  • On this episode, we start off by decluttering as we normally do in the basement! Then I start to discuss how I always feel a little anxious right before I start a basement decluttering video. That fear has lowered over time but it still exists. So I declutter scared anyway! And once I get started, the fear always disappears as I become more confident in my decluttering abilities!

I just took a bag of clothes from my husband and daughter to Goodwill. A local charity was collecting tees so they got a bag, too. I gave craft items to another crafter. We don't have much space so things have to fit. Tina, Al's wife

I understand that anxiety very well. Oftentimes it’s too strong to conquer and that’s why stuff gets put into bags and stuffed out of sight. I get the same panic too.

Ironically, I have no attachment to your Little pony collection or your drinking glasses from the 80's. However when I saw the case to your sewing machine I knew immediately what it was. I was so glad when you took off the cover and I saw the machine. Those heavy duty all metal vintage sewing machines have real value to the right people.
I Am A sewer, and I had a genuinely visceral reaction to the thought that you were going to let that machine go.
And then when you announced that someone was going to pick it up (and she had a sentimental attachment to it because it was her aunt's) immediately I felt as if a genuine wait had dropped from my shoulders. It just goes to show how hoarders develop attachments to their own possessions and just "stuff."😅

I searched for the right person to take my Mom's cast iron Singer sewing machine from the 40s. Found a pro seamstress/quilter who took it. They never break down, and are worth their considerable weight in gold.

Dealing with items from passed loved ones takes a bit of work for me. I recently donated an item. My first impulse was to rid of it. At the donation center it hurt my heart. Now I doubt my decision. So I know I have to sit and pray for clear vision to discern between those items I really truly do want in my life because of positive reasons and those items I keep because of those million reasons we hoarders have up our sleeve! Doubts and regrets are going to happen. But I don't want them keeping me from moving forward.....even if moving forward means feeling more regret, which it certainly will! This is life. But this life here is not my forever home, and this thought is what I have to hold onto during the difficult moments which lie between holding on and letting go. LOVE YA!!!!! Denise

If you have children they will appreciate you doing the decluttering instead of them. My mom only kept one small item from her mom and her sister. And she(70) is slowly decluttering her entire house and garage and only leavingstuff she needs for sure.

Just a quick tip for saving baby shoes - You might want to put each individual pair in a ziploc bag. I recently went through my childhood memory bin and my baby shoes (the bottoms) had disintegrated into a sand like material. Luckily, mine were in a ziploc bag because if not it would have gotten everywhere! You can even write on the bags about why that pair was sentimental (for ex. my coming home from the hospital outfit is all organized like this).

damp traps too... like from pill bottles -silica packs, and I also use white chalk... sealed in bags can still get musty if there's enough humidity already in them...all my totes and vacu save bags I add a couple of pieces of chalk min... If I have lavender I also add that too.

For me de-cluttering is extra difficult because I’ve held onto things I’ve been waiting to do. Children done, single again, hoping for a house and have held onto furniture and craft things I love. But storage units are costly to maintain, until I ever get a home. I’m late 60’s.

    • @vvvv-h8m
      @vvvv-h8m 3 місяці тому +5

Your waiting and holding on until you purchase a home. If I am permitted to say I would get rid of any storage units and hold on to a few good pieces of furniture and crafts. Enjoy your life now and don't stress about the future or getting a house. Please start enjoying everyday of your life

@@vvvv-h8m You may say so, and Thank you. My main difficulty lies in not being sure of who I am. I finally left a very malignant, covert narcissist husband of many years, and was raised by the same type of parent. So it’s a lot of forging healthy, new neurological pathways and learning how my brain works. Trying to de-hoard my apt before I’m asked to leave.

