Yes unique beautiful soul ! l was with him last time February 2020 special moments went said goodbye my dear friend! l returned to Santiago Chile 🇨🇱.✨💫✨✨🌷
I love how every piece he plays could be like a soundtrack of a movie. He genuinely makes music. He doesn't just play a technical piece. He tells a story every time... Musicians should really learn from this guy. Technique helps us to make better music. Not to show of, or play "according to what my teacher said that is right".
I think Kavakos had the fastest one. If you check his recording of god save the king in the ending variation he does a couple of extremely fast upbow staccato. Hassid is an amazing performance but I wouldn't compare his staccato to Gitlis. Surely Gitlis had an amazing staccato especially becauze it was always beautiful and classy. Not a lot of people can say that
surely you must be joking! Tasso Janopoulo is one of the best accompaniests of the century! Frequently played with Szeryng, Thibaud, Grumiaux, Milstein, etc. And, more surely, anyone that can follow gitlis should be hailed for this skill :)
Ivry Gitlis was born on August 22, 1922, in Haifa, Israel, to Russian parents. He is considered one of the most talented musicians of his generation, and many of his recordings are considered classics. For me Gitlis is probably the best violinist ever, (After Paganini) and even better than Heifetz
12 years ago, I didn’t expect or desire to be alive till now, but I hope you are, Kacharov. This is just to say that Haifa was in Palestine in 1922, not Israel.
Haha! I agree. It’s incredible. I’m almost ashamed to say this is the first time in 35 years of knowing this piece that I’ve heard Gitlis play this and it’s already my favourite interpretation. Wonderful
My God...is this normal? Interpretation and technique are so profound. Sometimes a bit controversial, and sometimes he misses a note or two. But Mr. Gitlis interpretation is so unique and trilling, its a treasure and beyond what we ever would expect. Its a miracle. Mr. Heifetz and Mr. Gitlis should walk hand in hand on this piece...but Mr. Gitlis has my credit to lead the way of His Masters Voice.
Agreed. You must include Josef Hassid though, probably the best performance of this piece (and one of the few left of this ultimate talent unfortunately)
@marcvdm1111 Hassid has an excellent and clean recording of this piece, that being said, musically, it doesn't compare to this rendition. I am not taking anything away from Hassid, either. It's just that Gitlis has some innate ability to convey some radical ideas in his recordings, and the up bow staccato in this recording is absolutely radical.
paganini 24 caprices cd is widely available. its very good, not as good as some other stuff though. his paganini concerto no.1 is out of this world. i think its at least 2-3 minutes shorter than any other recording if that gives you a clue :)
An aesthete’s absolute delight. Such a craftsman he was - always digging out the function of the phrases. Gitlis was an artist’s artist and for that he will be forever an inspiration. RIP
Astonishingly free and virtuosic. It leaves me breathless and speechless. Gitlis is one genius violinist/artist like few others. Thank you for posting this. Bravo.
Certainly a unique interpretation - truly a caprice in his hands as opposed to the sweet and sentimental approach most violinist take with this piece. Kudos to the pianist for catching every unexpected nuance. RIP Maestro Gitlis...
i just had a masterclass with Mr. Ivri Gitlis in Sweden, he is 86 and he still plays that well as he did it before, great person full of live and music.
Interesting playing! Can we imagine it was almost 50 years ago! And I saw this Master playing beautifuly two years ago in a Tokyo recital. What a longevity. Also, his Capricieuse is really capricious! ! Fantastic!
I would dare to say that this recording is about 10-15% speeded up. Regardless, it is imho the best version (at least on youtube) of this piece... So tragic that 2020 decided to strip us once again of such a godly player.
@wooo341 La capricieuse refers to what? A capricious girl or woman perhaps. Theirs whims are sloppy and whimsical by definition. So Heifetz should study women to be more authentic ;)
Stop with this Poor pianist thing Plz!!!!why poor pianist??? Great Pianist!!!!!!! He knows what he is doing!!!! Giving soloist Full accurate support!!!! Praise him!! dont Pitty him, hes a Great one !!!!
his staccato is so fast, he has to hang on the to the note before for extra time, so the staccato run ends on the next down beat. fascinating to listen to, but wondering if he can even control the speed. the piece would sound better if he could slow the staccato down just a smidge and play more in rhythm. but hey, that's Gitlis. been listening to him for 50 years, a unique character in the violin world. life would be boring if everyone played like Szeryng.
SIMPLEMENTE SOBRENATURAL E INCOMPRENSIBLE.
@harut49 On the face of it perhaps but staccato is much easier really fast . if he played in time thus slowing the stacc. passages down it becomes more difficult.
No matter how much I like Gitlis's playing, I would hate to be the person accompanying him. >_> That.... seems as though it would be demanding on at least five more dimensions than accompaniment usually is. Janpoulo deserves many awards for being able to follow this performance.
May his dear soul rest in peace. What a great violinist and unique soul

99% of the violinists today don't even know how to "rest" the violin as stable and as tension-free as he can.
I'm so devastated. RIP to a legend and lover of life! His joie de vivre will be greatly missed.
Sory for the world ! we miss him
That is by far the fastest up bow staccato I've ever seen. Lol
On par with M.Rabin`s ..)
It looks almost a combination of ricochet ... maybe ?
@@samegross6337 It's called flying staccato as opposed to staccato where your bow is stuck to the string...
nobody ever has a staccato like this. not heifetz, not perlman...no...nobody.
Frank With The Violin I’m pretty sure if heifetz and Perlman wanted to do flying staccato they could just practice and get it
Check out Hassid’s version, as a 16/17 yr old. Out of this world, and sadly one of 6 or 7 pieces he was able to record
I think Kavakos had the fastest one. If you check his recording of god save the king in the ending variation he does a couple of extremely fast upbow staccato.
Hassid is an amazing performance but I wouldn't compare his staccato to Gitlis.

How about Rabin?
Elgar would be so proud of that stacatto
Of every single note!

listen Folks i couldn't stop the tears before the end of this video , immortal performance !
I love this interpretation. Wow. Also his virtuosity and staccato isn’t too shabby either. Incredible
Absolutely brilliant playing! Love his vibrato, and the rapid-fire staccato has all the explosiveness of a machine gun.

If you don't like this performance, record your own playing and upload it. And let's see if that video will ever be watched after 54 years! :P

Such a unique violin playing, Bravo!
Staccatissimo......
how could one POSSIBLY dislike this?
well, i dont know a think about classic music or this kind of music, but it sounds really nice.... worth listning to
Such a character! Sense of humor, capriciousness, suspense, charm
Gitlis has great character. One will always recognize him. Can't say this about contemporary violinists :-)
Alas, this is true for pianists too! Academia has murdered music! Most younger musicians today don’t dare to express anything personal.
