be fit to run fast and long!