we did that as well tho stored for free at my mom's basement... its worth it to downsize more... if there are key pieces irreplaceable then for sure keep them.. if its the same furniture everyone owns then probably get rid of it.. min aim to downsize to a smaller unit.. if its several yrs for upsized home the fees may not make it worth it. things you keep pack them HIGH: pack n stack. fabrics/clothing.. .vacu save.
we also took a load every time we visited to sort through if there was anything to downsize... and when we went back.. brought the totes back to store, better organized and labeled.
I would film or take pics of everything then see what to get rid of...I found taking pics makes it easier to get rid of things, I also take pics of keeps esp if they are important.
I have a ton of hobbies and it can take me yrs to go back to them... so I downsized everything... fabrics ( still have a lot), paints, puzzles etc. I might keep a few items but for the most part... assessed everything I had. ex I might knit so I kept 2 large bolts of yarn. scrapbooking... kept all the stickers and embellishments I think I want to use.. I cut out or remove any ones I don't want.. donate or give to family.
If there are kids stuffs... see if your kids want them for their kids, keep a few favs toys or clothing. we are still hoping for kids.. so I don't really touch the nest egg to downsize those... I have checked them before, and got rid of some things- esp checking for things no longer recommended to use get destroyed etc ( made some cat toys out of positioners).
IF there are things you would want them to get when you die... give them now see if they want them. when my oma moved we go all that stuff and were able to enjoy them when she was still alive.
when we upsized here a few yrs ago I thought I was done w downsizing our stuff... but soon after some things I wanted for my future house... wasn't for THIS house.
plus this house was nearly turnkey w everything too so we had to downsize some things that came w the house which was extremely easy.

That is a beautiful old sewingmachine too. Maybe you want to put it on display once you got your crafts corner. Just put it on a nice shelf to look at even if you're not using it. I'd understand that. I have a 100yr old beautiful sewingmachine that doesn't work well, but it's on display for that same reason. It doesn't have much resalevalue, but it's aesthetically pleasing. Edit. I didn't watch the video further but I saw you got another great option for it that doesn't give you a bad feeling to pass it on. Beautiful!

My Mom had a sewing machine just like that. Same color and all. As a matter of fact. It is sitting in my sisters house. We just can not get rid of it. The little table Dad got for her to sit it on. Also, has a lot of memories. Of my childhood. They are 6 kids in my family. 1 boy (oldest) 5 girls (i am the baby) 😂 60 years old. 😂 when we needed a hair cut. Dad would take the sewing machine off the table. Each one of us kids would take turns. Sitting on that table so Dad or Mom could cut our hair. Makes me tear up just thinking of those days. You are doing so good letting things go. I have got the memories in my heart. If my sister would one day decides to get rid of it. Really enjoyed the video. Sorry about my rambling.

each eps you do... it looks so much better... don't ever forget how far you have come.
I do different cleaning styles... which leads to churching some piles... IF I just need it tidy I will dump things in containers, bags or totes ( sometimes shove into another rm to hide to deal w later.. esp things that fall on the floor- I try to avoid this as much as possible.
its easier on my back to have stuff in a tote to move around/off the floor.
It is definitely easier to clean each time around. when I was younger I used to deal w things one box or drawer at a time.. it seems w junk tossed in a container its easier to deal w that way. bigger houses, garages and basements makes us think we should keep more stuff.
sorted a few containers last/this week- a little recycling went, some stuff to the washer, some stuff to hand wash or put in the tool zone... most are keeps. there is ALWAYS something to get rid of or recycle ( ewaste, hazardous waste if applicable etc). things can get missed but I try to put donates, ewaste, recycling into certain spots.

During covid I was home and went through all the 24 bins of items that belonged to my sons from clothing to toys to school items. Let me tell you that they only wanted their first baby shoes and nothing else. Sadly in that bin lots of items smelled of musty odor. Im surprised you have not mentioned this because the rubber of containers stank everything up. I'm glad you are going through the bins a second time around. What I though was treasure for my kids they simple tossed it out. Imagine keeping those bins for 35 years and once I cleared it out not one bin was left. And truthfully I kept always stressing about organizing those bins for so many years and all that stress was lifted off my shoulders when my sons said mom we don't want these if we ever have kids we will purchase NEW ITEMS. Not everything is valuable and worth holding on to. What is important is peace of mind

You validated my feelings of when I am promoted to let go when I'm not quite ready. I’m trying to De-clutter my Bedroom. I LOVE my stuff so its difficult! Over 30 years of all sorts of beloved stuff. I have Charities collecting every 2-3 weeks, so things are leaving the premises. Also being thrown away.
I can’t believe the hoard of brand new stuff! I’m gradually seeing some light… but only I can see the improvement. Still a very long way to go. Very traumatic.
Good idea putting stuff together and then going through again. SO MUCH STUFF I had bought 2 and 3 times over because I couldn’t find it when I needed it. Phew!!

