Due to the severe heat (>40°C), the austrian goal keeper had hyperthermia from early on in the match. Goal keepers weren not allowed to be subsituted back then. Afterwards he could not recall anything of the match. The austrian team masseur placed himself behind the goal to tell the goal keeper at least which direction to move. One of the swiss players collapsed in the end stages of the game. (and it was later found that he suffered from a brain tumor) The hard match and the heat took it's toll and so germany beat the austrians in the next round 6:1.
