- Tsuba craftsman always coat steel Tsuba with a layer of oxidized metal. That is not only for esthetic purposes, but it is able to prevent Tsuba from corrosion.

It's also really interesting that normal rust forms structures much larger than the structure of the iron and is therefore unstable, whereas the hematite and magnetite oxide forms are smaller and more stable. (which are the forms of oxide that protect the steel)