I know the feel, I'm in my 30s and my parents just brought me ALLLL the stuff I owned as a child and teen to sort through. Now I see how much I've actually accumulated over the years and for some reason it's hard to throw things away that somehow have good memories attached to them. Even if you didn't see or need those items in a couple of decades. Weird, isn't it?

We just did a major declutter. We had a dumpster and threw out so much stuff. I took two loads to donate. Two big bags of towels I’m donating to the animal hospital. We did “churn” a few things for later. I had tubs full of fabric with all the intentions of using it. Most was donated. Still a lot to do, but we have breathing room now. We took a lot of photos to remember some things, but have no regrets of letting it go.

I am so proud of you Ms Heart for clearing out another section of the basement. However, what I was most excited about and really please about for you, was that you acknowledged you intend to do a full Komari declutter of your all baby things one day. 🙌 I think if you allowed yourself to do that, it would be so freeing for you, especially if you allowed yourself to really let go and have that full emotional release. I am certain that when you get to that point everyone who has followed you from the beginning will be here cheering you on and supporting you in the comments and encouraging you to take that next step in your emotional growth and healing. 💛
Also, I was so please for you that the sewing machine found a new home with someone who will appreciate and look after it as much as you did. I can fully appreciate how much that will have eased your anxiety and helped encourage you moving forward.

Thanks again for explaining all the emotions and reminding us all that it’s ok to feel this when we go through our own stuff. You got rid of so much so quickly too, you are doing amazing 🤩 I’ve my friend coming for another hour this week to help me go through another section of the room I’m decluttering. I love the happy ending with the sewing machine 👏 Have a great week. Mary, Joes wife 🙇‍♀️👏💪👍🙏💐🐈

Homeless shelters often Welcome and need random craft stuff for kids' programs, (along with clothes, shoes, etc., of course). I know that you are plugged into many contribution centers.

I’m not a hoarder but when decluttering, I ask myself a few questions. If it were to blow up would I try to replace it the next day? If no, it’s gone. I also try to remember that if I were to pass, my child or family would have to go through all my belongings. I don’t want that pressure on them. I try to stay a minimalist! I hope this helps some with similar mindset!

In Ireland, there is a service where you can turn the shoes in iron. It's a kind of material they put in the shoes to coat them in iron and you can put it in display in the house.

When I was a kid, 65 years ago, I remember a pair of bookends made with my brother's baby shoes, preserved in bronze. 😊. It was amazing - you could see every little crease and scuff in the leather.

Wonderful that the family member came to get the antique sewing machine...see your instinct played a role in getting the machine back to its former family ! I use the Hefty stand up clear storage bags to sort my hoard of items. The Hefty Bags have a self seal at the top and handles. I can instantly see what I have in those storage bags which have handles too. Pepper the cat is emotional support and inspector at the same time. ❤

Honestly that first part can easily lead to a slippery slope of holding onto things until they can go to their "perfect forever home", while decluttering is often anything but perfect.

I'm not a hoarder but I have anxiety about letting go of sentimental items way more anxiety than the other methods seem to help with. I don't always feel relief when I declutter I can get frozen.
. Your emotional decluttering method helps me.
This video helped me to know you have those fears as you film yourself.

its ok to keep some sentimental items.. if there are things you had good memories of but might be ok w getting rid of, and the things you are going to keep too... take pics of them...at our old house I got rid of some things that were sentimental... it helped keeping the memory w a pic... and I do that for the keeps too. esp bc disasters happen.

Oh, the sewing machine story is beautiful. I have my mom's old sewing machine from college and it is turquoise as well. I still ask her for help with sewing but those old machines are unbeatable!

You will find your sons will want very little, more than likely, when they are older to keep anything you've saved for them. Maybe it's a good idea for them to go through their bins now and start the declutter. This way, you don't need to clutter up more space. Just an idea.

I think in the future you could rent a massive storage and restore the basement with lots of storage with closed doors for the boxes, plus hubby corner, plus kids play/videogame/homeschool/kids office, plus craft area for you to record your videos. Then slowly you could declutter the storage by subjects and bring it back to the house, and get professional labels for the boxes. You could pair with an architect who is a youtuber too. Then you could start helping people with their decluttering too.
